(Amazing Series!)
(Just...Ok)
(Highlander book review)
(Wedding the highlander) Once I open one of janet Chapman's books I do not want to put it down. She keeps the story line interesting, and humorious. I highly recommend this book.
Ruth Riddle I read each and every book from this series in order and nonstop. OMG...What an amazing experience Granted there were some characters that I loved thoughout the series. One of the things that most impressed me is we really get to see the happily ever after throughout the series.
If you have the money and can afford to buy the whole set, that is the experience that you are shooting for from this author. Chapman is creative funny, and sincere with these characters and you feel the love between main players as well as the family they have around them. After all those books I was still left wanting more.
I passed my set to my sister. She calls me at the end of each one to discuss the new characters, the new dynamic they'll create in future novels in the series.
Truly a fun read. The best read since my first historical romance (Knight in Shining Armor).
I got this book because of the reviews. But after reading it I had a few problems with the story. Things happen super fast between Michael&Libby. One minute Michael and Libby meet (hardly any conversation between the two) and the next he is in her bed in the middle of the night and she's ok with it, and so it goes with things happening between this two that hardly know anything about one anoher but act like they've know eachother for years (no explanation as how they got to that point). The dialogue between the two falls flat. I felt no connection between the two. It was almost boring. I loved this book and all the "Highlander" books!! Janet Chapman is an excellent author.. A little insite in to the book would be nice. A small peice to read to get a feel for the book and so it would help in my decision on buying. But since i read a book by Janet Chapman before; I knew that this would be just as good as the other. When I read her books it is like a movie playing in my head while i read, because i can picture all of it. wonderfully inviting. A runaway beauty finds love in the brawny arms of a handsome stranger...Talented surgeon Libby Hart is fleeing to Pine Creek, Maine, when her car spins out of control and crashes into a pond. She is rescued by Michael MacBain, a medieval highlander trapped in the modern world by a wizard's spell. Wounded in love once before by a modern woman, Michael wants nothing to do with Libby, but he can't resist the intense desire she stirs within him. Can this proud warrior pledge his heart to a woman whose secret threatens to change their lives forever? Rerations < Wedding the Highlander >

(Very slow.)
(Disappointed.......)
(fantastic love story and a Worthy HERO)
(Love it! Great great book) This was my first book that I read by Kristin Hannah. It started out a little slow, then caught my interest until, for the umpteenth time I read that he loved his wife but he couldn't stand her. Even though there were children I found it hard to believe that if they were so unhappy for YEARS that Jack stayed married to Amarylis AND remained monogamous.
I know Jack had a lot of baggage because of what happened during the Civil War. Also, his marriage was poisoned for a long time but I got tired of Lissa/Tess constantly trying to fix things between her and Jack through the first half of the book and Jack never believing her. Jack saw that Lissa was different (it was like night and day) and she never gave him a reason to doubt her after she "changed". The book also had a quick secondary story that seemed hurried at the end.
Still, there was something about the story that was nice. I just can't recommend it. I'll try some other titles by this author since I know she has potential for a better story. I am a HUGE Kristin Hannah fan! I absolutely LOVE many of her books. This one, however, was very slow. I was over half way through it before it started to "pick up" and spark my interest. The ending is triumphant so it wasn't a total waste. It's an easy read. Classic Hannah character development. Overall, ok. Not her best. I had only read one book by this author previously and found that one to be a fast paced story that only took a couple of days to read but what I enjoyed about it the most was the omission of foul language. I am not a prude and most of the books I read do have some offensive language in them. But this book "Once In Every Life" was filled with profanity, and especially the use of God, Jesus, and Christ in conjunction with swearing. Far more than was necessary to get the author's point across. I am disappointed as I ordered three of her books at the same time and I am hoping they are more like the first book but afraid they will be like this one. Ms. Hannah ruined a beautiful story by using too many pages for swear words. Just one reader's humble opinion..... The previous reviews have pretty much said all there is to say about the basic storyline - but after always complaining about emotionally battered h's - i wanted to say how refreshing it was to read about a Hero's side after him going through the abuse.
