(Didn't like it :()

(Perfect Dream)

(Funny and romantic)

(Memorable , Deveraux's best)

(Did not enjoy as much as I thought I would...)
This book was recommended to me by a bookstore employee who just raved about it, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Big mistake on my part (of money and my time).

First off, even though Douglass was supposedly a female name way back when, I can't stand books where the hero and heroine both have male sounding names.

Secondly, Douglass (the supposed heroine) was a complete doormat. I know there are real people like this in the world, but do you really want to make them the heroine in your book??

Like some other reviewers I also agree that I whole falling in love, him forgetting her and then falling back in love again thing was ridiculous. It would have made it much better if he had remembered her instead of insulting her and generally treating her like garbage when she appeared in his time.

I've also learned something about myself, too...while I really love time travel romances I detest time travel romances where they're reincarnated into someone else. I guess that's where the whole "soul mates" thing comes in, but it wasn't for me and I just didn't like it.

And lastly, I couldn't stand how the book ended. I was extremely angry that I wasted all that time reading this book hoping for the "usual" romance book ending that's expected and getting something altogether different.

The only positive thing I can say about this book: it seemed she did a lot of research into this time period (but maybe she already had the knowledge and just used it in this book...who knows).

If you've never read her work before, I wouldn't recommend this author or this book, but if you feel you want to then check it out at the library, borrow from someone or buy it second-hand. Do not pay full price like I did!

I read this novel after I read "Legend" and I fell in love with it. After reading Legend, I almost thought I'd be disappointed with Deveraux's next novel because Legend was so amazing. But I was far from it. " A knight in Shining Armor" keeps you on your toes, you do not want to put the book down. You fall in love with th characters and you root for good things to happen to them. You absolutely learn to hate Robert with all your being.
Thats good writing in my book, if you can feel like you know the characters. I also like how Deveraux has this way of tying all the characters and plot together. You are brillant Jude Deveraux and a major inspiration to me.

I laughed the whole way through this book. I wish it were made into a movie. But then again, the movie world would destroy it. A must read, you wont regret it. Thank you Jude Deveraux!
This is the first romance novel I've read that involved time travel and other impossible things.

I read this when i was 13...16 years ago. I still remember the scenes (like Dougless performing Broadway tunes for the Lady/Earl's mother) and showering in the fountain... or Nicholas traipsing around the english countryside in his armor. I must have read it more than 10 times. Its truly riveting!

Some people were harsh in judging this book... i like to think that Deveraux is a realist with her characterizations, plots and devices, and in the end, a big sappy romantic. She even believes in souls meeting forward, backwards and reincarnation.

The best part is, she made me believe it too! :) LOVE CONQUERS ALL!!!!!!

If you can only read 5 romance novels in your life, this has GOT TO BE one of them.

I try to stick with a book unless it's absolutely horrendous so I stuck with this one, and at the end I was sorry I did.
I couldn't identify with Dougless, the heroine because she, first of all, stuck with her bad boyfriend so long, then second, she even *thought* of going back to him! Lastly, I was SO disappointed at the ending. Everyone said this was her best book? I probably won't read the others then!

(Another Brilliant Book by Sandra Hill)

(A Touchingly Funny Time Travel Romance)

(Meh.)

(A Must Read!!)

(Fantasy meets the real world)
It was fabulous. Couldn't put it down, but then again that's how most of her books are.
Lydia Denton is madly in love with her husband Dave a Navy SEAL based in Coranodo, California. Each mission has taken its toll on both of them. It shows in the deep groves in Dave's face. Killing, no matter how justified, did that to a man. Lydia lives in fear that each mission might be the one to take him away from her forever. She greets him with passion when he arrives home on leave, and once again brings up her desire for a child. Dave however, knows of the danger of terrorist retaliation that might result from any one of his missions and does not want to be responsible for putting their child in the line of fire. Unfortunately Dave's next mission is his last. He'd been among the victims of an explosion. Still as Lydia soon discovers, a part of him lives on, despite all odds she finds herself pregnant after all.

Bagdad, four years later (more or less)......

