(Where's the power?)
(The Best of the 2176 Series)
(O'Shea proves with her second book she's here to stay!)
(Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!) Of of this series, I've read the 3 middle books. Power of Two, Day of Fire,&Shadow Runners. I bought them w/o realizing that they were in a semi-5 book series. I did not buy the Susan Grant's book 1 or 5 because I don't normally like her books. It's not completely necessary to read the first book to understand the middle books. Only vague references are given to Banzai from the first book.
Out of the 3 books, I have read I enjoyed this book much more because there seemed to be much more emotion between the hero and the heroine than the other 2 books. The romance seemed more realistic because the characters had known each other in their minds for 5 years already.
The concept of Cai being able to tap into computers w/ her mind was interesting. I was a little surprised that w/ her being born a genious and all that she was not programming circles around the other anchor lady on the network, who was just described as an office drone.
Some questions were left open at the end of the book as where the villain escaped, the imprisonment of Banzai and her mate, why the villain's computer was semi-senitient and able to connect w/ Cai, and why the other anchors had all failed except Cai and the villains home made anchor.
Overall the book was good, I'm not sure if it's good enough to go on the Keeper Shelf to re-read, but it's worth reading as a stand alone. Where as the other books tended to lean more sci-fi. This book was a little bit more romantic inclined. Cai and Jake are members of a unique fighting team. They are mentally linked via nanocomputers and can communicate via thought. But Jake thinks that Cai is a computer, so he is none too pleased when she reveals herself to be a live woman, and a young one at that. However Cai has a reason for revealing her identity, she wants to go to the Raft Cities to search for her parents, and the upcoming operation to retrieve Banzai Maguire and the son of the UCE's military commander in chief is going to the Raft Cities. Having the hero and heroine communicate by thought is a nifty concept, and the novel does use it to good effect, but the story is short on the pulse pounding action. It gets off to an excellent start, with an operation going wrong and Cai handling herself quite well in a back alley brawl, but then it mellows out and just kind of sits there for next few hundred pages. I probably wouldn't have minded, but the setting echoes the somewhat more action heavy The Shadow Runners a bit, and the need to trust is likewise echoed in Day of Fire. The book does contain a villain that you will love to hate and enjoy seeing taken down a notch, or three. It isn't a bad book, it just didn't grip my attention like The Legend of Banzai Maguire and The Shadow Runners did. I was surprised, having never read Patti O'Shea before, but I had read all of the other books in this series. Out of all of them, this is my favorite. I enjoyed the mental connection between the main characters and I wanted to vote my 5 stars. I am going to take a closer look at her other books now. Five books in the 2176 series, four writers, and each bringing their own distinctive style! Patti 0'Shea absolutely blew me away with her debut novel Ravyn's Flight. I mean that book was so absolutely amazing! I have been waiting to see her next work. She did not disappoint me! Added to the task of trying to measure up to the knockout first book, she had to work within a "bible", a series of books set up where they have to stay within certain perimeters. So it was with anticipation - but a dram of trepidation - as I waited for this book. O'Shea delivers. Oh, does she deliver! All four ladies make this series from start to finish top drawer, quality rarely seen in "bible" set ups.
Cai Randolph is part of a Quandem Team. To say this gal is "plugged-in" to the computer is an understatement! She's been implanted with technology that lets her access and communicate with computers 24/7. She then relays this information to her "recep", a leader of a Special Ops team. Captain Jake Tucker is Cai's recap. He's in charge of leading an elite force and is used to getting information from Cai - but thinks she's like Hal in 2001 - a computer. Cai keeps the team up-to-date. Jake is used to Cai feeding them data, sending them where they need to go. But he has no idea Cai is a real woman.
Several years ago, Cai's parents disappeared and were presumed dead. Cai has persisted in the belief they were not killed but kidnapped. When she has the information she is looking for, where they might be, she sets up Jake and his team to move into the area, determined to go along with them. The operation is supposedly to track down and capture Bree Macguire and her lover Commander Armstrong, but Cai could care less. She is after her parents and sees the insertion of the team as her chance.
Jake has to adjust his mindset when he is confronted with the very much in the flesh Cai. At first, he refuses to believe her, but she proves to him by sharing the intimate knowledge she possesses about him through the mind link. Jake does not like the idea of Cai being human instead of machine nor does he like the idea of taking her on the mission, but Cai is determined. As they work together, their connection on serves to increase their attraction to each other.
O'Shea's characters leap off the pages, they sizzle. As with Ravyn's Flight, O'Shea delivers strong male and female leads, remembers the romance, yet delivers one spellbinding tale of adventure.
2004 Reviewers International Organization's Award of Excellence Finalist
This is the best out of all four of the published books set in 2176. Although none of them are slouches, I have loved every one and congradulate the authors on building a really believeable world. Five books and five couples to change a world.
Cai Randolph is a member of a Quandem team. She has implants that allow her to access most, if not all, of the computers in this time. She then sends the information to her recep who is the leader of a special ops team. All the other teams have failed and as far as she knows, she and Jake are the last. She is the anchor and sits in her special apartment where she processes data and probabilities and sends them to the field ops.
Captain Jake Tucker is her recep, he is the leader of an elite fighting force in the UCE. Jake thinks Cai is a computer, he doesn't know she is human. They have worked together for five years.
Cai has other priorities. Her parents disappeared 6 years ago. She has been told they are dead, but she is sure they have been kiddnapped. When she thinks she has found where they are, she sets up an operation in that area. She is also determined to go along on this one. The operation is supposed to catch Banzai Macguire and Commander Armstrong. Cai intends to retrieve her parents. She is sure they were taken by an evil multi-millionaire because of their work with nanotechs to increase life spans.
