(enjoyable)
(Abosultely stunning!!)
(This book can be reread time and again)
(Just not worth it) Ghosts, Time Travel, Fairies, Magic and Scotland figure in this delightful story. I liked it. I had one little wish -- I got a bit confused with the love scenes - wish they were a little more detailed and longer. This is the first book I've read by Melanie Jackson and I found it to be a enjoyable book. It was a bit hard to follow in parts but the story line was interesting enough to keep me at it. I liked the fact that the heroine is a strong yet vulnerable woman who can stand on her own but also knows when to lean on her man. The hero is a very sensitive man who probably because of his heritage makes him irresitible to his heroine. This is a combo of a timeswept/fantasy romance. The heroine, Taffy starts off in the 1880's and ends up in the 1640's. She is helping her father with his archeology by taking photographs of the bones they have discovered of a piper. The piper was killed after warning of a trap. His hands had been cut off and he bled to death. While taking the shot she sees a ghost who happens to be the piper himself. The piper, Malcolm, is our hero. She is sent back in time to save him by the fairies. She and he both are of fairy blood and the fairies need them. Together they must overcome their human enemies and the fairy dangers which await them. I enjoyed the excitement in this book. You weren't sure what was going to happen next. I plan on reading more of thisd authors works in the future. I am one of the male managers of WISE Writers and Readers, and I generally leave the reviewing to Lady Ashorah, the head of WISE. But I wanted to say the male readers at WISE loved this book!!Melanie is a super writer, with a haunting, evocative quality that leads the reader into a drama drawn from real historical events. She is one of the strongest historical writers around. WISE WrIters and Readers Book of the Month for MAY and Book of the Year for 2001 Taffy and Malcolm are extremely beleivable charactors in a fantastic faerie filled plot. The plot is fey but the Taffy and Malcolm are 3-D humans. Part of what makes this book so believalbe is that it is based on real historical fact and the resulting ghost story that sprang up around a real life piper/hero. The real Malcolm knowingly gave his life for what he beleived in. Moreover, the death he suffered was not kind. This books just gets better the more often you read it. Ok, I read hundreds of books a year, and in that time frame, there are about 1 to 2 books I just can't finish. Night Visitor is my second one this year (and hopefully my last). There were so many typos and glaring grammatical mistakes (two things I usually read right over) that I just could not get into the story. I got about half way through it, and found that the characters were dull, flat and wholly unrealistic. I tried to suspend my belief because this is a fantasy (fairie story) but nothing I read made me want to continue on.A female photographer from the late 1800's, with a father who doesn't understand her and is patronizing coupled with a Scottish piper that has farie blood (oh yes, let us not forget the diluted fairie blood in our heroine as well!) sets our story. The piper is killed for warning his allies about a trap set. For this, his hands are cut off and he dies (supposedly bad luck for the killers since you are not supposed to kill a piper). His pipes haunt the castle for 200 years until our heroine touches his newly uncovered bones and makes a connection to him. This is the first few chapters and the most interesting part of the story. Our heroine then goes to the past to rescue our hero. Everything else seems to rush past, with little description or depth. I rarely do this, but I suggest you steer clear of Night Visitor, there are better stories out there. Rerations < Night Visitor (Timeswept) >

(A good read) 1999 and 1878 Wyoming
YESTERDAY AND FOREVER is warm and delightful time travel tale!
Very enjoyable!
Being a Native American holy place is the only reason the National Park Service has not been able to actually shut down the Medicine Wheel on the crest of Wyoming's Medicine Mountain. Still, people have mysteriously disappeared at the site even though only remnants remain of the centuries old structure. A few tourists, including Bailey Cooper, visit the site.A strange occurrence happens and soon Bailey finds herself wrapped in a thick fog. Zach Gooden locates an unconscious Bailey on his ranch. He takes her back to his home where she awakens with three little girls staring at her. Stunned to learn that she has traveled back over a century in time, Bailey begins to fall in love with her rescuer and his three sisters. While Zach struggles with an unknown assailant coveting his land, he too falls in love. Though Bailey wants to stay with Zach and the three hellions, she believes her time is in the future even if her heart remains in 1878. YESTERDAY AND FOREVER is a pleasant novel that uses Indian mysticism as a chronological device to add time travel elements to a warm western romance. The characters are fun, though Bailey adjusts to the amenities of nineteenth century ranch life too easily. The three sisters live up to their names of Hope, Faith, and Charity even as their jocular actions provide sparks to the tale. By Jove, Vickie Presley scribes a pleasurable, entertaining book that Americana fans will relish. Harriet Klausner Rerations < Yesterday and Forever (Time Passages Romance) >

(Lots of Fun)
(This book is a hoot!)