Medieval Viking Thorfinn Haraldsson's faithless wife Luta had abandoned him four years ago taking his infant son Miklof with her and her lover. Though their ship had capsized and they were all presumed drowned, Thorfinn had not given up hope that his son had somehow survived. There had been recent reports of a woman and child that resembled his family in the Arab lands and he had no choice but to investigate. Each lead had turned out to be false and Thorfinn had finally accepted the heartbreaking truth and decided to return home to the Norselands. Unfortunately before he is able to return to his boat he is accosted by six irate Arabs, brothers of the man whose wife Finn had examined to determine whether or not she was Luta. Arab men apparently took exception to having their wives faces being looked upon by other men. Though Finn is a warrior through and through there is no way he could dispatch so many.

Navy Seals on a mission to take out a group of tangos happen on Thorfinn in the midst of battling who they believe are their marks with .... a broadsword! Finn is sadly out numbered and the men covertly begin to move in on all sides to aid him.
With the enemy dispatched, the men need to make a quick escape taking Thorfinn with them. Only their mode of transportation gives him pause. No way is he boarding that large bird. The next thing he knows he is in the belly of the beast (a helicopter) winging his way to where God only knows.

Fortunately his cousin Torolf Magnusson is among the 21st century Seals who affected his rescue. While he tries to get his cousin acclimated to a new place in time, Finn drives his female relatives crazy with his uncouth behavior. Finn decides he is not fit for anything besides battle and Torolf, known as Max among the Seals enlists their help to prepare his cousin for the rigorous training and tests. He also introduces him to the Wet and Wild, a bar where Seals and Weals let of steam and the singles hooked up with each other.

Finn isn't averse to "hooking up" painful as it sounded, as long as nothing permanent was expected. He was certain that God had a plan in bringing him to this place. Mayhap his son had time traveled as well. This doesn't seem so far fetched when Lydia Denton enters the bar along with several of his female relations. There's something familiar about her. Her coloring is wrong and Luta never had such large breasts but still the resemblance was uncanny. Was this why she was staring at him?

Finn has a similar build and the exact same unusual gray eyes that both David and her son Michael had. All these years Lydia had never stopped hoping that a mistake had been made, that her husband was merely a prisoner and not dead. Was it really him? The hair was all wrong but it had been five years. Not waiting to ask questions she throws herself into Thorfinn's arms and kisses him madly.

Next thing anyone knows she's taken him home and what happens next is inevitable. But when Finn discovers that Lydia has a four year old son named Michael who is currently visiting his grandparents in Minnesota he wants to see pictures. Oh my, the boy has his unique gray eyes and the same dark hair as his beloved Miklof. He insists he must see the boy and determine for himself whether the child is his long lost son, and he isn't going to take no for an answer.

It isn't long before Lydia is head over heels in love with Finn for his own self, but when she discovers that he's planning to sign up for Seals it's a deal breaker. Never would she put herself in that situation ever again Loving and losing that way had simply been too painful. But she hadn't realized how painful life without Finn would be.

A misunderstanding keeps him away but he insists he will still accompany her to Minnesota to see "his" son. Meanwhile an Iraqi national who had lost his own spouse and child as collateral damage in the explosion that had also killed Dave, blames the Seal for their deaths and formulates an eye for an eye revenge. When Finn realizes the two people he cares most for are in danger, he accompanied by all his male relatives and most of Dave's teammates rush to the rescue. The FBI is loving that.... NOT!

Still the biggest problem between Lydia and Finn is the fact that the fool is completely out of touch with his feelings. His marriage had been arranged, he and his wife had never suited, and he had no idea what love was supposed to feel like. He knew he cared deeply for Lydia, but he also knew he didn't feel for her what he felt for his son. What was love anyway? Would a brush with dead finally bring his feelings to light or would it take something more drastic?

Did I mention that Lydia runs a dance studio and gets the wild idea to offer pole dancing as a class for women who want to turn on their men? Naturally the class is filled by Finn's female relations and none of them understand what she sees in their loutish cousin either. That doesn't mean they won't help her bring the fool to heel however.

