When it was originally published in 1824, it was heavily criticized as both derivative and indecent. The criticism was so intense that Irving abandoned the writing of fiction and wrote history, biography, and folklore for the remainder of his career.
Yet, two centuries later, the stories have dated well. I'll return to whether the stories can be considered offensive, but modern readers' lack of familiarity with the sources that Irving apparently copied makes the accusation of imitation somewhat moot. In addition to being remarkably readable (and they are certainly never boring), many of the stories seem fresh and even modern.
The collection is divided into four parts: the first, "Strange Stories by a Nervous Gentleman," is a group of ghost stories (many of them notable for their lack of "real" ghosts). Irving uses the framing technique of a friend relating an overnight stay in an old mansion with a group of gentlemen trapped by a storm. They tell each other ghost stories, and in some of these the characters themselves tell tales (stories within stories within stories). The second section, "Buckthorne and His Friends," includes humorous anecdotes about the backgrounds of a group of eccentric authors attending a dinner. "The Italian Banditti" features stories of the highway robbers who afflict travelers in Italy; this section reads almost like a romantic Western novel. And, finally, "The Money Diggers" claims to be the long-lost papers of Diedrich Knickerbocker (Irving's fictional author of "A History of New York"); these spirited yarns of pirates and buried treasure set in and around the island of Manhattan are pure entertainment.
There are a number of surprising nuggets here: too many, in fact, to single them out. Although modern readers will find it difficult to see what's offensive about this collection (some readers were apparently insulted by Irving's portrayal of Englishmen, for example), there's one rather scandalous and delightfully creepy ghost story, "The Adventure of the German Student," that deserves special comment. Without giving too much away, let's just say that it can only be read as a story about necrophilia and goes further than anything even Poe ever wrote.
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Wonderful Book!!!) 『I have to say, starting off, I was doubtful I would like this book. But once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down!!! Susan Plunkett grabs your attention with warm characters and never ending witt. Winifred McCanless and Ransom Hamiltion are two completely different people from different times, but somehow Winifred ends up in Ransom's wife's body after she gets struck by lightning and dies. Ransom's reactions to Winifred's claims of being from the future and shocking him are priceless. There love is tangible. I was routing for Winifred (aka Felicity) all the way. Ransom is a complete rogue, but trust me, you'll love him anyway!!!!』
(A Wonderful Time Travel) 『I had never read this author before and I actually picked this one up when it first hit the shelves. This book was funny, passionate, had a air of danger and the ending made sense. The review before pretty much wrapped up the storyline. I just want to add that I have since bought a lot more of Susan Plunkett books but none of them come close to catching me from page 1 like this one. I have loaned this out to several people since then and they are always pleased. In fact when trying to introduce friends that do not neccesarily read Time Travel books, to the genre this is one of my favorites to let them sink their teeth into.』
(Hot enough to melt an Alaskan glacier.) 『Highly RecommendedWinifred McCanless is a brilliant research scientist, fiercely independent, and has a basketball scoring record that would put many Lakers to shame. Winifred also is as plain as a board fence, wears contact lenses thick enough to stretch her eyelids and the only abiding love she has ever known came from her dead brother.
Felicity Forsythe is beautiful, tender and has the mind of a six year old. All of her life she has known nothing but the most gentle love and affection.
Ransom Hamilton, handsome, powerful and lonely, dreams of a home, wife and an heir for his vast timber holdings and shipping company. He has waited to marry until he can give his new wife anything she desires. Unfortunately, he has waited too long. By proxy he has been duped into marriage with the witless Felicity while her step-sister, Cassandra, has wed another.
An electrical storm of momentous proportion streaks across the 1996 Los Angeles sky, hurling Winifred back one hundred years to Sitka, Alaska and into the drowned body of Felicity who foolishly fell off of the docked boat that brought her to Ransom.
When Winifred/Felicity regains consciousness she is stunned to discover she now owns the lush body of a goddess and is married to the most handsome man she has ever seen. Unfortunately, he is also an arrogant, male chauvinist whose touch drives her to the brink of heaven.
True love never runs smoothly and "Remember Love" is no exception. Mistrust, fear and greed endanger the fragile bonds that begin to grow between Winifred and Ransom. The frigid winter winds that sweep across the tundra carry not only betrayal and treachery, but seem to freeze time letting the lovers see clearing what is real and what was only imagined.
Susan Plunkett, one of Jove/Berkley's Time Passages premiereauthors, gives us an entertaining romp through 1866 guided by high spirited Winifred as she leads a bewildered Ransom on a passionate chase until he catches her. Susan's love scenes are rich and sensuous. Her characters are well defined and the plot is exciting and full of wondrous discoveries. Ms. Plunkett has all of the promise of becoming one of the superstars of romance.

