(Like the book BUT)

(Read her other ones first.....)

(...a remarkable journey through self-growth, learning, and compromise.)

(Extreme Disappointment)

(overall a good book)
I can understand why people disliked or even hated this book. This book is NOT and should NOT be lablled under the SBC Fighters series. Because I'm warning you now, it's not.

The only reason why I liked this book is the interaction by the two characters.

However, the one thing that bothered me was that not once did Michael step back and think to himself, "Do I really want to stay here in the future with a bunch of strangers, away from my friends and family - never to see them again?"
He pretty much accepted his situation and decided pretty much on the first day that he wanted a union with her. Pretty unbelieveable.
Oh and for the future, they were pretty behind with the times.

Lori Foster is one of my favorite authors. She cleverly combines romance, humor, intelligence and steamy love scenes that keep her books on my shelves so that they can be re-read over and over. The characters are finely drawn and wonderfully complete. All of her books are 'keepers'...except this one. It was at the 2nd hand bookstore before you can say, 'WTF?????'

If you are new to Lori Foster, please read her other titles before reading this one. You will fall in love with the characters and fully developed plots that the other titles offer.

While reading My Man Michael, I remember thinking...'man...her publisher must have called her midstream and insisted she add in some funky paranormal, vampire or sci-fi tweak to her next book'. The entire plot line felt as if it just dropped in from outer space #pun intended# and in no way jives with the previous books in this series. I'm all for authors growing their craft and trying new things, but this one felt contrived and just absurd. Had it been the start of a new series of similar themes I think it would have been better received.

We all have times at our jobs where we could have done much better with a project...that's how I feel about My Man Michael.

But of course, you know I'll buy anything else she writes becuase she's just THAT GOOD!

First off, let me just say that I typically hate (with a passion) books set in the future... I was skeptical, but knowing that I've enjoyed the other SBC books I thought "what the heck, I'll give it a try"...Now, with that being said - on with the review!

Michael Manchester, a.k.a.Mallet, is laid up in the hospital after an accident. His fighting career ended, he's desolate and unsure of what to do with his life.

Kayli shows up from a time in the future claiming she can heal Michael's wounds, for a price of course. If he goes back to the future with her and trains the warriors of her colony, she will make him whole again.

Not able to pass up the opportunity to have full use of his legs again, not to mention that he thinks Kayli is a total hottie, Michael agrees - thinking that she has to be joking and he'll wake up at any moment. Who's ever heard of traveling to the future? It's the stuff of dreams, movies, and books, but could never happen in real life. Right?

Finding himself in an unfamiliar land with technology beyond his wildest dreams, Michael faces the reality that he has indeed traveled to the future. Fighting to change the colony's rules and procedures, Michael ends up falling in love with Kayli.

This book is a remarkable journey through self-growth, learning, and compromise. The future may hold all sorts of wonders, but they still have their issues that need to be resolved. If you enjoy stepping out of reality, you'll love this story!

I am a HUGE fan of Lori Foster. I bought "My Man Michael" and finally got the chance to pick it up and start reading. I can't get into it! I have read books that I wasn't the fan of, but read till the end, giving it a chance. I can't even do that here! I can't get into the book what-so-ever. I am extremely disappointed that Foster decided to throw in Sci-Fi. I do like some Sci-Fi, but not in my romance novels! This one doesn't feel like a SBC book at all! If there hadn't been the Sci-Fi part, I'm sure I would be devouring the book instead. I would like to finish it, but I don't think I will be able to. Her website said she wanted to try something different and would be writing more SBC books. For all of our sakes, I hope she goes back to what the first 3 were like. As much as I love Lori's books, next time she decides to do something different like this, she doesn't do it in the middle of a series.
Overall I enjoyed this book. I had expected this book to really be a part of the series, with some of the same characters etc. In that sense, I was a bit disappointed. As a stand-alone this would have gotten an extra star, but as a part of a series, it falls a bit short. It's just too different from the others. It does not really fit, but it was well written and I enjoyed it.
Knocked out in one world, he’ll take on another.

On the verge of a title shot match, fighter Michael“Mallet” Manchester is injured in a car accident. And just as quickly as his career was taking off, it’s over. Then Kaylie Raine appears, offering him a second chance at becoming whole. Even though Mallet thinks it’s the pain medication talking, he accepts her challenge. And on an extraordinary journey with Kaylie, he’ll get a chance to fight again—to save the woman who has saved him.

(A LIGHT FUN READ)

(cheap romance novel trying to elevate itself by name dropping)

(A clever title that delivers a fun and frothy summer read)

(Amazing story that all would enjoy!)

(Interesting time-travel Regency)
A time travel fun ride with romance and mystery. The characters are a bit shallow but quite endearing. A great book for a lazy afternoon. ENJOY!!
This was a pretentious and cheap romance novel trying to elevate its stature by connecting itself very loosely to Jane Austen. Anyone who has seen any movie set in the Regency era could have written this story. There was no research or relevancy to Jane Austen herself. She would be embarrassed to have her name connected to such a story. While the overall plot was actually very clever, the heroine is only a crass immoral modern girl with none of the wit, elegance, or depth of a Jane Austen character. This is a huge disappointment to lovers of the elegant, chaste, romantic characters of Austen fame. The sex is graphic and lustful. The use of foul language throughout distracts from the story.
Heroine Eleanor Pottinger is a costume designer from Los Angeles who arrives in Hampshire, England for Regency Week jetlagged and downtrodden after being unceremoniously dumped by her boyfriend. She has booked her accommodations at Twixton Manor Inn, an eighteenth-century grand manor house converted into a hotel whose staff has lost her reservation and must put her up in the only room left available - the haunted one that they never use. Undaunted, Eleanor just wants sleep and does not care if she shares it with anyone, spectral or otherwise. When the two ghostly sisters Mina and Deirdre materialize to haunt her, she strikes a bargain with them to travel back to Regency times to thwart a deadly duel that kills their brother Teddy if they will in turn introduce her to their neighbor, her favorite author Jane Austen. Eleanor awakens in 1814 to meet the sisters and their family living at Twixton Manor with a house full of guests including hunky rake Lord Shermont, an agent for the crown who is secretly hunting for a Napoleonic spy among them. Eleanor quickly becomes his chief suspect. Motivated to meet Jane Austen, Eleanor engages in a week of social activities to discover which of the sister's honor will be compromised provoking Teddy into duel with Shermont. Somehow she must figure out how to alter history and avert the deed and save his life. As a twenty-first century woman, Eleanor struggles with the Regency lifestyle and often asks herself "what would Jane Austen do?" in the same situation which works beautifully until romance gets in the way as she is courted by Teddy and the known womanizer Lord Shermont. Questioning their motives may be the key to her unraveling the mystery and discovering if she has fallen in love with a spy or an Austen-esque hero.