I loved how the H recovered from this and how the heroine truly helped him. I could rave and rave about how good it felt to read about a Hero who's had a tough life without punishing the heroine because of it - but i'll leave it with a 'book well worth reading'.
Ash Emotionally strong and passionate. The characters really makes you ache with sympathy and compassion. I loved it from beginning to end. My only complain... and this is very minor... is that a few things tends to be repetitious. The mentioning of that pain and far in his eyes, for instant, is used a little too often. Not that it fails to draw one's compassion every time... I just thought a few new adjectives and nouns here and there wouldn't hurt. Tess Gregory's brilliant career as a research scientist hides her longings for husband and child. Though deaf, she is a free spirit -- a woman full of life and love. She is struck down all too soon. But for Tess, a new life begins at her death, in post-Civil War America. She is now Amarylis Rafferty, wife and mother of three -- and she can hear. Shocked and disoriented by her new surroundings, she is drawn into the savage heartache burdening the family, especially her husband, Jack, a man who fears himself capable of anything.

(A very good romantic paranormal read w/ historical fiction elements as well)
(5 stars)
(Time Travel at Its Best!)
(Excellent Debut by Laurie Brown) Fun read and great characters. I love a good mystery infused with some romance and humor! Ms. Brown's book "What Would Jane Austen Do" was just as good and I look forward to seeing if she writes anymore books with similar settings. I had never read anything by Laurie Brown prior to this book, but was intrigued by the possibility of a historical paranormal romance - all those elements in one book just HAD to be a fun read.
The characters, albeit not entirely three dimensional, did tend to follow the normal patterns of behavior and were not jumping into bed two seconds after meeting. (I really hate it when writers rush the beginning feelings of love - that's the best part!) The relationship did actually develop over the course of the book, which always seems to enhance the inevitable declaration of love toward the end of the story.
I was very impressed by the accuracy of the customs of the time period. It was obvious that the writer went to great lengths to have those particulars covered. The extra effort added to the appeal of the setting, and at times I really did feel like the character - an average everyday girl trapped in a time period you had to see to believe. I also appreciated the language used, and felt that it only added to the allure of the time period.
I would say that this is a great read for anyone who wants a good twist on an old romance story.... although the climax of the story does follow a bit of a Scooby-esk feel, it is still a fun read that is easily enjoyed without much effort. If you have the time and want just a fun historical romance/ paranormal romance book, pick this one up for sure! Josie Drummond finds herself not only hired by a ghost, but as part of her work, taking a trip back in time to prevent her employer, Deverell Thornton, the Ninth Earl of Waite, from meeting with a ruinous event. A modern woman in the Regency era is somewhat of a fish out of water, but with the help of Deverell the ghost and her own wits, she manages. She also begins to fall in love with the living man, Dev, who is in his own way as charming as the ghost he will become. Romance might be the angle she would like best to pursue, but there are mysteries to solve, a fraud to unmask, and she does need to decide which version of the Earl of Waite she belongs with, all before Deverell's power is exhausted and she has no hope of ever returning home.
***** Combining multiple unusual plot devices into a compelling romance that sweeps across the centuries, Ms. Brown gives her readers a fascinating story filled with twists and surprises, particularly the startling ending. Josie's love triangle is perhaps the one that of all literary triangles can be considered truly unique. How many people fall in love with the same man, but have to choose which version of him to be with? Though this is clearly a satisfyingly complete tale that leaves little to no room for it to become a series, readers will want to keep their eye out for more from this talented author, at least this one shall. *****
Amanda Killgore I really didn't care how authentic facts relating to the Regency period were, I liked the book for pure entertainment. I liked the plot and the characters. I don't particularly like "period" or "historical romances", but I do like the premise of time travel. I just enjoyed this book, the story and the characters. I really couldn't predict how the book would end and was actually in suspense as it neared the end! If you like ghosts, historical romance, time travel and great characters - pick up this book. An American ghostbuster finds herself confronted by a early 1800 ghost who wants her time travel with him. He wants her to prove the gypsy that has stealing from his mother that she is a fake. She does not think time travel is real but is willing to spend time with the handsome ghost for scientific purposes. This book was excellent! - Enjoy!