Where you were once tall and unattractive, you are now petite, beautiful with a gorgeous body. There are a few negative catches: you were a scientist in your previous life, now you have a simple mind. And then, too, there is that new, handsome husband to contend with. Join Felicity Forsythe and Ransom Hamilton as they learn to deal with the impossible and fall in love. This is a time-travel story filled to the brim with surprise, promise and everlasting love. It is a pleasurable, page-turning read by a talented author whom I look forward to reading again.Remember Loveis a Time Passages Romance, a monthly time-travel series recently introduced by Jove.』

She was now in fact on a service of a kind altogether different from that which had yet occupied her. In his address to the crew, upon taking command off Terceira, Captain Semmes had promised that the first moment they were in a condition of training and discipline, to enable them to encounter the enemy, they should have an opportunity ofdoing so. That time had come, and laying aside for a short period her more especial role of annihilating as rapidly as possible the enemy's commerce, the Alabama set steadily out in search of a fight. The grand expedition of General Banks, which had been the subject of so much speculation in the United States, and of which their newspapers had long before duly informed the Confederate cruiser, seemed to offer the most favourable opportunity possible for such an enterprise. The expedition would, of course, be accompanied by one or more armed vessels, but the principal portion of it would be composed of troop-ships, crowded with the enemy's soldiers; and should the Alabama but prove victorious in the fight, these transports would be a prize of more practical importance than all the grain and all the oil ever carried in a merchantman's hold. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A truly captivating story) 『What a wonderful read...............engrossing in nature and the lore and legend of Scotland. Her writing took me there with the characters. An amazing story of survival and the power that love holds on one another. Facinating and intense at one point in the book, so as I could not put it down. The best an author can do. I will now go back and find the first book and read it. I just happened upon Circle of Time in the library. Lucky me.』
(Great Sequel...As Good As The First!!) 『I loved Lynn Hanna's first book "The Starry Child" and was eager to read the second in this series and boy was I glad I rushed out to buy this book "Circle of Time". Both books are a tribute to the bindings of family, history and the healing powers of love through time. These books are a must read for any mythical romance lover!! Why not as captivating as the first book, "Circle of Time" holds it own and more!!』
(great sequel) 『I loved it! I hope there is a third one in the works cause I'm there if there is. I love how the whole family all once lived another magical life togther in the past and have to correct the past mistakes to make everything right in the preseant. great read I highly recommend it!』
(A whimsical journey into Highland Territory.) 『A bit of a fantastical waste, but an amusing and magical tale in its own way. This is the story of the Macinnes family, a Scottish family empowered with special powers of a sort. They have the ability to commune with spirits, ancestors of old, some telepathic qualities, as well as the ability to conjure up and see faeries and fairy dust in magical forests. The story begins when the father of the Macinnes clan is downed in a horrible plane wreck, and from there the reader is taken into lands unimaginable and fantasies galore. It was a bit too Wonderlandish for me, but a good escape on a quiet evening in front of the fire if you are so inclined. The romance aspect of the story is truly washed up and overused, but the rest of the tale is bouncy and magnetic.』
(Excellent! You have to read this book.) 『This book ties together the love of a family and the almost special powers of the three women in the story. The characters are so real and powerful. The message is still one that love conquers all.』 『The magic of Scotland... The mysteries of love... The magnificent time-travel romance from the author of The Starry Child