Author Laurie Brown has pulled together elements of several genres - historical romance, spy thriller, time travel, and Jane Austen - in an ambitious endeavour. The plot moved very quickly and was evenly paced. Contrary to scandalous rumor, I do enjoy historical romance novels, which What Would Jane Austen Do? would qualify. I have two requirements in my romance reading that this novel satisfied; -- that the characters are believable and the plot has substance. I enjoyed traveling back in time with Eleanor, meeting Lord Shermont and of course encountering Jane Austen. Who wouldn't? Brown obviously researched her Regency history and has read Austen's novels quoting characters and scenes (though I must correct her reference to Knightley criticizing Emma Woodhouse after the picnic at Boxhill where she had treated Jane so badly! It was Miss Bates who was abused not Jane Fairfax.). Taken as a fun and frothy summer read, I have very few quibbles. However, when an author chooses to use Jane Austen or her characters that ups the ante in my book, and the standards are raised. Unfortunately, the opportunity to distinguish the present and the past with language nuances was missed as modern words such as Tarzan, yummy, omigod leaked in to the Regency world, and misnomers such as Arabian thoroughbred was used to describe Lord Shermont's horse. Additionally, at times I would like to have rested and discovered more about characters and their motivations, which was Austen's forte. In the end, I knew very little about the heroine and hero's inner thinking and felt the plot skipped past moments to elaborate and reflect just a bit more. The author did however supply the requisite Austen-esque heroine transformation and happily-ever-after ending, which Jane would have chosen to wrap-up more swiftly with far less effusion. In the end, was I entrapped by Jane Austen's name into reading this novel? You betcha! Do I have any regrets? Like Austen's character Emma Woodhouse, in this instance "I would much rather have been merry than wise."

Laurel Ann, Austenprose

Book description:

She goes back in time to save a man's life...
Eleanor travels to England for a Jane Austen festival and is swept back in time to the glittering Regency era to help a pair of ghostly sisters prevent a deathly duel...

But she may have the wrong villain...
Lord Shermont, renowned rake and womanizer, has a Napoleonic spy to capture and a dastadly crime to untangle. The last thing he needs is a scandal too...

Thankfully, Jane Austen's sage advise prevents a fatal mistake...
With Jane Austen's guidance, Eleanor untangles the international intrigue going on before her eyes. But, which of the dueling gentlemen is the spy and which is the man of her dreams?

This book really surprised me in how much I ended up loving this story. I am not a big "Regency" period reader, but I do enjoy Jane Austen and thought I would give it a try. The story is full of ghosts, mystery, time travel and history, which keeps you involved with the characters until the very end! I won't give away some of the twists, but the character of Eleanor was refreshing to read. She was educated and had a passion that woman wish and hope we have in how we lead our lives. Eleanor is put in to a situation where she has to figure out what she needs to do to fix the past for the ghost/real sisters, but fate seems to guide her in a direction she may not be ready to accept. "Jane Austen" comes in to the story when Eleanor has a situation where she doesn't know what to do. So, she thinks about the books Austen wrote to draw on an answer! A variety of secondary characters are filled by the 'handsome' gentleman, the snooty older ladies, and family members that will have you laughing and intrigued by their lives.

Have you ever thought about if you were able to go back to a time period that you enjoy and had a life there...would you return back to your own time? The writing style of the story gives such vivid details of the Regency time period and customs that you feel like your living there with Eleanor. Just when I thought I had the ending figured out, it turned out better! I would tell anyone that enjoys a good book to take a look at this one. The book is like a looking glass to a time period through the eyes of someone who treasures the history of our world's past.

Rating: 4.5/5 (Amazon doesn't give halves..but I do!)

What would Jane Austen do? Do I actually care? She's hardly a great prophet, leader or guru; she's an excellent novelist who died relatively young nearly two hundred years ago.

However the author Laurie Brown seems to think Jane Austen's guidance is worthwhile and the theme 'What would Jane Austen do' runs through the book. In this story our heroine, Eleanor Pottinger, a Jane Austen fan, finds herself thrust back in time by two ghosts to try to prevent a duel after a seduction. Eleanor looks like their cousin, a woman who had been living in America, and Eleanor of course knows a great deal about the Regency time - she's a Regency costume maker, for example - so manages to fit in fairly well.

She finds herself at a house party where the young women, eventually to become the two ghosts, look after Eleanor but show their youth in their rather carefree manners - Eleanor can see how one of them was seduced. She knows the seducer, too - Lord Shermont, a rather mysterious but very handsome man who is part of the house party. We also follow events from Shermont's point of view and the reader learns that he works for the government and is on the track of a Napoleonic spy who also has an accomplice - who might just be Eleanor.

Eleanor occasionally repeats the refrain "What would Jane Austen do?" when trying to overcome a problem in her situation; she gets the chance to meet the author in person, although this is a fairly minor part of the story; most of the action is Eleanor trying to keep the two young women out of mischief, coping with life in the Regency and being attracted to Shermont. I didn't feel that the Jane Austen aspect added anything to the book, in fact for me it was slightly obsequiously overdone, but that might be my British sensibilities showing through there.