I would also recommended; How to Abduct a Highland Lord by Karen Hawkins, Spirited Away&Into Thin Air by Cindy Miles, Have Glass Slippers Will Travel by Lisa Cach and Crazy For You by Kate Angell. A modern career woman thrust back in time into the glittering Regency period and the arms of an unscrupulous rake…
Josephine Drummond is a professional paranormal researcher (aka, a ghostbuster) hired to prove that the ghost of Lord Deverell Thornton, the very handsome Earl and a notorious rake in his time, haunts the crumbling Waite Castle. But the ghost drags Josephine back to the Regency period to help him try to prevent the swindle that impoverished the Earl and threatens to turn his castle into a most undignified modern-day tourist attraction.
Josephine has to contend with being a modern career woman trying to navigate the complex social scene of the Regency period, make sure no one discovers her real identity and unmask a charlatan. But all of these are easier than resisting her undeniable attraction to the Earl, who is clearly determined to sweep her off her feet. Rerations < Hundreds of Years to Reform a Rake >

(cant wait for the next one)
(Five Immortal brothers, Five Witches and Five Goddess must now gather to defeat an ancient Demon) This set is a very good set&hard to put down til I get to the end What a shame Ashley was stuck writing the conclusion of this series and felt the need to leave such a great character like Hunter with such a small part. Hunter is free spirited and lovable. The whole affinity with animals could make a great tale and yet, even the lion plays a small part when there could have been so much to work with.
The gathering of all the brothers, the ensuing disappearances of the brothers, the waiting around, and the explanations was a bit dull and caused the story to drag at intervals. Overall it was good, but not great. Agree with most reviews. Not quite a 4 but a decent continuation of the series, and ending an aspect that could not drag on anymore, and I like the hero Hunter's character. Addition of Darius was confusing and the brothers did not seems to like each other very much once they finally all got together, was not expecting a lovefest but more than what I got.... I am a reader, read any thing I can pick up. This Book entertained me. I found myself waiting for the next book. Then waiting for the next book. My daughter picked it up and now we are both waiting for the next book. The last of the Immortal warriors, Hunter often tagged "the crazy one" has just woken from a three-some. He liked to have fun and these days his fun was never serious, just a good time and a good-bye in the morning. He'd been awakened by the house cat which had been scratching around for food. The next thing he experiences was pain as The Calling pulled at him. And then it stopped. One minute he was feeding a domestic kitty in Minnesota and the next he's on a Californian island just off the coast of Mexico and in the lion's den (literally).
Leda Stowe is a witch whose element is air (Amber's is earth, Lexi's fire, and Christine's is water -- see where this is going?). Until recently she'd been a member of the Coven of Light but had done the unthinkable, experimenting with death magic to save her terminally ill husband. The Coven hadn't appreciated her success and neither had her husband. Twice rejected, she focused on her animal rescue vocation on the deserted island with one her current projects a bear named Taro soon to be relocated to the wilds in Japan and a lion who'd been tortured by a Mexican drug runner, that she'd named Mukasa. His fate was still uncertain.
Estranged from the Coven, Leda had not participated in the Calling. Still it seems each of the warriors had been sent to the place they were most needed. Imagine Leda's surprised to find a half naked Immortal warrior in her lion's pen. Even more surprising was the fact that Mukasa, who didn't trust any other human besides her, didn't seem to mind his presence in the least. It soon becomes clear that Hunter has an affinity for animals in addition to beautiful women and Leda certainly falls into that category.
After telling her that the lion would prefer to roam the island to being caged, he suggests a little activity for them as well, much to the consternation of Leda's partner who had been giving her space to recover from her divorce. Naught boy!
Leda is definitely attractive, and soon learns that Hunter has a sad story of his own. He'd loved once, very deeply. He'd married a mortal woman and had given her two children. Then the uber demon (the very same that was now draining the world of life magic, although he doesn't yet know this) had killed his little family. His wife had died for him and his babies had followed. He would never allow anyone to do that for him again. He became determined to be a love 'em and leave 'em kind of guy from that day on. This is how he copes. But if he were ever to love again the woman would be exactly like Leda.
The demon presence descends on Leda's island. Leda thinks that the demon essence within her has drawn it but Hunter knows it is he who the demon is after and sends it packing. All in a day's work and the minute the threat is over he's back to angling for sex.