(really just two words....Ma Recklaw!!!)
(The Wizard of Oz meets Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) I loved this book! It was so much fun and Ma Recklaw was the real star. Bushwhacked Groom is a good one, too. This story starts with heroine Professor Jessica Garrett on a dude ranch with four other colleagues. While on a buggy ride Jessica gets stuck in the rear with a cameo pin, hits her head and wakes up in the past (1880) being robbed by an old west gang. When the gang doesn't get the money they are after, they kidnap Jessica hoping to ransom her.
Jessica soon finds out her gang of outlaws, the Recklaw Gang, are really 5 very handsome brothers who rob coaches and gold mines to feed their family. Mine owners practicing unsafe and illegal ways of mining have ruined their land for farming, so its either work in the dangerous mines or make a living as outlaws. Their mother has hopes that one day her boys will make an honest living and when she finds out they kidnapped a lady offers the best behaved son in marriage to Jessica. Jessica finds herself falling for sexy oldest brother Cole. Cole doesn't take place in the contest to win Jessica's hand but vows he will be the one to win her.
When Jessica and Ma Recklaw plot together to educate her sons and make them respectable citizens everything seems to come together and then fall apart. The four youngest brothers find young women, fall in love and earn the respect of the town. The sexual tension between Cole and Rebecca sizzles. When their identies are revealed its time to earn their mettle. They help the town take on the mine owners while trying to stay out of the noose.
One thing I like about this book is it never takes itself too seriously and is filled with humor. Ma Recklaw keeps the order in her family with a broom and it is obvious who runs the household. This story allows the women to be the stronger characters, while never making the men seem weak. Its a good lighthearted book, with some steamy love scenes but nothing over the top. Sometimes, its just a little too hokey, but not enough to ruin it. Jessica's past(in the future) just really isn't explained much and kind of leaves you wondering what kind of life she really had before the kidnapping. I enjoyed the Reklaw family and this will be the first of many Riley books I will read. Lord, did I bust a gut reading this book. Ma Recklaw was your typical redneck mama, complete with broom and hitting in the back of the head. I usually don't laugh out loud when I read a novel, but I did with this one just imagining what those five men looked like hiding in barrels and behind wagons and up trees to get away from their ma. Eugenia Riley is now on the top of my favorite authors list. This is the 2nd book of Eugenia Riley's I've read, the first being A Tempest in Time, and once again, I was not in the least bit disappointed. I am finding out that from reading the first 15 or so pages in a book, that if I manage to laugh outloud and proclaim "I know I'm going to LOVE this book!!!" to whomever will listen, then it will be a winner. And it was.
I loved everything about the book. One of my favorite things about the book was the secondary couple, in addition to the primary couple. I am talking about Billy&Dumpling. They were two very strongly willed people who overcame other peoples hurtful comments in regards to her weight, to truimph in happiness.
Ma was great -- but so were the Reklaw brothers -- the book wouldn't have been the same without her keeping them in line, whether it be by way of her broom, her rolling pin, or her way of convincing them to stay in line by way of threats she had every intention of carrying out, if they didn't behave.
Cole&Jessica, the primary couple, were wonderful! He (and his brothers) was/were stubborn&set in his/their ways, and she, coming from the future, knew what she wanted and of course, what she wanted was love, but also respect not just from Cole&his family, but also from the community of Mariposa. She wouldn't concede to marrying him unless he told her he loved her AND reformed his outlaw ways. Dumpling, by contrast, was also very strong willed, but did not need a declaration of love from Billy to know she wanted to marry him. (I don't think that declarations of love were so important in the past, I think that evidence of love through actions was much more important than the three little words).
I debated about whether or not to read this book and its sequel, The Bushwacked Groom, in order. I finally decided to read them in order, but I nearly didn't because I thought it might be fun to read them out of order, just to be different. Often, movies are made that way, where the prequel comes later. Maybe I'll read another duo of books out of order sometime, to see what I think.
I highly recommed this book for its time travel, for the western flavor, and for just the all-around fun of it! I'm going to start reading the sequel tomorrow.
One more thing -- Time Travel is to Eugenia Riley as Regency is to Julia Quinn. Think of Eugenia Riley as the Time Travel Queen!!! :) Rerations < Bushwhacked Bride (Wink&a Kiss, 2) >

(a haunting tale of love and redemption)
(very complex paranormal romance) Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques
Ms. Jackson has a winner with this novel. This is a thought-inducing story, which will make one wonder about the possibility of reincarnation.