The author has clearly researched much of the content of the book very well, specifially mealtimes, bathing and clothing, and there were some interesting vignettes into life at a country house gathering. However there were also some jarring elements, such as American words and phrasing issuing from the mouths of the English Regency characters and the feeling that the behaviour of several of the characters was rather more 21st century than 19th.

The book was well plotted and all the threads were tied up at the end. It was overall an enjoyable read but even when I had finished it and my eye caught the title again, "What would Jane Austen do?", I found myself saying "Who cares?"

Surely Jane Austen would know how to handle such a rake...

From the author of Hundreds of Years to Reform a Rake, a new time travel romance featuring a modern day career woman swept back in time to Regency England, where she thwarts a Napoleonic spy, chats with Jane Austen, and falls in love with a notorious rake.

Eleanor is a costume designer in England for the Jane Austen festival, where her room at the inn is haunted. In the middle of the night she encounters two ghost sisters whose brother was killed in a duel over 200 years ago. They persuade her to travel back in time with them to prevent the duel. Eleanor is swept into a country house party, presided over by the charming Lord Shermont, where she encounters and befriends Jane Austen. But there's much more to Lord Shermont than the ghosts knew, and as Eleanor dances and flirts with him, she begins to lose her heart.

PRAISE FOR LAURIE BROWN:

"Highly original. If you're in the market for a different kind of historical romance, or you enjoy stories filled with period detail, Hundreds of Years to Reform a Rake is a solid bet."
wordcandybooks.blogspot.com

"Brown's ending was clever and I never suspected Josie would choose the path she takes. I would recommend Hundreds of Years to Reform a Rake to anyone who enjoys paranormals, and even Regency fans who don't usually read them. Brown did an excellent job of combining the two genres."
aladysdiversions.blogspot.com

"A very enjoyable read with Josie a feisty and independent character, and Deverell the ghost and Deverell the man both also very appealing."

(Masters of Time)

(Why Dark Embrace is Not A Winner)

(B-, EXPLODING A Gnome...)

(good but)

(Dark Embrace Masters of time)
This is a wonderful series!I recomend it to anyone who enjoys these types of romance.
"Dark Embrace" is the third book in Joyce's Masters of Time series. I own every book Brenda Joyce has published, and I am a huge fan. But not all her books are home runs. When she has a winner, it is among the best of the best, but this book is not one of them. Why?

The writing is repetitive. Whenever Joyce gets stuck in a plotline she resorts to the characters haranguing themselves with past follies, or reasons they cannot "love" or be with someone. When she falls into that pit, her books become torturous and boring to read. One loses interest in the characters as a result. A good editor would have underscored this for Ms. Joyce and eliminated almost half the book. What law is there that says each book has to be almost 400 pages?

The character of the "hero", Aidan, is completely different from the character introduced in the other books. Readers fell in love with the other character, not this twisted, morbid compilation.

The plot itself is formulaic. In fact, all the series follows the same plot formula. That may be interesting in one book, but by the third one, it too is just tiresome and predictable. As one reviewer describes it, Ms. Joyce got lazy.

Unfortunately, Ms. Joyce is starting to remind me of Johanna Lindsay, one of the great romantic writers. But something happened to Ms. Lindsay, and her more recent books have fallen way short of her early works. Her fans are deeply upset about these changes. I do hope this is not Ms. Joyce's fate. She needs a better editor that cares about what she is writing, not just the publisher's financial bottom line.

wasn't in this book. Although, it would have been pretty funny and made me bump the grade of this book up to a "B". This book is better than most books I've read lately. I'm a sucker for the Highlander who time travels crap. This is a verra gud buhk, but naht ah grrrreaht one. The first time they think about doing the nasty is in a dream sequence. The skin-on-skin action doesn't happen until page 257. By the way, the book ends on page 370.

This book is a little disappointing, but it wasn't the worst one I've read.

Stick with Karen Marie Moning for excellent Highlander time travel books.

I enjoyed this book ..... but ..... i did struggle a little with the flow of the story and it may have been because i had to continually put it down so i suggest yes do read this book but try to read it without too many breaks. there was a lot going on without really getting there with me i felt a bit disconnected .... but still worth 4 stars
This book is a good read. I love the action and the characters are complexed and you really feel as though you can feel their emotions. I would definitely re-read this book.
However it is predictable and because I have read the other books in the series I basically know what will happen. I don't want to spoil the plot but I think a new villian should be created because Morray has been in all the books now and was meant to have died in the first two.
If you love scottish hunks and enjoy paranormal romances then you should read Dark Embrace.

Aidan, the Wolf of Awe, has abandoned the Brotherhood and forsaken his vows. Feared by all and trusted by none, he hunts alone, seeking vengeance against the evil that destroyed his son. He has not saved an Innocent in sixty-six years—until he hears Brianna Rose's scream of terror across centuries, and leaps to modern-day Manhattan to rescue her.…

Brie is a gifted empath who spends her time fighting evil from the safety of her laptop—and fantasizing about the medieval Highlander she met just once. Still, her life is pretty ordinary—until she awakens one night consumed with Aidan's pain and rage. When Aidan suddenly appears and takes her hostage, Brie cannot believe how dark and dangerous he has become. She knows she shouldbe afraid, but instead, she will fight across time for his redemption…and his love.

(Highland Outlaw)

(Nice 3rd book in series.)

(This love story is sweet and full of passion as well.)

(an engaging time travel romance)
Monica McCarty wrote a series of these highland books, they are written with an excellent knowledge of Scotland, so good I have the whole series, and if she writes another, I will be buying it. Not only are her books well written ,but if you like sizzling romances... These books are for you!The other to books are:
Highlander Untamed and Highlander unmasked!
Great reading

Again, a light enjoyable read. The time-travel thing is a little hinky for me, but once you get past that, it's enjoyable. You get to know the characters that will be in the NEXT book, and want to keep reading...another one coming in November.
Warrior of the Highlands by Veronica Wolff
Historical Romance January 6, 2009

Warrior of the Highlands by Veronica Wolff is the third in her Highland series. This is a story of a love that transcends time and so much more.