This story brought to mind the first of Ms. Hill's historical Viking time travels, THE RELUCTANT VIKING but with a different twist. This story abounded with humor, but does not let us forget that there are still young heroes risking their lives for us every day in wars not of their making, and that here at home loved ones wait hoping to never hear that knock on that door that shattered Lydia Denton's world. Laughter and tears, love and family, and courage of both the heroic and romantic nature are the hallmarks of this tale. For a touching and funny time travel romance featuring those mad but lovable Vikings and equally unique military men you must read UNCHAINED VIKING. Is anyone besides me hoping Stephen Haraldsson will find a way to join his brother, after all who would enjoy that "tingling" ointment better than him? ~ Reviewed for PNR Reviews

My goal was to find a book for a plane ride. I read about 3/4 of the book during the flight (LONG flight), then never felt compelled to pick it up again once my trip was over. I finally finished it during ANOTHER plane ride a month or two later. Really, I wouldn't have felt a loss if I had never finished it at all.

Don't get me wrong, I love the whole time-traveling Viking Navy SEAL premise. Heck, I could even relate to the whole Coronado/San Diego locale. That's why I bought the book. It was pretty funny, but at times I wasn't sure if I was laughing with the characters or at them. It really bothers me that a lot of the plot holes weren't filled in. Maybe once or twice my heart-strings were actually pulled at, but man...this book was a little ridiculous.

This book is awesome. I am so in love with men who really, really love their children! Love them enough to go through time to find them.

This book is s touching, you'd have to be dead not to feel the anguish from the hero and the heroine. It's at least a 3 tissue book.

Sandra Hills name should be synonymous with wild, beleivable story telling. Her Vikings are not only gorgeous and smart beyond their time but so much fun to see get into the trouble they bring on themselves. At times you want to slap them up the side of their head if you could reach that far, although there are more pleasant things to do if you get that close. These books are the best to take to the beach on a lazy summer afternoon, but not if you are watching small children, as you might tend to forget where you are.
Sandra Hill unleashes her best novel yet.

Searching for his little boy, 11thcentury Viking Thorfinn lands in modern times, where he stumbles upon a dead wringer for his cheating ex-wife. Single mom Lydia Denton mourns the loss of her SEAL husband. Then she meets a man who resembles him. Despite Thorfinn’s strange accusations, Lydia finds it impossible to ignore the chemistry between them. And as she gets to know this handsome Viking, she can’t help but wonder whether two souls, separated by time, have found their way back together.

(Part Fantasy, Part Romance, All Matheson)

(overrated)

(The ultimate love story)

(The love story of all time)

(Wonderful Time-Travel Story)
Part fantasy novel, part romance novel, Richard Matheson's "Bid Time Return" finds dying writer Richard Collier falling in love with a photograph of a turn of the century actress Elise McKenna, becoming obsessed with her and then finding a way to travel back in time to meet her.

On the surface, the premise sounds absurd, but really no more so than your standard romance novel. It's the story of two people falling in love and overcoming obstancles to be together. In this case, it's the gulf of time standing between them. At least that's the case at first.

Once you accept the premise that Collier can and does find a way to move back in time to meet McKenna (he's staying at the same hotel she is, so he doesn't move in space, only time), the rest of the story falls well into place. Matheson's narration of the Collier via first-person, starting off in short, punctuated bursts from Collier's audio diary and later becoming longer and more detailed as Collier switches to writing out his feelings and confiding more in the readers, helps draw the reader in and question if this is really happening or if Collier has descending into dementia due to a brain tumor. Thankfully, Matheson wisely decides to not confirm or deny the reality of events, allowing the reader to choose for themselves.

Instead, what drives the story is Matheson's ability to put ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances and realistically portray the character's reactions. The premise may be one of fantasy, but the characters are realistic. It's easy to see why Stephen King says Matheson was a big influence on his (King's) works.

Time travel in a romance story is apparently nothing new. But Matheson's strengh is finding a new twist on the old story, bringing in just enough of his own distinctive storytelling style to make it his own. This is a book that will have you rooting for Collier in his quest and heartbroken at the end when it ends in tragedy (as it must, since the ending is set before the story begins.) But it's not the ending that matters so much as the journey. And in the hands of Matheson, this is a journey worth taking.