Domitien had loved and lost, centuries ago, when his wife and unborn child were brutally slain. He was so heartbroken in that life that he vowed he would never again know love, no matter how many eternities or lives he experienced. What he doesn't realize is that after so many lives of refusing to acknowledge love, he was facing his last hope. If he did not let go of his ancient hatred and vow against love, his soul would be destroyed and he'd never have another chance.
The Creator has plans for Dom though, hoping that this time, in this life, he will finally create the perfect woman for Dom, with whom he could not help but fall in love. For He has taken all of the best characteristics of her past incarnations, those that most intrigued Dom, and combined them in to one woman, Laris, who he imagined even Dom couldn't resist. Laris was a great beauty, ethereally so, with red hair, luminous skin, and a voice even angels would long to have. But was that enough?
When first Laris and Dom meet, in her dreams, she is unable to resist his allure, and even Dom was drawn into the fantasies. When they meet in person for the first time, nothing could keep them apart. Until an ancient enemy enters their lives, the same enemy who has followed them through all their lives... Rychard. Rychard's goal is to destroy them both, as it has always been. The only way to escape for Laris and Dom is to cross through Death's door, literally, and then the real journey begins. They travel through many of Dom's past lives, The Creator's hope being that they will learn the lessons that have eluded them, and bring them together for all eternity. Will Dom learn once again to love? Or will Laris fail and the two of them be separated forever?
WOW! This book was absolutely incredible. Ms. Jackson has it all here - eternal love, ancient vows, truly evil enemies, adventures like one could never imagine. The reader will be drawn into the story from the very first page, the very first life Dom and Laris share, the one that sets the tone for all to follow. The emotion in this story is high, making one laugh, cry, and rage at Lady Fate, right alongside the main characters.
The passion between Laris and Dom is electrifying, as it had been from their first life together, and the emotion between them is incredibly powerful. They have a love unlike any other, even if Dom refuses to acknowledge it, swearing to not feel anything at all. One hopes and prays they will find the answers necessary to the end of their sad journey, bringing them together as they should be.
What's really interesting about this story is how Ms. Jackson weaves all the lives together seamlessly, through flashback type scenes at the beginning of each chapter. This is intriguing because it gives some glimpse of Dom (and Laris) and why they are in their present situation. There was one nice scene where the current life "bumped into" a past life and that added an extra dimension to the tale.
This is truly an emotionally packed story that will have the reader continuing just as fast as possible, to see what will happen next, and what depth of emotion will be reached in the different chapters. Ms. Jackson has written a story that packs quite a wallop for the reader, proving why she is becoming a force to be reckoned with in the romance genre. Way to go Ms. Jackson; if this reviewer was not already a lifelong fan, this book would have made her one.
© Kelley A. Hartsell, November 2003. All rights reserved. Warning up front, this book nearly goes so slow for the first 100 pages you might give up. It is very well written, but the first 100 pages just does not capture the reader. It is so distant, does not invoke your emotions or make you care about the characters. BUT>>>>after page 100 things take a sharp turn and suddenly the book propels you along, and into the past lives of Dom and Laris, as the memories rise to the surface and pushes them to fight for their love or to lose it for all eternity.Jackson is always a beautiful writer, but think the first part really hurt the book. But I recommend stick through and enjoying this very interesting, thought provoke work on the question of love, past lives and how much do you really love - can you put yourself second to that love....once it moves into high speed it is breathtaking. The 4 stars is because of the slow start. Last two-thirds of the book would rate 5. Still one of the more original works in the genre and recommended!! WISE Writers and Readers Book of the Month August 2002