Haley Fitzpatrick is a student fascinated with weapons. When she comes across a gun that could possibly offer the opportunity to correct a historical inaccuracy, and become subject for her thesis, she is instantly obsessed.

The obsession with the weapon results in being transported to 17th-century Scotland and coming face-to-face with Alasdair MacColla. Despite their mutual distrust for each other, they slowly develop a bond that grows into love.

Unfortunately, Haley's awareness of history and what happens to Alasdair, forces her to make a decision: intercept to change history or allow it to go the course already knowing what the outcome will be?

Haley's character is well rounded and quite interesting. Incorporated into the story is her suffering a traumatic experienced that could have left her defeated. Instead, she overcomes the trauma and develops into a strong woman, both physically and mentally. Ultimately, it is her strength that carries the book and the outcome. It also makes for some tense, nail biting moments!

I really liked Haley and found her journey exciting. Veronica Wolff managed to balance her combined abilities without making her too good to be true. This love story is sweet and full of passion as well.

The story did started a bit slow, but after the initial interaction between Haley and Alasdair, it took off! The storyline took some unexpected twists and turns that surprised me.

Ms. Wolff has once again written a solid book with good character and a good story to match. Fans of her previous books will not be disappointed. I certainly wasn't and recommend it to anyone looking for a good story with memorable characters.

Harvard University graduate student Haley Fitzpatrick is doing her dissertation on early modern historical weapons although her faculty advisor loathes her topic as being insignificant in the modern world. When she comes across an odd sword circa 1675 and a painting of her with the long dead Highland brutal warrior Alasdair "MacColla" McDonald, she is shocked. She is unaware that a seventeenth century witch Finona doing the bidding of the Campbells has placed a curse on the sword to insure MacColla's bride comes to distract his mind from war.

Back in modern day Boston when she touches the weapon, Haley is propelled back in time to 1675. As MacColla rescues his sister from his enemy the Campbell clan, he captures a stunned Haley near their encampment. He assumes she is a spy while she knows he is a vicious cold killer. However, as they fall in love, he realizes she is no Campbell agent and she concludes he loathes having to shed one drop of blood even that of his foes. She also sadly knows he will soon die in battle.

WARRIORS OF THE HIGHLANDS is an engaging time travel romance starring a strong pairing as Haley learns first hand that to the victors goes the history books as her beloved is nothing liked the modern day depiction of him. Although she adapts too easily to being sent back over three centuries ago, fans will enjoy Veronica Wolff's fine tale as the author blends in real persona to anchor the time and place. Readers will enjoy the saga of twenty-first century Harvard meets seventeenth century Highlander.

(I loved all the Highlanders)

(Charming the Highlander)

(Not as good as the first book, but still enjoyable)

(Adventure, romance and naked men)

(Not unique)
I read each and every book from this series in order and nonstop. OMG...What an amazing experience Granted there were some characters that I loved thoughout the series. One of the things that most impressed me is we really get to see the happily ever after throughout the series.

If you have the money and can afford to buy the whole set, that is the experience that you are shooting for from this author. Chapman is creative funny, and sincere with these characters and you feel the love between main players as well as the family they have around them. After all those books I was still left wanting more.

I passed my set to my sister. She calls me at the end of each one to discuss the new characters, the new dynamic they'll create in future novels in the series.

Truly a fun read. The best read since my first historical romance (Knight in Shining Armor).

Complete escapeism at it's finest. Nothing like engaging in a little bit of romance and adventure to fill a rainy saturday afternoon. This was a fun read. Very entertaining.
In the second book in Janet Chapman's Highland Trilogy, we get to learn more about Morgan MacKeage, brother of Grey (hero of CHARMING THE HIGHLANDER).

It has now been six years since that fateful day when a wizard propelled Morgan and nine other Highlanders from 12th century Scotland to 21st century Maine. Although he and his kinsmen have learned to survive in this strange world, Morgan remains lonely much to the wizard's worry. One day when Morgan finds some ribbon marker around the MacKeage land, the wizard knew that evil surrounds the area; however, he also knew that those ribbons will lead Morgan to the woman who will finally give meaning to the lonely warrior's life. And what an exciting first meeting it would be for Morgan and the "ribbon lady"!

While surveying the valley, Sadie Quill stumbles upon a very naked Morgan. Fascinated, she ends up taking photos of him but it wasn't long before Morgan realizes what she was doing. Shocked at being found, she runs, but Morgan quickly catches up and Sadie thinks him a maniac. When he finally lets her go, Sadie runs faster than the speed of light, but only to realize shortly that the blind date that's been set up by her mother would be with "Mr Nude (but oh so sexy) Maniac" himself. And so the battle of wills begins...

LOVING THE HIGHLANDER is an enjoyable follow up to the first book. Morgan is an alpha-male just like his older brother and delightfully cheeky and irresistible. I loved how he unnerves Sadie and tries to rile her up. But what I liked the most was how he ultimately convinces her of her beauty despite her physical scars. Those provide some truly tender moments that are the best parts of the story.

Fun and entertaining, it was also enjoyable to read how the old wizard Daar plays his magic again to ensure that Morgan and Sadie will see that they belong together, just as he has done with the first book's main characters.

There is gold to be found in the mountains of Maine and Mercedes "Sadie" Quill is going to find it and fulfill her late father's dream. Hired by a consortium of local businessmen to map out the surrounding wilderness for a future nature park, Sadie is also determined to fulfill her father's quest and find a long rumored source of gold in the area. Physically scarred and emotionally wounded by the fire that had killed her younger sister and hastened her father's death, Sadie shies away from men and prefers the solitude of working in the mountains. That all changes one morning when Sadie inadvertently stumbles across a man swimming in a lake. A very naked and gorgeous man. What does a red-blooded young woman do when confronted by such a sight? She watches...and takes pictures.