First things first she must confront Jake and reveal who she is. Then she must convince him to let her go on the mission. Unknown to all, there is another Quantum team out there. Not to mention the part of the world they have to insert into. Also she and Jake could have their brains fried if she overloads her implants. Even harder will be keeping her feelings for Jake hidden.
Jake is a man's man, but Cai is a strong woman. I liked these characters. They may get blocked but they always find a way around it.
The action is fast and furious and fits right into this 5 part series, I can't wait for the last installment. The UCE: In the 21st and 22nd Centuries, the United States changed and grew. Now the United Colonies of Earth dominate the globe. But a mysterious voice is broadcasting treason, inciting revolution and referring to the "ideals of 1776"—and to an enigmatic figure named Banzai Maguire. To find Banzai, the UCE assigns Cai Randolph. She’s the "anchor," the techie half of a Quandem: a pair of elite operatives used by Army Special Forces for just such covert action. Neural implants allow her to sit back in a control chair and feed information to her partner, the dark-souled Jacob Tucker. He’s as rigid as he is deadly…or handsome. But this time, it can’t be business as usual. This time, Cai needs Jake to trust her completely. Whether he likes it or not, she can’t sit back while he fights the bad guys. Wherever this mission takes her, Cai is gonna be the one kicking a little tail. Rerations < The Power Of Two (2176 Series, Book 4) >

(A truly great read)
(A LOVE BEYOND TIME)
(History with romance you can't beat)
(Well done on your debut book. I enjoyed every page.) Dr. Ryan Burke, an anthropologist from the Smithsonian, has accepted an assignment at the Little Big Horn Valley, to document the memories of the children of the survivors of the big battle there in 1876. Ryan is instantly enamored with the culture and history of the Native people, who still call this stark area their home. However, the dig that she is involved with is suspected of selling the archifact finds and she is recruited by an old Indian to help catch the thief. When coming back from doing laundry, the old truck she borrowed breaks down, causing her to walk back to the camp site. Once there, she spies supicious activity from the head of the dig's tent. However, her tent collapses from the storm and she takes up residence in a near by teepee. Every night, she is haunted by visions of a wolf man, who tempts her to come to him. One night, she gives in. When she wakes up, she is transported to 1876, days before the Battle of Little Big Horn. Dillon Wolf is a hot shot attorney, who battles his tribes troubles in Washington, DC. He is determined to shut down the project which he knows is stealing from his people. After a meeting with official, Dillon is involved in an accident, where he is left in an unexplained coma. Ryan and Wolf find each other in the past. From the first actual meeting of the two leads in the story, they are interested in each other. Ryan has difficulty, at time, understanding the reality of the way of life she has chosen to study. Wolf has difficulty understanding why he is drawn to a white woman. However, the author does a wonderful job in explaining both characters and progressing their story. Not once did I feel that love story was forced in any way. It seemed geniune, up until the end. A LOVE BEYOND TIME was an excellent adventure. It is obvious that the author put in valuable research time, that definitely pays off in the story. This book is definitely one of the best I've read of this genre. Even the ending, which can be difficult in a time travel, is without fault and completes the novel well. As a fellow author of a Native American novel, I am very picky when reading such a work by another author. I absolutely loved this book. Besides being well written, the story itself is absolutely absorbing. Having visited the site of the Battle of Little Big Horn, I found myself drawn completely back there by Ms. Aitken's on-the-mark descriptions and prose. Bonnie Napoli author of Shadows of the Eclipse Judie Aitken has done a superb job with A Love Beyond Time. She takes all of us along with Ryan to the Battle of the Little Horn and we all fall in love with Wolf. There is a wonderfully evocative sense of time and place in her work and her secondary characters like Charley and Buddy are interesting and fun. Often when reading this book I found myself with tears in my eyes and a sense of sorrow for a way of life that was soon to be lost. I particulary liked the way that she effortlessly moved us from the present to the past without gimmicks. This is a great story by a very promising writer. It gets my vote for Favorite Book of the Year. This is the first book i have read by Judie Aitken..what a story teller. It blends real history with today and throws in a lot of romance. Going thru some kind of time warp anthropologist Ryan Burke leaves 1999 and wakes up 1876 just days before the Battle of Little Big Horn. She is sent there for a reason. Someone is stealing artifacts from the grounds of Little Big Horn in 1999 so she's in the past to catch a thief. Enjoy this book.... I can only say that as a fellow author of time travel I know the hours of research it must have taken you to write such a spellbinding story. I knew little about the Little Big Horn until your story. Once I started reading, I could not stop. You have a true talent and I look forward to reading your next book. For those of you who are thinking about buying this book, I would say add it to your cart now! When anthropologist Ryan Burke joins a dig at the site of Little Big Horn, she realizes that not everyone is excited about the opportunity. Renowned Indian affairs lawyer Dillon Wolf wants to shut the project down. But when Ryan is given an old tribal tipi, she journeys to the past--where the tension between her and a Lakota warrior named Wolf erupts...into passion. (Have it all)
(Love all her books) I was very happy with the condition of the book. Not surprised because most times with amazon the books are in very good condition. This company tho does deliver what they say, nothing more nothing less. Constance O'Day Flannery had me hooked with Timeless Passion. She just totally enraptured me with the way she tells her story to make you think that you are right there. She adds bits of history, some romance, time travel and enough questions to keep you on the edge of your seat. She is absolutely my favorite author!!! If you want everything included in a book then this is the author for you. With Constance you get love, romance, time-travel, history and wonderful entertainment. I usually try to read a few chapters a night, but with Contance's books I usally can't stop until I'm done. She's simply the best!!! The only time writer in romance i will read.she tries to always incorporate previous characters in the current title.Prolific and very profound. From the author of "Timeless Passion, The Gift" and "Second Chances" comes the story of a woman from the present and a man from the past who discover that only the most passionate kind of love can transcend time. (Good, but has flaws.)