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Found it a bit improbable...) 『...even for fiction. Hard to accept that someone could be so heavily into astrology, etc, in a time when people were being burned at the stake for this. Also that someone could be zapped 500 years into the future and accept the radical changes so quickly. I love time travel romances but it's easier to enjoy and accept when someone is snapped back rather than forward.』
(Great -time travel as it was meant to be) 『In 1413 England, a person does not defy their liege without expecting dire consequences. Astronomer Galen de Cormer worries about the lecherous demands of their lord, Preston Claybourne, who nonchalantly decides to make Galen's gorgeous daughter his mistress. Desperate to protect his beloved child from their cruel master, Galen embarks on a dangerous scheme that ultimately propels Ailith into 1998 New Orleans.
Joshua Claybourne Kenley enjoys the live recreations of the medieval times put on by his club. When Ailith lands in his tent, he figures she is just another player, but he is irritated by her disturbing his serenity. A frightened Ailith manages to hide inside Joshua's large house, but ultimately he finds her. He denies her claim of time travel, but cannot deny his attraction to the young lady. As he begins to realize that Ailith is telling the truth, he falls in love with her. She reciprocates, but feels that she must return to the past in order to s! ave her parents from the wrath of Lord Claybourne.
Fans of time travel romances need to make time for Christine Holden's delightful debut novel, A TIME FOR US. Both eras are intelligently described and the characters are all interesting. Though, Ms. Holden falls into the common trap of this sub-genre of having the chronological traveler expeditiously adapt to a radically different world (after all this time, this reviewer still has not adapted to the net), fans will devour this novel and look forward to more works from a skillful newcomer.

The police must have locked him up--or did they? She needed to get back to her job.
Out for the evening, she meets Josh. Who should appear in the night club--the Stalker. This time, will he finish what he tried before? Josh to the rescue. Can she ever get away from him?
Sarah flees to Moose Creek, Wyoming, where her Great Grandmother lived. Reading the diary of her great grandmother, she enters the church that is still there. Staring up at the stained glass window, Sarah is transported back to 1870. Suddenly, Sarah has to adjust to living the frontier life. (Fun time travel romance) 『Sarah Martin remains jumpy after being assaulted with fists and a knife by a lunatic named Jack. Her best friend LeeAnn takes her to a singles bar where she meets a seemingly nice fellow Josh. However, Jack arrives, grabs Sarah and tries to kill her for the second time. Sarah presses charges, with plenty of witnesses able to testify. That night, Jack makes bail and is released. Sarah flees Los Angeles heading to her great-grandmother's home in Wyoming.
Sarah arrives in Moose Creek where she enters a church and stares at a stained glass window. The next Sarah knows is she has awakened in 1870 where she meets Joshua Campbell, who insists she is his mail order bride. Sarah meets her ancestors, who like everyone else cannot understand Sarah's ways. However, that does not stop Joshua from falling in love with her. She reciprocates his feelings, but rejects his consistent marriage proposals because her time is one-hundred thirty years in the future.
YESTERYEAR'S LOVE is an interesting time travel romance that takes a modern person back to the wild west. The opening chapter in LA adds nothing to the tale. However, once Sarah lands in the nineteenth century, the story line turns enjoyable. Most charming is Sarah's actions and words causing much consternation among the Moose Creek residents. However, Sarah's own reactions seem off-kilter for someone who showed six years of interest in the era starting with her great grandmother's diary. Still Janet Quinn paints a warm tale that leaves readers thoroughly entertained.