Morgan MacKeage is a man who has traveled a long way. 800 years to be exact. Plucked by a wizard with an agenda out of the 12th century along with his brother and several other highlanders, Morgan has had to learn to survive and live in the modern age. When the wizard Daar warns him of evil forces in the area, Morgan believes it may have something to do with the ribbon markers he has been finding all over the valley. Resolved to protect and keep hidden the secrets of his valley, Morgan is determined to drive those responsible away. That all changes one morning when Morgan, out for a swim in the lake, realizes he is being watched. What does a red-blooded, naked young man to do when confronted with such a realization? He chases down the Peeping Thomas -- or Thomasina, in this case -- ties her up and kisses her. Yes, perhaps living in the 21st century isn't so bad after all.

Shaken, bewildered and more than a tad turned on by her encounter with the gorgeous, nude maniac, Sadie is fairly sure she'll never see him again. Going home to visit her mother, she's in for more shocks. There's a tall, naked stranger in the kitchen and her mother tells her she's pregnant. Humoring her mother, Sadie agrees to go on a double date with her mother's lover and his cousin only to find out that her date is none other than her own Naked Wild Man.

Thus begins a most diverting tale of the clash of the sexes. Sadie is a strong, independent heroine who hides a heart filled with guilt and sorrow. Morgan is your typical warrior male who has found himself in a more peaceful time. Seeking a new challenge, Morgan finds it in Sadie and their encounters are raucous, uninhibited and sexy. Those following the series will be delighted to see the meddling wizard Daar still at it, as well as catch up with the other time traveling highlanders.

TheSchemer

I have read all three books in this series, and they pretty much repeat them selves. A group of Scottish warriors from the 12th century get pulled forward in time by a wizard. They all meet (in the 3 books) 21st century woman and fall in love. The characters have no depth, the storyline just doesn't hold together. To many events are always happening together to try to make the story interesting, but they don't. They just seem haphazard, and all this action takes away from the characters. Instead of giving them a personality so the reader can understand their actions, Chapman throws them into strange adventures, and you don't understand why they act the way they do.
Not the best, just superficial. Try instead a Julie Garwood book, or any Christina Dodd.

When Sadie comes upon an unbelievably gorgeous man lying naked beside a lake, she can't resist taking his photo - and is quickly trapped in a passionate confrontation with the fierce stranger. Discovering his identity will complicate Sadie's search for a legendary gold mine. For he is Morgan MacKeage, a medieval highlander in modern-day Maine.

I loved this book and all the "Highlander" books!!Janet Chapman is excellent. Keeps me reading all her books.
I view time travel romances that involve Scottish men and have the word "Highlander" in the title through a pair of very expensive rose-colored glasses. I am inexplicably and unabashedly in love with the genre.

That being said, my criticisms of the fourth book in Chapman's Highlander Series would likely be harsher was it not for the aforementioned factors. Even so, minus one star because it's not even close to being the best in the series. And minus another star because it was while reading one of Father Daar's comments to Robbie MacBain in this installment that I finally realized what it was about this author's written interpretation of a Scottish burr that bothered me the most. Way to go, Father Daar, you've messed up again!

"Do ya think I asked to be a druidh? It's not exactly something ya wish for. Providence decides our destinies. Yar own mother understood this, and it didn't stop her from having you. It's not a curse, boy," Daar snapped, leaning forward. "It's a gift. Yar mama not only gave ya life but the gift of yar calling. Embrace it. Use it! Explore the full extent of yar abilities, and thank God that ya have the means to protect those ya love."

So is it just me or does this sound more like pirate slang than a Scottish brogue?!? Yar! YAR!!!! Shiver me timbers, YAR!!!!

Once that thought occurred to me, my desire to write off the entire book became even stronger, especially since I couldn't quite get into the pairing of Robbie MacBain (the hero) with Catherine, aka Cat, Daniels (the heroine). Cat was too much of a cliche and as a result, their wimpy romance was just sort of okay. Because Robbie had played a role in previous books in the series, I'd hoped his story would have had more oomph.

One final recommendation if you're considering a foray into Janet Chapman's world of hot bod Highlanders: read the series in order. You'll be confused if you don't.

1) Charming the Highlander
2) Loving the Highlander
3) Wedding the Highlander
4) Tempting the Highlander
5) Only with a Highlander
6) Secrets of the Highlander

This book was pretty good. I am getting a little tired of the series. This story had more freshness with the characters than previous books. It was nice to see a strong female character. I enjoyed the book.
This book was very intertaining and lived up to the great read the ones before it was.
She has the power to tempt him beyond all reason....

Catherine Daniels arrives in Pine Creek, Maine, at just the right time for Robbie MacBain. She is on the run from her ex-husband, and Robbie is a sexy, single foster parent who needs a housekeeper while he travels back in time to medieval Scotland. Unbeknownst to Catherine, Robbie's looking for a book of spells to save the future of his family...and little did he expect to find a burning passion in Catherine's arms. Can Robbie seal his family's fate while enticing Catherine to follow him and her own heart wherever love will take them?

I did not like this book at all. It was way too bizarre. I enjoyed "Charming The Highlander" very much. This book was awful, however.

There is so much mystical magic going on with all the characters, the story gets lost. The worrying and dismay over the dying tree was kind of pathetic.

I don't recommend this one at all.

This book made me so mad. i can't buy that the heroine was so swept away by passion that she let the "hero" treat her this way. This is the person whose hands the fate of the world rest in. Boy are we in trouble. I got about halfway through the book and then ended up throwing it across the room. don't waste your time.
I enjoyed this one so much I've had to buy the rest of them! :)
I like fantasy, sci-fi and of course time travel so this was just about right. I would probably read others by this author.
She must choose between her destiny...and her desire.