(Another Excellent Read From Shomi)
("Ninja's are cooler than pirates" -- especially time traveling ones)
(An action filled futuristic romance) Bought this book on a whim. Not my cup of tea and gave it to a teenage family member. She didn't like it either despite being a fan of teen vampire lit and a comic lover. Maybe it would have been better as a comic book/manga kind of thing. The premise of this book is very unique and interesting. A young woman finds a time twister and goes forward 100 years in the future where a race of vampire like aliens have taken over the world. The heroine, Abbey, happens to be a Time Guardian and the bad Vampire girl wants her to activate the time twister so she can use it to get more victims. The hero, Shane, is the local doctor treating the human survivors and happens to be a "Vampire" himself.
The first 26 to 30 pages are boring. I actually started another book before I picked this back up and finished it. Once Abbey goes forward in time, the story picks up but there are still flaws and parts I ended up speed reading through. One blaring oops was the plot twist that is used toward the end to have Abbey and the bad Vampire, Lucinda, talk. Several characters come down with bacterial meningitis and even though Shane says there is no more medicine left in the world, Abbey reminds him of the University medical campus. She goes and gets the medication...mindless of the fact that the medicine is at least 50+ years old! I work in the medical field, and I found this plot development very hard to accept, not to mention that the people recovered!
I would recommend buying this book used or rent from the library to see if you want to keep it in your personal library. Twist gives us paranormal, time travel, spec fic - all kinds of things rolled into one. All of them done well and I thought Hodge put a great twist (no pun intended) on the vampire story with this one. Great world building, great characters - just really well done!
The romance was realistic. I felt the push and pull, the hopelessness, the yearning - all well done. Nice action, good tension - a really entertaining read!
Twist is a futuristic time-travel alien-vampire romantic urban fantasy action adventure. Whew, is there a genre I missed? Well strange as the combination may sound, it actually worked. As a jack-of-all trades it isn't the best of any one of those genres but it was very original in the way it pulled together alot of familiar themes - the average every day heroine discovering hidden powers when thrown into an extraordinary situation, the beautiful tormented hero struggling to control the preditory demon he carries within him and the connection between soul mates when one of pair may no longer have a soul -- and the result was a enjoyable light romantic read. Oh and if you at all like cats, they play an important almost mystical role in the post-pandemic vampire infested world of the future.
In case you were wondering not only does the heroine prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that "ninja's are (indeed way) cooler than pirates", the quote is the reason that the hero keeps struggling to hold to a vow that is the keystone of his character and it is the password carried through time to ensure that the unbelievable is at least given consideration. Twist is Hodge's entry into the multi-author futuristic Shomi romance series, and now that my curiosity is peeked I may just have to check out a few of the others.
SHOMI Wired (Shomi) Moongazer (Shomi) Driven (SHOMI) Time Transit (SHOMI) Netherwood (SHOMI) Have you every wondered, are there aliens among us? If so, what if they've assimilated to the point that they no longer know who they are? Meet Abbey Shore.
In the aptly named action adventure TWIST, Abbey is an orphaned student of architecture who flips houses to earn tuition and studies karate as a hobby. As you can imagine this leaves little time for romance, even for the blond haired, blue eyed hunk she's ogled on the El every morning.
Fate seems to have something else in store for the two of them however. Heavy rain and a dead cell phone are responsible for Abbey having trekked all the way to her cancelled karate class. On the way home she takes refuge in Java Joe's and literally bumps into the hunky doctor on her way out. Later that night while tearing down an unsightly brick wall, hoping to reveal an impressive fireplace, the wall collapses tearing a gash in Abbey's arm. With no phone service, Abbey attempts to walk through the crime ridden streets of Chicago to Sacred Heart Hospital hoping that she can make it there before she bleeds to death or becomes the latest victim of a bizarre killing spree. Luck is with her. She makes it as far as the ambulance bay then collapses into the arms of Dr. Shane Maddox.
While she is being stitched up, Abbey learns that another homeless victim of the serial killer has been brought in. The condition of these victims has the doctors stumped as to the cause of death. It's as if they've been deflated. Shane notices a strange woman dressed in black leather lurking near Abbeys room. Abbey claims not to know her and is releases with the admonition to be careful on the streets and a date with Shane for the following evening after he admits to having felt the pull of attraction on the El as well.
Their date is not to be however, at least not in this century. Undaunted by her recent brush with death, Abbey continues work on the wall, intrigued by the whirring noise behind it that sends her dog Charlie into a tailspin. Behind the wall she finds a tank filled with what she believes is water. The noise is tracked to a hourglass shaped device that begins to spin. Investigating further Abbey accidentally breaks the tank dousing herself with what turns out to be peroxide and then her world turns upside down.
She next finds herself in her own city one hundred years in the future - an apocalyptic future following a pandemic that had wiped out most of the human population. And as she finds out from an accusatory Shane, those who remain are merely fodder for the Ticks and that their dire circumstances are all her fault! All because of a missed date?
How is it that Shane is still alive? And what has the mystery woman, Lucinda who they'd both seen in the hospital on that fateful night, have to do with all of this? Abbey soon learns the source of the vampire legends of old. Lucy is from a alien race know as the Chronolotians who maintain their immortality by sucking the life out of their mortal victims. When Abbey failed to turn up for their date, Shane has spied the woman in an alley and had stopped to ask her what she knew about her. Now a Tick himself Shane refused to betray his doctor's oath and was the only thing that stood between his own civilization and the aliens who fed on them. He is understandably bitter but the attraction between the pair hasn't dimmed in spite of everything he's been through. When Abbey joins the fight, everyone is stunned by her ability to fight as well as her ability to heal rapidly.