I bought the book after reading the great reviews and because I like time-travel books. I am very disappointed. The whole book feels more like the ravings of a man half-mad. The transitions from scene to scene are poorly done. The characters are not well-developed. Although time-travel is supposed to be hard to believe to begin with, this story line is particularly unconvincing. I cannot feel for either of the two main characters. I can see how it can make a good movie without the distraction of the poor writing style. The protagonist's ravings about how much he loves this girl whom he has never met and his constant apologies to her once he meets her are just plain annoying. I had to force myself to finish the book. A great let-down.
This is, quite possibly, my all-time favorite book (and I'm an avid reader). I first read it many years ago, before the movie came out (under the title "Bid Time Return"). I've read it twice since then, and I will read it again. I first read it as a hopelessly romantic teenager, and perhaps that colored my experience, but this story sucked me in almost like no other. As I read the book, I completely believed it. After finishing it, I found myself looking to see if it could actually be a true story - it was simply that believable.

While I enjoyed the movie, there is simply no comparison. In my opinion, the book blows away the movie. It's fuller, richer, and more gripping. I don't actually read much of what you would call "romance". It has to have a real story to hold my attention. This book made me laugh, and cry, and it held my attention to the very last page.

This is, by far, one my most favorite of stories. The "true love" of soul mates joined and separated by the lending hand of fate. Richard Matheson is an excellent writter. This story derives straight from the heart and is volleyed back at yours with a clearity that takes you deep into the soul of his characters. The birth of this beautiful story is, in my opinion, the offspring of nearly every time travel, paranormal, romance story available today. If you haven't already, read the book. The movie verision hardly does it justice. I highly recommend this enchanting, and yet sad book to anyone.
If you are a fan of time-travel, you will love this book. This is the same author that wrote I Am Legend (another great novel, but not about time-travel). The book does have its flaws, but overall it is a great story worth checking out.
LikeWhat Dreams May Come, which inspired the movie starring Robin Williams,Somewhere in Timeis the powerful story of a love that transcends time and space, written by one of the Grand Masters of modern fantasy.

Matheson's classic novel tells the moving, romantic story of a modern man whose love for a woman he has never met draws him back in time to a luxury hotel in San Diego in 1896, where he finds his soul mate in the form of a celebrated actress of the previous century.Somewhere in Timewon the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, and the 1979 movie version, starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, remains a cult classic.

(Sword of the Highlands)

(James Graham, a true man in history and a hero)

(Two people from very different times finding love)

(Enchanting Review: Sword Of The Highlands)

(Fun, but not entirely memorable)
This is not close to a novel by Diana Gabaldon. Veronica Wolff is not the sappy romance novelist either. I would say this book is Gabaldon lite. I did like it, I would have liked more content; but for those of us that wish for another D Gabaldon to come along we are still waiting.
Sword of the Highlands is a lot like Karen Marie Moning's highlander series. Veronica Wolff gives life and love to two characters, Magda Deacon and James Graham. It's a tremendous story about a true man in history. James Graham has led many battles in the War of the Three Kingdoms. Wolff provides great insight into this time period.

Magda is an heiress in New York City who works in the Metropolitan museum, restoring paintings. She is called into work for the weekend by her boss Walter to restore seventeenth century paintings for the upcoming exhibit. This is when she first sees the portrait of James Graham and curiosity sparks. She finds out from Walter that James had been captured, imprisoned, and hanged. Walter leaves her to do her job and Madga finds she is unable to concentrate on her work. That is when she is drawn to the portrait and sent back to the seventeenth century to land right in James Graham's lap.

James Graham, the first Marquis of Montrose is the sword of the highlands. He will go to all ends of the Earth to save Scotland and bring justice to his people. He doesn't know what to make of Magda, but he finds himself intrigued by her. Magda knows that she can't leave this time period or the man she is so drawn too.

War follows at their very heals everywhere they go. Magda and James meet memorable and loyal friends who fight along beside them against Campbell and the Covenanters. You can't help but fall in love with James as Magda has.

I truly would like to see the painting of James Graham that inspired this book. It'd be interesting to see if he's as handsome as Wolff described. This is a great read and the first I have read of Veronica Wolff. I promise you, you will not be disappointed.

Robin of Night Owl Romance - 5/5 Hearts

Magda Deacon wortks as an art curater for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While cleaning some old paintings, she finds herself captivated by an old portrait of a seventeenth-century Highlander. As she reaches out to touch the painting, she finds herself falling though time.

James Graham, First Marquis of Montrose, is suprised when he's awaken from a deep sleep to find a woman, Magda, sitting on top of him. The more time James and Magda spend together, the more they find themselves falling for each other. But with war on the horizon, can they make their love work and stay together.