As soon as Pine Creek's new mystery man steps into her art gallery, Winter MacKeage is intrigued. This sexy stranger, Matt Gregor, wants her to do some drawings of his dream house. And with his tiger-gold eyes and masculine charm, he's impossible to resist. But so is Winter's Scottish heritage. As the seventh MacKeage daughter, she must embrace her true magical calling...and deny her mortal desires. Soon Winter is heating up -- in Matt's strong arms -- and her fiery heart is torn. Can she give up the destiny she was born to fulfill for the only man she's ever truly loved?

(Just Couldn't Like This Book)

(I Don't Understand All of the 5 Stars,This Book Sucks)

(Interesting take on time travel)

(I can't believe I'm saying this but skip the book and see the movie instead)

(Quite different from the movie)
I picked this paperback up since it was inexpensive and looked like a nice "by-the-pool" summer read. Also, I rather enjoyed the film (I'm not a rabid fan of it, though), and I know several people who tell me it is their all-time favorite movie. I am not averse to romance novels, time-travel stories, or combinations of the two. I actually like the idea of timeless love and can swallow the hokey quite easily at times. But I actually had to force myself to finish this rather short book. The style is overblown and forced, in my opinion, and I just couldn't muster up any belief in the tale at all. The gushy, mushy exclamations of love the characters profess for each other seemed laughable to me. In one scene, the hero watches his love perform in a play, and he dictates a stream-of-consciousness spiel about her loveliness that includes lines such as, "Her feet are bare!...How can the sight of her feet excite me?" and "A woman singing offstage. Is it her? She sings too? What a lovely voice! God, I love her so. I tremble waiting for her." And don't even get me started on the sex scene where the love-starved heroine "was, at long last, unlocking the door of that subterranean dungeon in which she had kept her nature imprisoned." This is the only Matheson book I've ever read, and I see from the majority of reviews that my dislike of this book places me in the minority view. I honestly have no problem with the premise of the book (man falls in love with a photograph from the past and time travels through sheer force of will) and actually find it pleasantly romantic, but the execution of the book was lacking to me. So if you like love stories, you may enjoy this book as many others obviously have, but if you're at all like me, you may find it verbose and cheesy.
I'm the type who always likes to finish a book. This book is definitely NOT a book you can't put down. I had to keep forcing myself to pick it back up. I am a Richard Matheson fan but I did not like this book at all. It's just weird and to me it almost seems like he shouldn't be writing a love story. I really don't understand all of the 5 stars. I think the 5 stars come from people who have seen the movie and maybe their opinion is tainted by that. I have never seen the movie but the book does seem like it would be a good movie. The story is just not deep enough for a book.
Not bad. The first twenty or so pages were really slow. They were hard for me to get through since they were erratic and seemed to jump all over the place. I think that was the point since that's what Richard Collier was feeling at the time. As the story progresses and Richard travels back through time to 1896, the story drastically improves. The writing style is much more effortless and easy to follow. We get to know Richard Collier and get to see him court Elise McKenna, the Great American Actress. Nice little love story. I could have done without the last chapter (written by Robert, Richard's brother). It made the story seem false somehow and I would've preferred to be left in the world of Richard and Elise rather than outside it in Robert's world.
Never in my wildest dreams would I ever think that instead of Hollywood screwing up a good book and getting it wrong that they could take a mediocre book and make something unforgettable. Originally published as Bid Time Return, the story starts in 1971 and written in a journal/diary format by Richard Collier, who suffers from a brain tumor. In an effort to escape his real life and career, Richard finds himself at San Diego's Hotel Del Coronado, while there he sees the 19C photo of actress Elise McKenna and finds himself immediately attracted to the image and falls in love.

Richard reads everything he can find on Elise, who after a strange and life-changing visit to the hotel in 1896 never married and he realizes that she died of a heart attack within hours after she saw a very young Richard and recognized him as her lover from the Coronado Hotel. OK..... Determined to escape the present and return to Elise, Richard finds clothing of the period and somehow meditates himself into the past and once there, well, you all know the rest of the story.

So how is it that a story I love to bits every time I see it (well possibly because it _is_ Christopher Reeve) be so slow paced and mediocre in the book? I love a good love story as well as the next female reader, but he was just too sappy and gushy over this woman who he'd only seen in a photograph -- and Elise wasn't much better with her mooning over Richard. The diary/journal format didn't help either especially with 100+ never ending pages of Richard's efforts to return to the past (came close to tossing it), and since I'm not into spoilers I won't go into the ambiguous little ending the author leaves the readers with, but you won't like it. From all the rave reviews, clearly I'm in the minority opinion on this one, but if you're dead set on reading it, get it from the library first - then buy it if you love it. 2/5 stars.

It was a bit disappointing, I would have liked more comparisons between the modern day life the man was used to and the past he was visiting. It also was a bit more sexually explicit than I expected, but not raunchy or anything.
LikeWhat Dreams May Come, which inspired the movie starring Robin Williams,Somewhere in Timeis the powerful story of a love that transcends time and space, written by one of the Grand Masters of modern fantasy.

Matheson's classic novel tells the moving, romantic story of a modern man whose love for a woman he has never met draws him back in time to a luxury hotel in San Diego in 1896, where he finds his soul mate in the form of a celebrated actress of the previous century.Somewhere in Timewon the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, and the 1979 movie version, starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, remains a cult classic.

(Great Read!)

(Romance at it's sweetest)

(Pleasant but not too challenging)

(Drool-Worthy read =))

(Boring)
Lynn Kurland is an amazing author. She proves once again in this book that she can really capture and keep the readers attention and interest. When I Fall In Love is a great book you are sure to enjoy!
To me there is wallpaper Medieval and Medieval-lite. Lynn Kurland is definitely in the lite category. Her Medieval and time travels may not show the daily grit of life in the past, but she manages to give us the flavor all wrapped up in a nice lighthearted bow. Her latest is not without its problems - a big one, actually - but as I sit here a few days after finishing, I realize how much I like the story. And that is what counts.