Maggie Owen's work on a grant to find a lost necropolis is filled with the superstitions of the local workers. Nothing, however, prepares her for being swept back into the past to the time of Pharaoh Akhenaton. Maggie will have to learn to deal with the Egyptian political intrigues while falling in love with Ramose Nakh-Min, one of Queen Nefertiti's relatives. Will the same power that sent Maggie back to Ramose allow her to stay with him forever?
I have to confess that I was more than thrilled to see Kathryn Meyer Griffith had another story out about Egypt. Years ago, I remember reading another book by her that featured Egyptian characters (although somewhere along the way I've lost my copy of that book) and still remember being impressed by it. I was not disappointed with EGYPTIAN HEART.
Kathryn Meyer Griffith shines when writing stories such as EGYPTIAN HEART. Her gift at incorporating historical facts about the Egyptian pharaohs and the politics surrounding them is simply incredible. The vivid descriptions of the Egyptian desert and the household of Ramose are so real that it is easy to envision them.
Maggie is the kind of heroine that makes the reader just want to cheer. Even in an environment like ancient Egypt, she is fighting against the injustices she sees and trying to incorporate positive changes. Her upbeat attitude is refreshing.
Kathryn Meyer Griffith is an author who has stood the test of time. Her books today are just as strong as her past efforts. Without a doubt, she is an autobuy author for me as her books remain treasured keepers. EGYPTIAN HEART is easily recommended!

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Facinating) 『This book started out slow - but reels you in quickly and efficently. After the first few chapters, this book is hard to put down. The story is fantastic and the characters are so believable. This novel is very well written and I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys diving into a great story.』
(Delicious and Captivating!) 『Jeanette does a masterful job of weaving history, politics, intrigue, and love. Her detail to the landscape will positively transport you to another time and dimension. The characters are so realistic and raw you will miss them terribly the minute you finish the last page. Don't miss Frankie and Jillian's story. This is art. I would read absolutely anything this gifted woman writes!』
(Like a Fine Wine) 『that needed a little more time before it was opened. It was full-bodied, great legs, beautiful nose but sounded some sour notes on the finish. This writer is truly without equal with regard to her exhaustive research into contemporary and medieval Ireland, and she loads her prose with such exquisite details. Her characters, from the contemporary lovestory of Jillian and Frankie to the medieval romance of Nell and Donal, are each sound and three-dimensional. But the story takes a wrong turn with the light treatment of the demise of a minor character, in the wake of which I felt the main characters should certainly have behaved with more decorum. Three-quarters of the way through, the author falls back on tired devices, like the confession that keeps getting interrupted until it's too late, etc., and at any rate, I lost much of my empathy for Jillian by the end of the book. Frankie, as the hero, stopped making interesting choices and was just not compelling romantically. The love scenes just left me cold.』
(Compelling, Sensual, Memorable) 『This book was breathtaking! I loved it from the beginning, and it only got better with each page I read. Even now, months after I finished it, I still find myself thinking about Frankie and Jillian. And I would have enjoyed it just as much if the time travel aspect was omitted because I was so completely enthralled with the contemporary part of the story. The characters really jump off the pages. Ms. Baker is a wonderful writer, and it's obvious that she knows Ireland well.』
(Amazing.) 『It's been a looooong time since I've gotten so pulled into a book that I've abandoned EVERYTHING in order to park myself on the couch and read the bulk of it in one sitting. NELL absolutely blew me away, put me through an emotional wringer the likes of which I haven't been through in years. Jeanette Baker writes with a clear, deft, evocative hand, bringing her characters to brilliant life. And she brings the reader right into that life with them. I've no doubt at all that these characters--and this book--will stay with me for some time to come.』 『
With "characters so realistic that their emotions seem to leap off the pages"(The Literary Times),Jeanette Baker's evocative romances weave past and present into one luminescent tapestry of love that surpasses the bounds of time. Now she holds us spellbound with the story of a woman whose future depends on a betrayal that happened five hundred years before....

Now, from the court of Henry VIII to the violent streets of modern Belfast, Nell and Jillian will become two souls joined in one courageous battle to prove that neither prison bars nor the hands of time can stop the power of love.』