Leda's soul had been tainted by her bargain with the demon and she fears what that would do to him if she were to succumb to his charm. Hunter informs her that he can remove the blackness -- through sex of course! This mean she has to trust him implicitly. Fortunately it works for as he later tells her, had it not he would have had to kill her.
Nope Hunter had no love for demons so when Leda's half demon, half witch pal Samantha comes to her for help in locating her mother who has disappeared, Hunter is not inclined to trust her. Like the vampires who have allied with his brothers Samantha contains death magic but is not evil. And though there is no love lost between her and her father it soon becomes readily apparent that the demon is deeply in love with his mortal wife, just as Hunter had been. Samantha also explains the reason for the Calling.
Before Leda can consider what to do next, she has to round up Mukasa who Hunter has given free reign of the island. When they find him, they also discover that magical creatures also share the island with them, water spirits known as the Undine. Dyanne tells her that as the life magic in the world diminishes her people have been dying. She implores Hunter to employ his powers to heal them. Not knowing of Tain's plight he tells her to ask him as he is the healer among the five brothers. Her response is cryptic. She tells him that he will find his brother and once he does he will have to choose a path. Each will be painful but a choice must be made. She tells Leda she must choose a path as well. Hunter tells her that while he is willing to go forth and find out what is happening, he won't allow her to leave until the world is safe again. Imagine her consternation. However when she awakes in the middle of the night, she finds Hunter down by the sea communing with his mother Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction -- and creation. Kali tells him of Tain's plight and the need for all the brothers to unite to save him. She too talks to him of choices and sacfice. The Goddess takes her leave with a command to Leda to be good to her son.
Leda feels she has no choice but to leave Hunter behind on the island to care for her animals and casts a sleep spell upon him so that she can slip away to L.A. to help Samantha unchallenged. He'd planned to use the animals as an excuse to leave her behind, but now the tables have been turned and Hunter is not about to allow her to go into danger alone. Mukasa wants to go with him and when the Undine promises to take care of the bear while he's gone, he is able to leave with a clear conscience.
Suffice it to say that after quite a bit of action Hunter and Leda make it to Amber and Adrian in Seattle. Darius and Kalen who had also been on their way were apparently not so lucky and the two remaining Immortals fear that the demon now possesses three of their brothers instead of one. In spite of the fact that it's readily apparent that the fulfillment of the demons evil plan requires that all five be together, they also realize that they must be together to defeat the menace. Hunter and Adrian must now find a way to join their brothers without the Old One's knowledge. As Kali had imparted to Leda success would require them all -- five Immortals, five witches and five Goddesses to bring down the ancient demon. Who will the fifth witch be and what must they all do to restore Tain to sanity and destroy the demon? Yes, there is a resolution which is most satisfying, but the story is not finished. Four new tales are on the way.
THE GATHERING is filled with deep emotion, the passion of each pair of lovers, loyal though often unlikely friendships, maternal and brotherly love edged with action and suspense, a plethora of magical creatures and best of all a touch of humor. Hunter puts me to mind of a number of Sandra Hill's naughty but oh so sexy Viking heroes. Wouldn't it be great to see a Norse Immortal show up in a future tale. Hm that's an intriguing thought.
Ah well, Tain's much awaited story THE REDEEMING is next and the reader will have a good idea who his mate will be by the end of THE GATHERING. I can't wait to see how that's going to work and of course what Cerridwen, his mother is going to say about that. ~ for PNR Reviews Created at the dawn of time to protect humanity, the ancient warriors have been nearly forgotten, though magic lives on--in vampires, werewolves, the Celtic Sidhe, and other beings. But now one of their own has turned rogue, and the world is again in desperate need of theIMMORTALS.
He was known as "the crazy one." And Leda Stowe could see why after finding the stunning half-naked warrior in her lion's pen--unarmed and completely unafraid. Though he could somehow soothe the temperamental beast, nothing could calm the desire that sparked through her body at his touch. She wished they could hide away together on her island forever, but the world thrummed with danger. Before Leda could claim Hunter for herself, they would have to join the other Immortals to face the greatest trial yet: THE GATHERING Rerations < The Gathering (Immortals, Book 4) >

customer 's review (The heroine is not smart and the hero is a bully)
(GREAT SERIES)
(Loved this series!!!)