It's no coincidence that the Tick's have made Abbey's house their headquarters, the time gate that Abbey had opened had allowed Lucinda free access to the past where she could feed and turn others to keep the odds even. Now that Abbey had arrived the gate had closed to the Ticks. It appears that Abbey is a genetic Time Guardian whose destiny was to protect the time gate from the Chronolotians. The alien race had been responsible for the deaths of her parents and theirs before them. Abbey was the last of her race and had no daughter to pass the duty down to. Shane was her destiny as well, which is why he'd been turned. There would be no future Time Guardians unless......
All the aliens need is Abbey to ensure their domination. The human race needs her to travel back and change the past, but at what cost? She loves Shane more than life itself but Abbey has come to love these valiant refugees, the only true friends she'd ever had, as well. Would changing the past and saving Shane mean that they would never come to exist? Would it truly mean a better future?
Abbey is an amazing character never missing a beat for a moment. She braves a whole new world and a devastating destiny with integrity and fierce determination. Shane too has his demons to face. He knows he must periodically give in to his urges in order to stay alive and give his people a fighting chance. He stays true to his oath as much as is "humanly" possible but his nature eats at him. In spite of years of bitter feelings, his attraction to Abbey cannot be denied either. He loves her but knows in his heart that he can't have her, not as he is. It isn't fair to her. Yet he knows that she is now the only one who stands between them all and certain annihilation. Even knowing that he is compelled to love her, through some weird predestiny, doesn't change the fact that she is his soul mate. He is even willing to face his own death to send her home, knowing that she might not be in time to save him from his fate. But first they must battle the Ticks. Who will win?
TWIST is like a peanut butter cup, a perfect paranormal blend. Chockfull of action, aliens, time travel and a future Earth, this tale is to be savored - if you can manage not to finish it in one gulp! I for one couldn't put it down. I strongly recommend that you indulge yourself and pick up a copy.
If you enjoyed this SHOMI action adventure romance I strongly recommend that you also pick up DRIVEN by Eve Kenin. -- For PNR Reviews

(Take a trip back in time.)
(Avid Reader Lisa) This book was very enjoyable. The mixture of romance along with humor kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. Can't wait to see what this author releases next. Great characters that you could relate to. Ever felt like you just don't belong anywhere in your life? Not even in the same time zone? Well, like Tessa; you could be from another time and another place. Living in the 21st century with a cheating boyfriend and back stabbing best friend. Tessa Garrett has no family and no memories of them ever, just memories of drifting from foster home to foster home. Dreams continuously plague Tessa with a castle, a dark haired little boy and red haired girl playing tag in the courtyard; then the two lying on their backs arguing over the shape of a cloud. When she finds out the castle in her dreams is real, her best friend Libby buys the ticket for Tessa out of guilt because she slept with Scott. He was Tessa's boyfriend that could never seem to keep away from other women. Finally getting to tour the castle remains, rain threatens the sky and Tessa begins running toward the corner tower for protection. She falls on the way to the tower and discovers something very erie, the headstone of Theresa Brookshire. The little red haired girl from her dream was named Theresa Brookshire. Thunder wakens her from her shocked state; she begins running toward the tower again but falls once more. This time she blacks out and wakes up in a huge bed with a man looking exactly like Scott. Only his accent is that of many many years ago. And he is called Lord Eric of Hadley Castle. Tessa can only think that she is dreaming again. Until each time the two touch and the sparks fly; love quickly follows. Too bad he is betrothed to the evil witch Gretchen with no way out. As honor to his father he will not back down from this wedding. Once Gretchen sees that Lord Eric is smitten with Tessa, she begins trying everything to rid the castle of Tessa. The 13th century has awoken feelings inside of Tessa she never knew could possibly exist. The man, Scott from the future is nothing like this man Lord Eric that she has fallen madly in love with. It does not take long for Tessa to realize that the 13th century is where she has always belonged. I think T. Sue Versteeg wrote this book beautifully. The dialect of the 13th century was very well written. I could just fall in love with Lord Eric he is such a wonderful character and is very like what men should be back in those days. Eric's betrothed Gretchen was a selfish little witch who cared for nothing besides herself and the title of Lady of Hadley Castle. There are a few other amazing characters in this book but I will not give them away. And many more exciting, keep you on the edge of your seat events. You must read it for yourself. I really enjoyed reading this book. The unexpected twists kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next and the writing style of Ms. VerSteeg captivated me. I look forward to more releases from this witty author. Tessa Garrett has had less than an interesting life. Forgotten and abandoned as a child, her life consisted of foster homes and self-reliance. Her only escape from reality was her dreams; dreams of a castle she thought only existed in her mind until she woke up within its walls in the thirteenth century. Eric Bartholomew Hadley had found no time for love, unless it became necessary to lure the opposite sex into his bedchamber. As future lord of his castle, Eric will honor his father's last request and marry a shrew. Knowing the loveless union will provide his castle with a lady and hopefully an heir, he reluctantly agrees to the upcoming nuptials until he discovers Tessa in his courtyard. Can true love overcome all odds and bridge the gap of eight centuries? Rerations < Another Time Another Place >

(Too fluffy - didn't finish)
(really good!)
(GREAT START to a Series!!)
(So-So...) I have never been so appalled at misspellings, grammatical errors, and general lack of professionalism in style. I gave it 2 stars because it does have some entertainment value, but not much. These are stick figures, not characters. Don't waste your time or your dime. Also, an avid time traveller reader. I also could not buy into either of the main characters. Sorry - they would not be that accepting of bouncing to the past or beleiving in someone popping in from the future. I started reading - got 100 pages in and pretty much said - I don't have time for a romance novel. If you want a book with time travel and some romance - - try The Mirror by Marlys Millisher. My all time favorite book that I probably have read every year since it came out almost 30 years ago. I have just finished this book and then all of the others as of 2/07 by the same author. I very much enjoyed them all despite the fact that these are not the type of books I regularly read. I do read time travel books (love Jack Finney), but this was more of a romance novel, too. And, I'm not usually one for romance novels where one meets their undying forever love and has very hot erotic sex. But, for some reason, this book and her others were just completely entertaining.