Jennifer McKinnon is a talented violinist on the verge of a brilliant musical career in New York City. After her apartment is broken into for a third time, she feels the need for a change and a chance to clear her head. An invitation from her sister in England is just what she needs, so off she goes to Artane Castle. Along the way she stumbles across a smaller, crumbling castle not far from Artane and experiences a sense of déjà vu. It's on another visit to this land that she stumbles across a time gate that spirits her back to the 1200s and right into the bad guy's hands.

Nicholas de Piaget is returning to his estate when he spots his family's foe torturing a red haired woman. He quickly rushes in and saves the day like the gallant knight he is. Nicholas takes Jennifer back to his home while she tries to figure out how to get back to her family.

The thing about Jennifer and Nicholas (as well as the rest of his family) is they are not strangers to time traveling. Jennifer actually did a bit along with her sister and brother-in law in a previous novel. Nicholas might not have traveled, but his sister Amanda is now married to a man from the 21st century. Nicholas and his younger brothers know exactly what Jennifer is when they find her wearing strange fashions and talking strangely. But they keep that to themselves for the time being and let the farce of Jennifer claiming to be a Scot who is lost in England play out.

Nicholas is never sure what to do about Jennifer. At first he ignores her out of self-preservation. He knows anytime he spends with her will make him more attached to the red-haired beauty. Because of his growing feelings, he cannot bring himself to help her return to her time. When she is determined to be off, he refuses her escort. When she is nearly killed because of such action, Nicholas gives in and makes a deal with her: They will "court" for two weeks. In those two weeks there will be no heavy conversation, such as Nicholas knowing how she can return home or Jennifer revealing she is from the future. It is Nicholas' goal to have her fall in love with him so she won't want to return.

Everything Lynn Kurland writes is extremely romantic and borderline sugary-sweet. When I'm in the mood, this is a very good thing. She did a nice job of setting up both characters with enough to keep them firmly grounded in their respective time periods so the reader never knows exactly where the HEA is going to happen. Nicholas and Jennifer are both wonderfully drawn characters. I also enjoyed Nicholas' three younger brothers who will no doubt find their own novels soon. It's clear that Ms. Kurland is not done with the de Piagets yet.

What I did have a hard time with is the length. Lynn Kurland tends to put out a long book. The ones I've read so far have not lagged overmuch. In this case, there is a definite need for a diet. One hundred pages might do. There are passages, and indeed whole scenes, that do not need to be included. One instance that really got me was Nicholas recollecting Jennifer's Medieval journey so far to his sister and brother-in-law. Since as a reader I just lived through it, I was ready for the usual "...and so he told them" and let's move on. But, no, we painfully sit through the same tale once again with nothing new popping into the equation. I was tempted to skim, but thought I might miss something. I didn't.

The author squeezes in almost every other character from the past installments in the series - or at least drop the name - but I wasn't bothered. I think it could easily be read by those who've not followed the series, but I think only those who have read the author before will enjoy it as I did. As for those who haven't yet read Lynn Kurland, I don't know that I would recommend it. Instead I would probably point those readers to If I Had You as it's more towards the beginning of the series and features some of the secondary characters in this new book.

Because of the issue of length versus a good, sweet romance between two wonderful characters, I had a difficult time deciding on whether to give the book a 3 or 4 star.In the end, I was happy I read When I Fall in Love, even if it took me a bit longer than I would have liked, and so it gets my very-much-qualified recommendation.

When I Fall in Love is a charming time travel romance set in 12th century England. Because the story is set in Kurland's web of trans-temporal love stories featuring the de Piagets and MacClouds, violinist Jennifer MacCloud MacKinnon is not incredulous when she seemingly falls in a hole and is saved from being burned as a witch by a literal knight in shining armor. Author Kurland delights in showing us the quirks of the picturebook knight, Nicholas de Piaget. Nicholas is renowned in the de Piaget family for being the most handsome, chivalrous, etc. knight ever, and his reputation has stood over eight hundred years. Jennifer is unselfconsciously beautiful and without guile. She and Nicholas are gut-punched by true love immediately upon meeting. There are two obstacles to their happily ever after: Jennifer misses her family back in the 21st century, along with modern conveniences, and Nicholas's rival Lord Ledenham, who hates the de Piagets and believes they consort with witches.

Kurland's books are only loosely interwoven. It's not necessary to read Kurland's books in any order, or to read more than one. I find them enjoyable escapist romantic fantasies. The time travel is to different periods in time, and to both England and Scotland, and even some where both partners are from the same time! Grab one for a trip or time on the beach, and enjoy!

Lynn Kurland is one of my favorite authors. She perfects time-travel romance. She always leads the reader into another century where danger lurks and love awaits. Jennifer McKinnon and Nicholas DePiaget have both given up on love. Jennifer seems at first truly pathetic, low- lifes are always breaking into her apartment and all she has is her beloved violin and her family, until she falls through a time gate to the 13th century practically in Nicholas' lap. He saves her from this crazed witch hunter. Kurland makes up truly memorable and fun-loving characters. Nicholas is perfection, the ultimate dream guy =) REALLY DROOL-WORTHY, and I like strong brawny highlanders myself so that says something. I don't know why Jennifer after seeing and being near him would so desperately want to return back to her own time. All she'd be going back to is her violin...no love. Personally I'd choose Nicolas over a musical instrument any day. You will laugh until your sides hurt and there are tears pouring down your cheeks because you are laughing so hard. Read this excellent book, fall in love with the characters as I have, and enjoy a great read! Please don't miss out on a spectacular story.
The book is filled with cheesy sentimentality and trivial dialogue. Jennifer cries in every chapter, but then says that she is not a "crier". Nicholas is portrayed as a perfect knight, a warrior, but he acts like a love struck fool. There is no plot development, no character development, even the villans are pretty pathetic.