(Nice Tale)
(Quite A Good Book!!) This was my first Janet Chapman novel and I didn't like it (I tried a second one, not in the "Highlander" series and didn't like it any better). The heroine is supposed to be this brilliant rocket scientist, but she sure is dumb (although the author did give us a couple of scenes where she could use her math to save the day...sort of). This "brilliant" woman was in a plane crash and doesn't think that maybe she ought to head to the hospital (or heck, there is no involvement from any authorities in the crash?) The overbearing hero thinks he can do a better job taking care of the heroine than anyone else, even though he has no experience.
I didn't buy the instant romance...lust sure, but not the "I love you" bit. The sideline with the baby was also far fetched (seriously, if your baby sister died would you agree to not be inconvienced by making a couple of trips during the year to have a service now and then again later? It makes the family look uncaring).
I was hoping that this book would be a bit like Karen Marie Moning's highlander series that also involve time travel and modern women...but this book was nothing like that. Skip it, or if you have to read it, get it at the library. This whole series is delicious. It has adventure, love, paranormal excitment and conflict. Each book is unique and wonderful. Strongly recommend this whole series. You come away feeling good about life. This is the first book. It starts with the story of Greylen and Grace. A keeper! I read each and every book from this series in order and nonstop. OMG...What an amazing experience Granted there were some characters that I loved thoughout the series. One of the things that most impressed me is we really get to see the happily ever after throughout the series.

I passed my set to my sister. She calls me at the end of each one to discuss the new characters, the new dynamic they'll create in future novels in the series.
Truly a fun read. The best read since my first historical romance (Knight in Shining Armor).
The first three books of the Chapman Highlander series has been sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read for two years. I finally cracked open the first and enjoyed what I found. Well developed characters and an interestingly told story make this tale a treat. I truly liked Grey and Grace, but more so individually than as a pair. I felt the romance was truer in the beginning than as the story progressed and I was expecting something steamier with the love scenes. Truth be told, it's hard to compete with Karen Marie Moning when it comes to time traveling Highlanders. I really enjoyed this book. This is the first book I have read from this author. I enjoyed the story and characters. Will definitely read more!
A feisty beauty tempted by a bold highlander's touch...When a plane crash strands brilliant scientist Grace Sutter on an icy mountaintop in Maine, she finds herself alone in the wilderness with the only other surviving passenger -- Greylen MacKeage,a sexy, medieval warrior who's been tossed through time to find the woman he's destined to love. Forced together to survive the harsh, wintry landscape, neither expects the fierce passion that flares between them. But Grace is not used to letting her heart take control, and Greylen will settle for nothing less than her heart's surrender.... Rerations < Charming the Highlander >

(Not Really A Happy Ending)
(Read it for the characters!)
(Beware)
(Great read!) Wonderful book, This is my type of book were modern day meets the past, very interesting in how one handles the differences. I wanted to like this book so much. I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of the story. Then the screwball comedy abruptly turned deadly serious. Which would have worked out all right, except nothing was resolved at the end. Tom's suffering was trivialized, and Seph didn't grow as a person, nor did their relationship. It was such a disappointment. *** Back cover synopsis *** Wandering the Pittsburgh airport before a business trip, Seph decided to kill time with some preflight shopping - anything to get her mind off Tom Fraser, her irresistible, dimple-chinned coworker turned travel buddy. So when a pair of to-die-for pink stilettos calls her name from a store window, she tries them on - only to be swiftly transported back to the eighteenth century and flung aboard a turbulent ship sailing the Mediterranean! There, Seph is stunned to meet Phillip Drummond, an arrogant British pirate and the spitting image of Tom. Phillip has summoned her back in time to straighten out his complete mess of a life - for he is the burly hero in the romance novel she someday hopes to write, and she is responsible for his destiny. Seph starts to fall for the smolderingly sexy Phillip. And when Tom is thrown into the mix, she doesn't know what - or who - she wants. Seph soon realizes that spotting the perfect pair of shoes may be easy, but finding the perfect man can be a real trip.