These stories are more plot-driven than character driven. They aren't 'literary' by any means, yet the stories are a lot of fun.
These novels could definitely use some better editing. The author uses the word 'passed' incorrectly throughout the series, rather than the correct "past" (and considering they go to into the past, you will see this mistake quite a bit). There are numerous misspellings, too. In one of the books, there is the symbol (?sp) next to a difficult-to-spell name of a lake. Worst of all, there are many grammatical errors such as incorrect use of commas. All of these errors do detract a bit from the books and, after the first one or two books were published with so many mistakes, one has to wonder why the author didn't bother to get a new proofreader or editor. This book is a great read if you are looking for something light to breeze through!! I read my copy in 2 days and I have three kids, three dogs and one husband so it is not like I have a lot of extra time. The story is sweet and romantic. You do have to stretch your imagination a little bit and overlook a few things but don't you with all time travel books? I highly recommended this book!! I just started the second one and can't wait to read all the other books in this series!! Thank you Hollie Van Horne for a great story and a great time traveler series to keep my up late at night!! As an avid reader of time travel novels, I have read enough of them to know a quality book. While the main characters -- Chuyler and Trudy -- are lovable and endearing, I found the dialogue rather choppy and artifical. In addition, the suddenness at their falling in love from the beginning of the story threw me for a loop.
I found it odd how Trudy adapted so comfortably and quickly to the fact that she was 100 years in the past. Imagining myself experiencing such an unexpected turn of events, I don't think I would have handled the event so lightly. I also did not find Chuyler's quick acceptance of Trudy's time travel tale very believable. I think the author should have played out the time travel bit a while longer, to add to the possibility of it all.
Finally, I thought the kidnap scene toward the end of the book was a final, desperate attempt at making the story attention-grabbing. I couldn't wait to finish the book.
If you like fluffy time travel books, that covers storylines on the surface, this is the perfect book for you. Reflections of Toddsville ~ America's best selling historic romance writer, Trudy Johnson, has just one problem -- her love life! The only man she's taken to bed in the last 5 years is the photo of a Victorian man taken in 1891 that's on her bedside table. Her agent, Jennifer, thinks she needs a break after writing five books in five years. She pays for Trudy to take her summer vacation in a rustic cabin by a peaceful lake in Richfield Springs, just outside of Cooperstown, N.Y. On June 21, 1997, she falls asleep in her Richfield Spring's cabin only to awaken in the same bed one hundred years in the past -- and not alone! His name is Cuyler Carr, and he's not happy about his fishing trip, or his reputation, being ruined by her arrival. Looks like Trudy's love life is starting to pick up! (Back to the Future meets The Memphis Belle)
(the_fat_fairy)
(Time well spent!) Out of Time is the story of a twenty seven year old woman name Mel who works as a television extreme terror factor protagonist reporter. She gets to be with many people whom you and I couldn't and do extraordinary things that put her life in real danger every time. Between stunts she lives alone in her childhood home after her grandmother passed away. She loves the old place but it is as un-exciting as her personal life. Before her grandmother died she was doing an album of history about her husband who had died in the war against Hitler. And she feels she should finish it for all the war heroes involved with her grandfather. Mel's life changes drastically when she gets an envelope with old pictures form that era in which is a woman almost her twin displaying a temporary tattoo, a tattoo she got only days before. That same day at midnight she gets a phone call from the captain of the flying fortress, the Time Machine, her grandfather's war aircraft. The man who has never come to the survivors' get-togethers and no one knows why was in the other end of her phone. He asks to see her and she is excited because since the first time she saw his picture as a young child she has had a crush on him. He turns out to be in his eighties and handsome enough to make her heart skip a beat. This is a great history book for all those who enjoyed stories about the war, yet it would appeal to anyone who wants to read a great "back to the past" book. The romance is not heavy in it, but is enough to make you feel for the main character's plight. The ending is perfect. It is another great work of suspense, coupled with heavy artillery, a German camp and impossible romance.
[...] So many writers have problems with time travel, leaving large gaps and holes in the plot. Readers finish the stories saying, "But what about...?" These issues have been avoided in this case by not explaining in detail how the process works. And that leaves the reader with the joy of simply becoming immersed in an interesting and suspenseful story. The author has obviously done considerable research into WWII, particularly the daytime raids over the continent. But it's not just an immersion in history. Baird-Jones has populated the work with realistic and appealing characters. Of particular delight is the spunky twenty-first century heroine. (Hero really, using the current vernacular.) Mel is a TV reporter with a photographic memory whose show challenges her to participate in difficult adventures. And her sheer stubbornness has kept her from opting out--so far. The adventure into the past, however, leaves her wondering if perhaps this time she should have declined. The reason she didn't have that option is the possibility of saving her grandfather's life and meeting the hero of her childhood. No wonder this work won the 2007 EPPIE award for best mainstream fiction of 2007! And a very nice meeting it is too. Mel and Jack had me rooting for them in no time. My love of the WWII era was well fed in this one; I swear I heard Glenn Miller's band playing softly in the background. And if you have to sit through an air raid in the London Tube, Mel makes good company. A few dropped articles, and a copyeditor who doesn't know Goering from Goring, simply don't matter. The story and the characters simply shine. Well done, Pauline!
Sharon K. Garner, Sanctuary and River of Dreams OUT OF TIME holds particular poingnancy for me as my late dad was with in the Army Air Force in World War II. This wonderful book would get 5 STARS from me, hands down, had it not been for two glaring mistakes and a minor faux pas or two.
In 1942, the historical time period for this book, the U. S. Air Force, as Ms. Jones suggests, did not yet exist as a separate armed service. Originally the Army Air Corps, it became the U. S. Army Air Force (USAAF) in 1940. It was NOT separated from the U.S. Army until 1947.