Dominick loathed Rychard and God for taking away his beloved pregnant wife Isabella. He vowed that he would regain his love one day, but continued to fight for the Great One's priests in defending what remained of Charlemagne's once proud empire. Over several lives during the next millennium, Dom rejected the notion of a new love having never recovered from the loss of his beloved Isabella. He reputes any other love, as Dom only wants Isabella. Opera singer Laris Thiessen suffers disturbing dreams in which the repetitions which occurs every night makes her weary and wary. When she meets Dom, Laris realizes he is the co-star of what has taken on nightmarish proportions every time she sleeps. Now if he can only convince her to believe that they once shared a love of a shortened lifetime that deserves eternity by escaping into their pasts. Still, his enemy stalks them, but perhaps Dom will find the solace he has lacked for a thousand years. DOMINION is a very complex romance that uses reincarnation, time travel, and other religious celestial elements to provide readers with a deep tale. Because of the complexities of the plot, the novel starts off slow as Melanie Jackson needs time to introduce the various elements and key players to the audience. Give the story line a chance because once it shifts into gear it never slows down until the climax enabling the obsessed Dom to hook the audience as he battles with the Heavens for love. Usually ships in 24 hours Time Travel Romance. Ian Buchanan was separated from his fiancée, Brittany Cavanaugh, in the icy waters of the North Atlantic when the infamous ocean liner, Titanic, sank. Where she is, he has no idea, but the ancient Haitian amulet that transported the couple from the twentieth century has now chosen to drop him in the year 1692—at the time of the Salem Witch Hunts.Ian meets young, innocent Ariana; a woman who, despite the fact that she is only sixteen years old, stirs Ian's blood. Even more disturbing to the twentieth century man—she is a self-proclaimed witch, who wears the same amulet that he last saw around his beloved Brittany's neck. When the fanatical Puritans decide to hang Ian and Ariana as witches, too, the young woman screams a frantic plea to Aveena, the "mother of all high priestesses in Haiti." The couple is then transported through time again, to Fort Sumter at the beginning of the Civil War. The transport begins a tempestuous journey that spans ten years, leaving Ian to feel a sense of obligation to Ariana and her unborn child. Ian looks after them, supports them, and grows to care more than his conscience will allow. Finally, following a single night of unforgettable passion, Ariana admits her love. Ian though, admits to only an overwhelming lust that leaves him with a self-loathing he can no longer abide. Can Ian forget his committment to Brittany? Will he ever see her again? Will fate determine their destinies once again and join the two time-travelers in the end? Or will they be forever left to find their own way and alienate even those who love them most? (Pretty Good for a Time Travel....)
(Exciting,I stayed up all night reading unable to put it down) Tess held my attention from the first few pages. I read this quickly as I had to know what was going to happen! It incorporates so many of life's experiences weaving them into a plot that has twist and turns to keep your interest. Thanks, Tess. I shall read more! This book just kind of fell into my lap and I tell you it is one of the best books ever. Its starts off wonderful and ends fantastic. The charecters were so real. You fall in love with Jake and feel Torri's pain. I have never read a Tess M. book before, but I tell you, she is the best. God Bless all!!! I have never read a time travel before, but this was pretty good. It was all very interesting and had you wondering what would happen next. The ending was the only disapointment I had, you don't find out what happens to Christine and Harry, and if her granfather remembers her at all. But all in all it was a fun read, made me wish it was me doing the traveling! This was the first timeswept book I had ever read. It got me hooked. I did not realize that it was a catagory. I've been reading nothing but timeswept since. It was the best one out them all that I have ever read. This story was put together really well. Lots of history!!! The author did a great job! How can Victoria Hamilton believe that the heirloom necklace, a gift from her grandmother, will help her travel through time--until she finds herself in the sights of a handsome Rebel soldier. And even though Lt. Jake Cameron has saved Torri from death on the Civil War battlefield, can the clever beauty convince him that she isn't a spy sent to stop his mission? (Rich With Historical Flavor...)