*** Personal opinion *** Wasn't as interesting as I thought it would be but it still holds some worth reading points to it. The characters' performances definitely made up for the unbelievable plot of events with the time traveling thingy. Seph's character is a very intelligent and independent woman who has really great wits. Sometimes her thoughts to herself cracks me up. Then there's the sexy-witted Captain Drum, he is such a sexy guy that would definitely make you want to wish you can travel back to 1706 to meet him ^_* . And then there's the ever so smart and charming Tom, a definite hottie that really turns you on. In the bad side of the book, in my opinion, it was unbelievable how Seph could fall for Drum's "lack of evidence" claiming of how he is "her" character in her future fiction novel and the fact that he was the one that summoned her. The way how she accepted the time traveling situation was a little bit too calm. There wasn't really a clear explanation of how Drum could share Seph's thoughts and the knowledge of how he knew he was a character of her imagination. The book would've been more enjoyable if these mysterious were solved. The most disappointing turn of events in this book was the unclearness relationship of Tom and Seph. I was looking forward to seeing some definite answers but it seemed like their possibility of a blossom relationship relies on the readers' own imagination. While I love time travel stories this one is real confusing....one minute she is buying shoes the next she is back in 1706. One of the main characters Drumm is aware who she is....yet she doesn't have a clue who he is or why she is there when she is the one that created him or so they would have you believe...If you don't have alot of patience don't bother reading this book. I know some reviewers loved this book but for the life of me I can't figure out why or how come they kept reading it. I personally stopped because it has started to give me a headache. Seph Pyle is at the Pittsburgh airport with co-worker Tom Fraser when a killer pair of pink stilettos catch her eye in a store window. What better way to fill time while waiting for their flight to be called. The fit, color, feel has never been better. She plunks down her credit card, snaps the last strap in place, and finds herself on board a ship in 1706. The captain is quick to explain her arrival. After all, this is Seph's doing. He is merely a character in her book and he wants spoilers.
I have to tell you, I loved this book. Yes, there are a few bumps but nothing unforgivable. The characters were likable, fun, and real. When I read the back cover and saw two love interests, I knew whose side I was on. Umm, no. Tom won me over. I loved that he didn't spend all of his time not believing her story. And his little test to see if she had traveled, this is a guy you want to have around.
The idea that an author ends up in her own unwritten story was a great hook, and I wished this could have been expanded on a little more. With that said, the book did not lack plot.
Can we talk cover art for a minute? I am not a fan of typical romance covers, but I like this one. I think it is because the artist got it right. The cover depicts the story. Even the shoe's details are there.
This is not a by-the-book romance or time travel story. YES! (Sorry. Reviewer commentary.) I enjoy both of these genres, but this book had me turning the page because I didn't know what to expect next. My fingers so itched to flip to the last few pages before I was finished. I resisted. :)

(THIS BOOK IS NO "OUTLANDER"...)
(Lynn Kurland Review)
(great read!) OK. I just spent about an hour reading all of the reviews of this book. While I agree that it isn't the best Kurland has written, it is still a GREAT read.
For those complaints about not being like Diana Gabaldon, who is?!? She is one of the best authors out there. She is also a historian, unlike Lynn Kurland. It is Amazon or other sites that say you MAY (note they don't say you WILL) like this if you like that.
For those complaints about a lack of sex, go to the erotic selections and avoid Lynn Kurland. Her best asset is being able to tell a story without 3 consecutive chapters of sex. If she were a Virginia Henley and she had as little sex as she does, I could understand the complaint. At least I can borrow this to my 16 year old niece without having to worry that she will read something she may not need to know yet.
Lynn Kurland has never said her stories are historically accurate - I am pretty sure this is why it is classified as romance/fiction. While I realize Diana Gabaldon is classified this way also, she makes note that she purposely wrote a lot of historic detail.
I absolutely LOVE how Lynn takes family characters and gives them their own stories. You have met them in previous books and now they have their own stories. These books are FUN, not full of historical fact or sex. A DANCE THROUGH TIME was as good as the first book in the series. I LOVED the story of James Macleod and Elizabeth Smith. I think the best part of the book for me was when Jamie came forward in time and his reaction to the Twentieth century. For me the book wasn't long enough. I would have loved to read MORE.