Their uniforms, flight suits and coveralls, etc. in 1942 were NOT blue as Ms. Jones writes. Like the rest of the U. S. Army in 1942, the Army Air Force wore olive drab wool uniforms in the winter and lighter weight khaki for summer. The USAAF did not adopt blue uniforms until they became the U. S. Air Force in 1947.
The term "neat" as in something is "really neat," as Ms. Jones uses it, didn't come along until the early sixties. I believe it was originally surfing slang. In the forties, the word of the day was "swell."
The manufacturerer of the B-17 bombsight is spelled N-o-r-d-e-n, not N-o-r-d-a-n as Ms. Jones spells it. Ms. Jones also failed to clarify that the bombardier actually flies the plane through the bombsight, which controls the aircraft's autopilot, during a bomb run.
Ms. Jones wrote that Jack and Norm were good friends, often paling around together. As a pilot, Jack was an officer, while Norm the radioman was an enlisted man. For the most part, officers and enlisted men did not "fraternize" with each other. It was actually against regulations. Jack and Norm would not have gone together to a pub as Ms. Jones depicts.
There were a few smaller issues, like a B-17 pilot and co-pilot would not be talking to each other in the cockpit in a normal tone of voice during normal flight, much less during a bomb run. Not gonna happen. Too noisy. They had to shout at each other or use the interphone (intercom).
That said, don't let any of the errors I've mentioned keep you from reading this book. It also has a few typos, but not so many they ruin the read. This book is a definite keeper for any romance reader's bookshelf.
You can't help but like Mel and Jack, the heroine and hero. I found Mel especially refreshing. She is the kind of woman that another woman could trust at her back, even with a knife in her hand. She is not your typical delicate, whiney, self-centered female. She's the kind of woman men respect on the same level as they respect each other. Kudos for these character, Ms. Jones!! Mel is awesome!! And Jack is YUMMY!
The author's facts were also dead on regarding the 8th AAF station at Bassingbourne Airdrome and the "Ragged Irregulars" of the 91st Bomb Group stationed there. She even threw in one of my heroes, Capt. Robert K. Morgan, pilot of the famous Memphis Belle.
She describes an air raid in London that makes you feel as if you're right there, experiencing every moment of it. And the ending...well, grab yourself a box of kleenex ladies. It's one of the most poingnant and satisfying endings I've ever read. Plus, it sets up a sequel so perfectly I sincerely hope Ms. Jones writes it. I will definitely be on the lookout for this aughor's books in the future.
Mel is a fabulous character, and the story resonates for lots of reasons: the well realized setting, the emotions, the deft touch layering the plot. The action, the passion - this is a book that's got so much packed into it, the time travel aspect works beautifully, and there's a fresh realism to the book, and a classic romanticism. This is a great read! What happens when a twenty-first century woman on a mission to change the past meets a thoroughly 1040's man trying to stay alive in the hellish skies over war-torn Europe? Melanie "Mel" Morton is an adventure reporter, who lost her grandfather in World War II. With no family left, she's all about doing her job and finishing her grandfather's biography. Enter Jack Hamilton, sexy octogenarian, genius/scientist and former WWII bomber pilot. What he tells Mel sends her on her craziest adventure yet--straight into the past to save her grandfather's life--and change Jack's future, if she doesn't accidentally end it. All Mel has to do is outmaneuver the entire German army--and not fall in love with Jack. Unfortunately, eluding the German army is the easy part... Rerations < Out of Time >

(Wonderfull love story)
(A Wonderful Romance!!!) You know those kinds of books where you feel as if you become the charactes and you can feel their fear and pain and you fall in love with them. well this one was definitely one of those books i Fell Inlove with Iain he was such an amazing characted, and katherine was a great heroine their love for everyother was so strong it didnt let time sever it. One of my favorites that id read again. I have read all of Dee Davis' novels that are currently in print. I found this book at a used bookstore and was very excited about reading it. I read it in ONE night. This book went straight to my heart. There are a few books out there that I will never forget reading, and this is one of them.Iain and Katherine's love is heartwarming. I also liked how Ms. Davis had the secondary characters of Jeff and Elaine. I enjoyed Jeff and Kitty's relationship immensely. If you come across this book, do not pass it up or you will regret it. This is in my 'keeper' category!!!! What a wonderful debut for Dee Davis. Katherine and Ian's story is one that stays with you a long time. You care about these two. You want them to be together from the start. The characters are well defined, the plot is not filled with cliches. I really cared what happened to these two. It is obvious they are the love of each other's life. Even the secondary characters are so well defined as to add to the story itself, not just "pad" it. The fact that I love the British Isles for settings in my books helps, too! *smile* The romance, suspense, time travel, it all goes to make this one you shouldn't miss. Ms Davis is a new star on the horizon and I look forward to reading more of her books. I just love this story, it is so magical. Katherine St. Claire has never forgotten the night she was transported back in time to the love of her life, Iain Mackintosh. When she wakes she thinks it was a dream... I won't spoil it for you but I can promise you will love it as I do. If you can get it don't hesitate, buy it. I loved this book! What can I say? The characters were fabulous and the story-telling excellent. I read it right after it came out, and it still sticks with me. A terrific read. An earring, a murder, a legend...Katherine St. Claire has never forgotten the passionate night she shared with a stranger while staying at a castle hotel called Duncreag. He even haunts her dreams. Tired of loving "Fantasy Man", as her brother Jeff refers to him, she decides to go back to Duncreag in search, literally, of the man of her dreams. Iain Mackintosh wears the cairngorm earring of the only woman he will ever love. Eight long years ago she came to him in the night like a vision. News of his father's death brings Iain home to Duncreag where he finds himself questioning the circumstances surrounding his father's demise and wishing for the woman his cousin Ranald is convinced is a fairy. Iain and Katherine arrive at Duncreag each longing to find the other. There is however a seemingly insurmountable problem. A five hundred and thirty-year barrier separates them. What follows is the story of a love so powerful it crosses the boundaries of time. Complicated by murder and abduction in the fifteenth century their love will be tested even after they finally reunite. Only Jeff's twentieth century discovery of events from the past can save them. Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's review(Irreversible) (Not the author's best, but very enjoyable.) (Maverick's blend of cyberpunk, suspense and romance is an irreversible hook) (great romantic science fiction thriller) (A Bold Twist in Time!) Katherine "Kitty" Gibbs is having a wonderful week, living a wonderful life. Great job, great friends and a great fiancé. Too bad she's living this week over and over. Unfortunately, she has no idea what's going on. All the people in her life are actors and her days are scheduled with fake events, designed to keep her living the status quo, the better for the experiment she's the subject of.