Ms. Wolff writes a passionate tale of two people from very different times finding love. I found this book to to be very entertaining. I was lucky enough to read her first book, Master of the Highlands, and her second book is even better. Her next book is titled Warrior of the Highland. I was unable to find a release date for this one, but keep your eye out for it.

SWORD OF THE HIGHLANDS
VERONICA WOLFF
Historical Romance / Time Travel

Rating: 4.5 Enchantments

Beautiful, auburn-haired Magdalene Deacon, member of Manhattan's most philanthropic society family, made it her business to be the best of the best in the arcane world of identifying, cleaning and restoring old paintings. Since her brother's accidental death, she'd thrown herself into her work - assistant curator of European Art at a prestigious museum. While preparing an exhibit of 17th century paintings, she was captivated by a portrait of James Graham, first Marquis of Montrose. With his charismatic image coming to life in her dreams, Magda was compelled to learn more, and discovered that handsome, vital James was captured, imprisoned, and executed in the prime of life. Compelled to take return to the museum for one more look at his enigmatic portrait, Magda touched the canvas; then reality dissolved.

A resounding "oof" was James Graham's response when a woman landed on top of him in his bed. Although his brain was groggy with sleep, the rest of him was awakening nicely. But although Magda was a nice armful, her obvious panic and disorientation quickly extinguished his initial response. His innate courtesy soon had him soothing her into sleep, but his curious mind took note of her unusual attire, strange personal effects, and oddaccent. He found himself intrigued - a novel sensation for a man who found few females to hold any mystery.

SWORD OF THE HIGHLANDS is an artful blend of historical fiction and romance, sprinkled with a bit of revisionist fantasy and a dash of "what if." Much of the setting, character of the times, and events actually happened. The romance of Magda and James is well developed and utterly believable. While history shows that the real James came to an untimely end, the author's literary ruse , having him disappear into anonymity with his true love (who rescues him from prison), is a much more satisfying resolution. It's an entertaining fancy to note that the name of the real James Graham's wife was also Magdalene. All in all, a delightful read, an entertaining mix of fact and fiction, and a fun romance that convinces the reader that a modern woman could adapt to living in the past and that a man from the past could grow to understand a modern woman.

Enchanting Reviews
July 2008

Veronica Wolff's Sword of the Highlands is a solid, enjoyable read. That said, it just doesn't stick out in my mind beyond that. The characters are interesting enough; the battle scenes, romances, and bedroom scenes are fun. I particularly appreciated that Ms. Wolff included historical notes at the end detailing the actual history that inspired her and the sorts of things she changed---that kind of thing always intrigues me.

I did have some trouble with the visuals. Parts of the story were beautifully detailed and easy to imagine, such as a lovely river bath scene relatively early on in the book. At other times I found myself frowning from page to page as I struggled to map words to a visual image. It's a problem that sometimes distracted from the story and pulled me out of the immersion. This is even the case in one of the sex scenes, which is definitely not a place where you want to find yourself struggling to figure out what on earth the characters were actually doing!

Beyond that, though, while it is a solid read, it just didn't stand out from others like it. The characters didn't seem particularly unusual, 'real,' or lively; the plot didn't have any real surprises to it. It didn't sweep me up in its emotions the way some books do (and that aspect tends to be particularly important in a romance). As a way to pass the time it's a perfectly reasonable choice, but there's nothing about it that makes me want to recommend it over any other decent example of the genre.

One minute, she’s New York heiress and art curator Magda Deacon, enraptured by the Highlander captured in an old portrait. The next, she’s falling through time to 17th-century Scotland—and embarking on the most erotic journey of her life.