It took a whole of 50 pages for the characters to meet for the first time. They fell in love almost on the spot but went around in circles, for the first half of the book, to tell each other how they feel. There is a lot of sexual and emotional tension, but no relief.

Nicholas's brothers are everywhere. Everyone is a meddling, annoying and inserts themselves into the relationship between Jennifer and Nicholas.

The villains have a promising start, but meet a pretty pathetic end. Ledenham has a master plan to kidnap Jennifer and present her to the king as a witch. Well, he kidnaps her, but only because she decides to be brave and follow him because he stole her violin. What a fool. Instead of the conflict being resolved in a grand finale of epic fights and overflow of tension, he just trips on the violin case, falls on a sword and dies. Brigit is not being publically humiliated or cast away for being a scheming vile "wench", instead it is explained in a tiny paragraph that she is kicked out from the castle by Nicholas.

I've never read any other Kurland's books, but looks like she puts too much effort into the romantic aspect of the story, which comes out greatly overdone. The characters repeat themselves too much in every chapter. I had to skip through paragraphs and pages until a point was finally made or to get to the next plot progression.

I do not recommend this author and will not read any more of her books.

Jennifer McKinnon is convinced there are no more knights in shining armor-at least not in Manhattan. Little does she know that a hero of legendary chivalry waits her...800 years in the past.

(Spare us the slander of historical figures)

(Another nice book in the series...)

(Ugh....I must have read a different book?)

(Sword of the Highlands)

(James Graham, a true man in history and a hero)
I have not read this book. Oh, please, please, someone tell me that the guy on the cover is not supposed to be Montrose. In fact, someone tell me that Montrose is not portrayed as a "womanizer" or as "rakish" in this book. Because, somehow, I missed that part in the biographies by Wishart, Napier, Buchan, Cowan, Hastings, Price, Wedgwood, Greville, Williams, and several others. He was a decent and an honorable man, and even his enemies the Covenanters, who had minds like cesspits, never accused him of personal immorality.

As for "the author's literary ruse , having him disappear into anonymity with his true love" - oh, yes, indeed, because a public hanging and quartering surrounded by enemies who hated him and who knew him well would make that *such* a very likely scenario. Montrose's death was a blazing example of heroic courage and integrity, and to diminish it for the sake of some idiotic plot is an insult.

Tell me also that she doesn't say that Montrose was a Highlander. He wasn't. He led the Highland clans through sheer force of personality, not because he was one of them.

As for the person who asked about the portrait: Not having read the description, I don't know which one she means. Try this: [...] for one painted near the end of his life. The one on the cover of Wedgwood's biography here: [...] is probably not Montrose at all, since the features don't match those on other portraits. (Edit: Hmmm, no URL's allowed, so try searching in a search engine for Montrose Honthorst for the former, and look up Wedgwood Montrose here in Amazon for the latter).

I suggest you try Margaret Irwin's THE PROUD SERVANT and THE BRIDE. You won't get any tawdry sex scenes, but you will get magnificently written, lifelike, and accurate portrayals of the people involved.

I might buy a (used) copy of this book, simply to complete my collection of all the books written about Montrose, and file it right next to the one that has him serving as some sort of lieutenant in Hell. They're about equally likely.

Fortunately, these characters can deal with "time-travel" better than I think I could (if possible). But, you get hooked on the characters and want to read the next book in the series ASAP. Enjoyable...
Okay, I just finish reading Hannah Howell's "Highland Captive," which by the way is 4 stars. So I was still in the mood for another Highland Romance. Not with this story. Where was the romance and passion? This is listed as a Historical Romance. I love history, don't get me wrong, but this book contain too much historical information, and not romance. I skimmed though the book wanting to find romance/passion. I am sorry to say this was a boring story. OMg....The Heroine was supposed to be this intelligent cultured person, but once she went back in time, her brain stop working. Maybe she had one or two moments, but she bored me! If you want to read a passion/romantic filled highland novel, I recommend anything written by Paula Quinn (Laird of the Mist), and Hannah Howell(Highland Bride).
This is not close to a novel by Diana Gabaldon. Veronica Wolff is not the sappy romance novelist either. I would say this book is Gabaldon lite. I did like it, I would have liked more content; but for those of us that wish for another D Gabaldon to come along we are still waiting.
Sword of the Highlands is a lot like Karen Marie Moning's highlander series. Veronica Wolff gives life and love to two characters, Magda Deacon and James Graham. It's a tremendous story about a true man in history. James Graham has led many battles in the War of the Three Kingdoms. Wolff provides great insight into this time period.

Magda is an heiress in New York City who works in the Metropolitan museum, restoring paintings. She is called into work for the weekend by her boss Walter to restore seventeenth century paintings for the upcoming exhibit. This is when she first sees the portrait of James Graham and curiosity sparks. She finds out from Walter that James had been captured, imprisoned, and hanged. Walter leaves her to do her job and Madga finds she is unable to concentrate on her work. That is when she is drawn to the portrait and sent back to the seventeenth century to land right in James Graham's lap.

James Graham, the first Marquis of Montrose is the sword of the highlands. He will go to all ends of the Earth to save Scotland and bring justice to his people. He doesn't know what to make of Magda, but he finds himself intrigued by her. Magda knows that she can't leave this time period or the man she is so drawn too.

War follows at their very heals everywhere they go. Magda and James meet memorable and loyal friends who fight along beside them against Campbell and the Covenanters. You can't help but fall in love with James as Magda has.

I truly would like to see the painting of James Graham that inspired this book. It'd be interesting to see if he's as handsome as Wolff described. This is a great read and the first I have read of Veronica Wolff. I promise you, you will not be disappointed.

One minute, she’s New York heiress and art curator Magda Deacon, enraptured by the Highlander captured in an old portrait. The next, she’s falling through time to 17th-century Scotland—and embarking on the most erotic journey of her life.