But her real best friends know what is happening. Living in the present, missing Katherine who is stuck in the past, they are desperate to get her out and away from her fake fiancé, Leonardo Kayser. They attempt to get to her in the future, but their methods aren't working. So they call in an expert - Walter "Q" Sheffield, a time-anomaly specialist.
It's Q's job to get her out. The plan includes him developing a relationship with Kitty, something that scares him to death. But if they can get her to recognize him, they have a better chance of pulling her through to the present, where she belongs.
Irreversible is the sequel to the first Shomi book, WIRED. The beginning is a bit confusing, even for someone familiar with the concepts of string theory and quantum physics. Once you get past the first several pages covering Ms. Maverick's version of time travel, the story takes over and is much better. The gradual realization Kitty has of what is going on is interesting, if not entirely consistent. Q's attempts to understand his feelings for Kitty is sweet. The ending, however, gets mired in too many pages explaining... well, I am not sure I understand it. If you can get past the science, the story is a readable romance.
Niki Lee Reviewed for Joyfully ReviewedKatherine "Kitty" Gibbs knows she is a successful clothing designer, engaged to Leonardo "Leo" Kaysar, and blissfully happy. What Kitty does NOT know is that it is all a lie. Leo and his people are using her as a test subject. Kitty has lived this same week over-and-over. Her life's wires have been crossed and spliced before being assigned a whole different reality. The test is being conducted in the "future-present" and Leo had once murdered Kitty in the "past-present".
L. Roxanne "Roxy" Zaborovsky is Kitty's best friend. It has taken Roxy and her group quite a while to locate the where-when in which Kitty is trapped. The barriers of time are like a simple computer screen (or apartment wall) and they can be demolished. However, Leo has set up Kitty's time-space with tough firewalls. Roxy needs the help of a time-anomaly specialist to extract Kitty from Leo's reality.
Walter "Q" Sheffield is one of the best and just the man to free Kitty. But Leo is one of the best too. So Q cannot simply walk into Leo's reality, grab Kitty, and walk back out because even Kitty's body chemistry is firewalled. Q is determined to succeed in rescuing Kitty though. Q and Roxy believe that friends do not let friends marry guys in the future who murdered them in the past.
*** Even if you have read science fiction your entire life, as I have, you may still find yourself scratching your head and going back to reread sections over again in order to fully understand the whole time/life/different realities stuff. I suggest that when you begin reading you force yourself to slow way down so you can soak it all in. After the first five or six chapters, things will come together and you should be able to read the rest of the story at normal speed. Don't blame the author though, this plot concept is very hard to describe to readers. I believe the author did a great job trying to make sure readers understand exactly what is happening and why. This is a very enjoyable story to spend an afternoon with. ***
Reviewed by Detra Fitch of Huntress Reviews. In WIRED, L. Roxanne Zaborovsky, a reclusive freelance computer programmer and her lover, wire crosser Mason Merrick prevailed over the evil time anomaly specialist Leonardo Kaysar preventing him from recovering a critical code that Roxy had yet to write. In revenge, Leo had shot Roxy's roommate Kitty Gibbs in the heart right before her eyes. Kitty had died in Roxy's arms. But that was not the worst of it.
Kaysar had spliced a few wires and somewhere in the future Kitty was very much alive but not at all well, although she didn't know it. In Katherine Gibbs' new reality this was the happiest week of her life. She had the perfect job, the perfect friends and the perfect fiancé (Leo). The problem was that none of it was real, but a perpetual loop she relived over and over as each new week began.
Roxy, Mason, his partner Louise Sheffield and her intern from the future, Vesper having discovered Kitty's timeline, attempt to break through the wall that separates them to recover her. The problem is that the new Katherine doesn't know any of them and refuses to be rescued. A different approach is needed. Roxy and Mason cannot go to her as they have already been through too much and their timelines were too intertwined with Kitty's. They couldn't risk losing each other again. The job required someone with know how but to whom Kitty wasn't connected. Louise calls in her brother, Walter, a time anomaly specialist who goes by just "Q."
"Q" follows Kitty's scripted week carefully discerning when she has "free" moments that he can infiltrate. At first he insinuates himself into her time as a psychiatrist, and attempts to get her to think for herself, to resist those actions that went against her instincts, and to remember their visits as part of this Pavlovian experience. But it isn't long before his objectivity is compromised. He hates lying to her and even more he hates that with each new week she does not remember him. Based on a childhood of loss he and his sister had religiously eschewed relationships, now he was falling in love with a woman he was almost certainly doomed to lose. But even if he lost her forever he could not, would not leave this beautiful, intelligent, fiery woman to this zombie like existence, a mere puppet in the grand machinations of an evil genius like Kaysar.
Maverick paints quite a picture of this complex charade. Not only is Kitty reliving her life each week but there is a whole cast of Kaysar employed characters who relive the week with her from Monday's workday to Friday's engagement party. From "best friends" to chauffeurs these are the people who must keep her week on track. It's wild to see how some of them improvise to pull her back in line as her true personality begins to emerge and resist, while others struggle with the ethics of their assigned role. It's mind boggling to say the least.