(Entertaining Read)
(Steeped in historical detail - highly entertertaining read)
(A time travel book you can believe in) A grown man with a daughter must obey his father? I had a hard time believing a man who loved his daughter would give her a name like, Teal, too! Loveless arranged marriages, time travel...nothing new here "A HITCH IN TIME' by Christine Holden is a well-written romance novel rich with historical flavor. A story with a hero, a villian, and a damsel that needs to be saved from a marriage she would rather not have to enter into.'A Hitch In Time' takes center stage in the pre-civil era -- taking the reader back in time to New Orleans, the year 1853. An era long past when selfless acts of sacrifices were not only common place, but expected among men with strong family values and honor -- the drama begins after a young man (year 2000) finds an old pocket watch and after remembering a chant from his childhood he is swiftly sent back in time... The premise in this story is unusual...one that I found very appealing. Can Drew find the pocketwatch, convince Marianne to return to the future with him, and if so, can they get back in time to save the plantation from ruin??? Questions the reader quickly pick up on and instantly find themselves eager to find the answers to as the swiftly turn the pages to this 'Must Read' Time Travel Romantic Suspense. John Savoy Savoy International Motion Pictures Inc. To be perfectly honest, time travel romances are not my favorite romances to read. However, this book may have changed my mind. Normally, these books have a woman going back in time and meeting the man of her dreams. However, this book has the hero going back in time to 1853, where he finds the woman of his dreams. But this woman, Marianne is engaged to wed his great-great grandfather, Rafe Montague. Rafe has taken an intense hatred of our hero, Drew. From there, the story escalates into a mad rush for Drew to find the pocketwatch, convince Marianne to return to 2000 with him, and keep the family's sugar plantation, Bienvenu, from ruin. I loved this book and it definitely has a spot in my bookcase. New Orleans, 1853 Law student Andrew Montague is desperate for money to continue his studies and support his two-year old daughter, Teal, but his estranged and tyrannical father has cut off his funds. He wants Drew to quit law school and concentrate on the family business. Extremely unhappy, but realizing he has no other choice if he wishes to support Teal, Drew agrees to a deal with his father. If, after working at the plantation and learning the family business for one full year, Drew still wants to continue learning the law, his father will release funds to let him do so. However, things don't turn out quite as planned. On the way back from walking his daughter's nanny to the bus stop, Drew comes across an old pocket watch hanging from a hitching post. Upon remembering an old chant one of his nannies had sung to him as a child, he finds himself struggling with a strong and unexplained need to chant it again. The ticking of the watch grows louder and louder and everything starts spinning. When the world finally rights itself again, Drew realizes the ticking has been replaced by silence. However, that's not all that has been replaced...Despite the fact that she was younger than her sister, Marianne Beaufort has the weight of the world on her shoulders. She has promised herself into a loveless marriage in order to ensure that her mother and sister, Genevieve, can afford to maintain the lifestyle they led before her father died of the Fever. Marianne has accepted the marriage proposal of an affluent gentleman, Rafe Montague, who, aside from being the powerful and extremely wealthy owner of a prosperous plantation, is also known for his nasty temperament. On the night of her engagement to Rafe, Marianne is already late for the ball at the hotel when she almost trips over a man curled up outside the entrance. Concerned that he maybe hurt or that he's been robbed, she is drawn to him. The attraction between the two is instantaneous and strong. However, Rafe is not a man to stand by and watch his betrothed fall for another man - regardless that the man Mari is falling for is Rafe's great, great-grandson! Set in the years of pre-Civil War, A HITCH IN TIME carries the reader back to a New Orleans when sacrifices made in the name of family honor were the norm and where deaths due to the Yellow Fever were common. Christine Holden's latest time travel romance promises a few hours of pleasure to those who like to read stories rich in historical flavor. With wonderfully drawn and complex characters like Marianne, Drew and Rafe, I found myself swiftly turning the pages, eagerly anticipating what would happen next. Ms Holden has written an entertaining love story that glides along with enormous authority. The emotions and thoughts for each character were well depicted and I found myself thoroughly enmeshed in the tale. Rafe's character was very well written for he certainly came across as a true and very nasty villain! A HITCH IN TIME boasts a plot that is made more interesting because of Drew's knowledge of his family history. The dialogue was witty and natural to the characters, especially the French phrases that added charm and authenticity to the story. However, what appealed to me most was the way Ms Holden wove her extensive research into the story so that it didn't come across as a history lesson at all, but rather as an integral part of the story. Facts like the sights and smells of what New Orleans must have been like in 1853, were extremely well presented. For readers who enjoy time travel romances and stories steeped in historical details, A HITCH IN TIME is definitely a book worth reading. Elena Channing... In New Orleans, single father Andrew "Drew" Montague wants to continue his studies at Tulane Law School. However, his estranged father cuts him off with no money for school or to support his little toddler, Teal. His parents offer Drew a deal. If he works at the family plantation for one year, they will fund his schooling if he chooses to return. Because of Teal, Drew accepts. That night, Drew escorts Teal's nanny to the bus stop. On his way back home, Drew touches a watch on a hitching post. When he awakens, he finds himself in 1853 where he meets Marianne Beaufort, fiancée to Drew's great, great grandfather, Rafe. As Drew and Marianne fall in love, he must watch out for the jealous, dangerous Rafe. He also worries a great deal about his beloved Teal. A HITCH IN TIME is an entertaining time travel romance that will entice sub-genre fans to seek out other works by Christine Holden. The story line is fun especially Drew's various dilemmas and paradoxes. The cast, both contemporary and historical, adds depth to the characterizations of Marianne and Drew. This in turn allows the audience a better understanding of each of them. Readers will be beholden to the author if she writes more novels like A HITCH IN TIME.