(Helplessly addicted)

(My first and best Howard)

(Tops my "Read Again!" List)

(Couldn't Put it Down)

(Son of the Morning)
I became somewhat addicted to Linda Howard after Cry No More and have read some of her other books - some great, some not so great. I kept seeing references to Son of the Morning by reveiwers and at first I wasn't sure about it. But here I am, just now reading it, 10 years after it was written! I'm so glad I did because I couldn't put it down. There are some holes in the plot but it was compelling enough that I could look beyond them. I enjoyed the characters so much and the writing was great. Plus, I'm a total Scotland fanatic so that added an extra element for me. Overall, this book is a classic and I hope it doesn't drop out of publication any time soon.
I was more a historical romance fan so I guess that's the reason I was late to discover Linda Howard. Well Son of the Morning is the best introduction to this writer I can think of. Combining contemporary with historical romance this book is simply awesome. Just be sure to start early in the morning because it will be hard to go to sleep without having finished it.
The story is about Grace, a scholar who stambles upon some old documents that relate to the Knights of the Templar. Unfortunately, soon after she finds these papers her father and husband are getting killed, she goes on the run because she's considered guilty for their deaths and she starts to see images of a large, handsome warrior named Niall. More than half the novel is spent with Grace in the present trying to find what the documents she found mean while her bond with Niall gets stronger and stronger. Despite their not being physically close for so long, Son of the Morning is one of the most soul touching, addictive and simply wonderful novels you'll ever read. The mystery plot adds to the tension and excitement, but it's a romance novel foremost.
Absolutely brilliant, one of the best I've read and I've read A LOT!

Of the thousands of books I've read in my life, this book is at the top of my romance "read again" list. This is the most fun, adventurous, sad, thrilling, entertaining, romantic and intriquing story that Linda Howard has ever written. Grace St. John is a woman you'll never forget... a female character with dimension and depth. You'll cry, you'll laugh, you'll worry, you'll rejoice. Your life will fade in the background as Grace takes center stage and her story becomes your reality. It's obvious that Niall is no slouch. He'd have to be pretty great to draw and keep a woman like Grace St. John! Enjoy!
I won't rehash the plot since others have done that quite well. This story reeled me in from the very beginning. Of all the Linda Howard that I've read, and I've read a lot, this was the novel in which I became most attached to the heroine. I loved that Linda really let us get to know Grace, experience her pain, feel her strength and witness the amazing changes that she went through. I cried more than once for her.

The physical romance comes much later in the story but I was not bothered by that AT ALL. The lead up to Grace and Black Nial's first encounter was quite enchanting!

Son of the Morning is by far my favorite Linda Howard book, and that is saying something, because I love all her books!
New York Timesbestselling author Linda Howard captivates readers in the deeply romantic tale of a contemporary woman who unravels an extraordinary mystery from the past . . . by living it.

A scholar specializing in ancient manuscripts, Grace St. John never imagined that a cache of old documents she discovered was the missing link to a lost Celtic treasure. But as soon as she deciphers the legend of the Knights of the Templar -- long fabled to hold the key to unlimited power -- Grace becomes the target of a ruthless killer bent on abusing the coveted force. Determined to stop him, Grace needs the help of a warrior bound by duty to uphold the Templar's secret for all eternity. But to find him -- and to save herself -- she must go back in time . . . to fourteenth-century Scotland . . . and to Black Niall, a fierce man of dark fury and raw, unbridled desire. . . .

All of Linda Howard's novels are wonderful but this exceptional time-travel is her first foray into paranormal romance--and it's not to be missed. Grace St. John, a scholar, unwittingly discovers the Knights of Templar's secret treasure. Suddenly, her life is upturned when she spies her boss murdering her husband and brother. With no reason to live, except to extract vengeance, Grace becomes a fugitive of the law as she attempts to find an explanation for this horrible act. Grace simultaneously translates 14th century medieval documents written by Black Niall. This embittered knight reaches into Grace's subconscious and the two begin to share dreams 700 years apart.

(Lynn Kurland Review)

(great read!)

(Readable but don't recommend it. This is a formulaic romance novel.)

(I can't finish this book)

(I Loved This Book)
Lynn Kurland is an amazing author! I really enjoy reading her novels. I love the time travelling and all the family connections. If you're wanting to read romance, I definately recommend her. Jamie's story was so great to read :o)
A Dance Through Time (Time Passages Romance)

just finished this book and have to say i loved it! i have read several of her time travel books and wish i had started with this one. loved the characters. good job lynn!
It has the required characters and plot movement but it was lacking somehow. I compare this story to a soft drink that lost its fizz. There was nothing sparkling, surprising or delighting. A few times I wished it would be over. The hero is gruff and loses his temper a lot. He meets her and then over a short time, his heart starts melting for her.