What I really love is the fact that Kitty's true consciousness is in there fighting for supremacy all along. She is not merely the center of two men's tug of war and slowly begins to realize that her whole "happy" life is a sham. "Q" of course is the kind of hero we can't help but adore. Though his untried heart is almost sure to be broken, he is willing to risk it all, even his very life, to liberate the courageous woman he admires, respects and loves with everything he is. Of course the biggest obstacle is that the longer it takes him to extract Kitty the more likely Leo Kaysar is to notice that something is not quite right.
Though I'm not partial to one or the other, I thought it should be pointed out that unlike WIRED, IRREVERSIBLE is written in the third person point of view. Perhaps it is because the story is told from the hero's perspective, or perhaps to strike a balance between the cyberpunk futuristic aspect and the romantic one. I can't really say but it definitely gave this tale a different flavor from the first. Whether or not this makes a difference will be up to the individual reader. For me it's all about the story and what an incredible story this is! Unfortunately even though the file on Kitty is now closed, Vesper has gone missing as has Leo and the gang now realizes that their past, present and futures are all tied up with Kaysar's. A scary thought but I suspect they'll all turn up soon in yet another story. I sure hope so. Liz Marverick has this reader irreversibly hooked on her incredible blend of cyberpunk, suspense, time travel, and romance. ~Reviewed for PNR Reviews Katherine "Kitty" Gibbs is living the dream life as she is popular and engaged to a hunk who cherishes her above everything else. There is only one flaw to Kitty's perfect life; it is a WIRED lie created by her revenge attained genius maniac lover Leonardo Kaysar, who manipulates the time-place continuum changing her reality. In fact Kitty's best week ever is replayed week after week after week.
Her best friend L. Roxanne "Roxy" Zaborovsky recently escaped from that virtual world due to the help of her lover Mason Merrick. She feels guilty having left Kitty behind in a no escape virtual programming loop. Roxy hires time-anomaly specialist Walter "Q" Sheffield to rescue her roommate from the insane machinations of Leonardo. Q relishes the mission impossible until this relationship phobic realizes only love can free her and he is the one who loves her sol he can possibly reverse the IRREVERSIBLE.
As good if not better than the superb WIRED (Roxy's tale), IRREVERSIBLE is a great romantic science fiction thriller. The story line is a one sitting fast-paced tale with the irony of the heroine has no reason to be saved from her existence. Thus the hero who stinks in reality relationships realizes only love can give Kitty a reason to break out of her "heavenly" existence, but she believes she already is in love. Liz Maverick provides a strong romantic cyber sci fi novel.
Harriet Klausner The clever, determined and twisted Leonardo Kaysar has a plan to change history. When it comes to time manipulation, not only is he the best, but his current experiment will supersede all others. With Katherine Gibbs as his next fiancee and test subject, little else matters except keeping the integrity of the experimental time loop. Katherine Gibbs has everything she ever wanted: popularity, perfect friends, a great job, and a perfect fiance. She is living the best week of her life, not just once but over and over again. The only trouble is that her perfect week is not real and her best friend L. Roxanne Zaborovsky knows it. Roxanne is on the outside, separated by time and determined to do everything possible to break her friend out of her prison and out of the clutches of the infamous Leonardo Kaysar. As a time anomaly specialist, Walter Sheffield, known simply as Q, is the one man who might find a way through all the carefully laid snares and protections Leonardo has created. Can he rescue Katherine and at what cost? Can hearts survive all the wicked machinations Leonardo will utilize to insure the success of his experiment?
Liz Maverick's IRREVERSIBLE is a thrilling, dynamic romance for readers who desire something new, innovative and daring in their romance reads. Full of fast-paced action, exciting twists, and increasingly high stakes, IRREVERSIBLE gives a portrait of romance amid dangerous times when a mere nanosecond is enough to change reality. Liz Maverick creates an unusual daring heroine in Katherine. She lives the fantasy of the perfect ultra-modern life and yet, her life is the ultimate nightmare. Liz Maverick pinpoints exactly the emptiness inside that comes from living a staged life. The reader can't help but root for her and Q with each new revelation of their character. Both handsome and intelligent and a man of , Q can match kinks in the plan with innovations of his own. As he struggles to rescue Katherine beneath Leonardo's radar, the reader feels both his prowess and the depth of his heart. Q is a man who sees beyond his own ego in his battle, questioning the ethics of his actions. Q makes the perfect counterpart to a man like Leonardo. Unlike Leonardo, he sees Katherine as a person, not just an experimental subject. Liz Maverick brings together a hero and heroine in a riveting impossible dramatic situation. Katherine might be living the same week over in a time loop but once Q enters her world, nothing will ever be the same!
With a deviously dangerous villain in the midst of her intricately-constructed vision of time travel, Liz Maverick makes the heart race with suspense and a high stakes romance. In addition to the main romance, Liz Maverick paints a moving portrait of the friendship between Katherine and her best friend Roxanne, a courageous woman who will go to any length, including stepping outside her normal mode of operating, to rescue her friend. Liz Maverick's romance is a cutting edge, exciting read for today's modern reader, a reader who craves the bold and daring. The intricate, imaginative unveiling of the construct of time travel draws the reader into the fictional, futuristic world. With its fine detail, unique blend of romance, science fiction, and suspenseful action, IRREVERSIBLE bends the mind and heart, and indeed the romance genre itself, into new expansive territory. Liz Maverick is indeed a romance rebel, taking her characters and the reader to new heights and challenges. A fantastic futuristic action romance!Every day seems perfect to Kitty, but what she doesn-t know is that a villain has looped her reality-and only the Wire Crossers and the handsome time-anomaly specialist Q can save her.