Kurland is fast becoming another of my favorite authors as I now want to read all her books in the series. I highly enjoy time travel fantasy books and, having loved Diana Gabaldon's book, "Outlander", I naturally gravitated to this one. Unfortunately, this book is no "Outlander". It is just a pretty silly tale that is sorely lacking on many levels.
In this book, our silly, insipid heroine, Elizabeth Smith, goes back in time from the late twentieth century to early fourteenth century Scotland, where she meets James McLeod, an oafish, but handsome, Scottish laird who lives in filthy squalor with his men in a remote castle keep. After a few skirmishes, these two people from totally different worlds fall in love as expected and proceed to have a number of adventures in both his and her time.
Unfortunately, the characters are one dimensional, and the plot is so contrived as to be totally unbelievable. The writing is pedestrian at best, with dialogue that is hackneyed and trite. Notwithstanding its limitations, those readers who enjoy time travel romance books may get a modicum of enjoyment from this novel. I, however, did not. Lynn Kurland is an amazing author! I really enjoy reading her novels. I love the time travelling and all the family connections. If you're wanting to read romance, I definately recommend her. Jamie's story was so great to read :o) A Dance Through Time (Time Passages Romance) just finished this book and have to say i loved it! i have read several of her time travel books and wish i had started with this one. loved the characters. good job lynn! Romance writer Elizabeth Smith falls asleep in Central Park, New York City, in 1996, only to awaken in fourteenth-century Scotland, where she finds herself in the arms of her dream man, powerful Scottish laird James MacLeod. "Come to me." The haunting voice of Scottish laird James McLeod summons writer Elizabeth Smith through time to 1311 Scotland. James forbids women at his keep. So he is rather surprised when Elizabeth is deposited in his care, though care isn't what he gives her when they first meet. Lynn Kurland excited readers with her memorable debut novel, Stardust of Yesterday, and her talents shine through again in this delightful time-travel tale of adventure and love. Love Spell
Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's review (super romantic fantasy) As a Mattaen Initiate, Karl is trained to be a great warrior. When he reached the village filled with superstitious peasants, he scorns the irrational villagers proclaiming they are murderers; while their leaders defend their actions by claiming a dragon demanded and expected a virginal sacrifices or else. He was not volunteering when they tied him to the rock as their virginal sacrifice. Unchained he could not defeat a dragon if they existed, but chained, he fears if true he is dead.
Elera Daughter of Shane kills the dragon and charges as her price, the virgin sacrifice for a night to do what she wants with him. Her virgin prize Karl wants to say no, but she entices him to crave her. When she steals a kiss, he can no longer adhere to his vow of chastity as the Mattaen Initiate Brotherhood requires. She takes him and he wants her to take him again as he desires more, but by doing so he feels guilt for betraying his Brothers who raised him.
The key to this romantic fantasy is the world of Kane seems real especially the paranormal. The story line is fast-paced form the onset when a mocking Karl becomes the sacrifice and never slows until the final spin though in between there are world building, romance and plenty of action. Tammy Kane breathes new fire into the dragon mythos with a strong opening act.

(My first and best Howard)
(Tops my "Read Again!" List)
(A Rip Off About Rape)
(Couldn't Put it Down) I became somewhat addicted to Linda Howard after Cry No More and have read some of her other books - some great, some not so great. I kept seeing references to Son of the Morning by reveiwers and at first I wasn't sure about it. But here I am, just now reading it, 10 years after it was written! I'm so glad I did because I couldn't put it down. There are some holes in the plot but it was compelling enough that I could look beyond them. I enjoyed the characters so much and the writing was great. Plus, I'm a total Scotland fanatic so that added an extra element for me. Overall, this book is a classic and I hope it doesn't drop out of publication any time soon. I was more a historical romance fan so I guess that's the reason I was late to discover Linda Howard. Well Son of the Morning is the best introduction to this writer I can think of. Combining contemporary with historical romance this book is simply awesome. Just be sure to start early in the morning because it will be hard to go to sleep without having finished it. The story is about Grace, a scholar who stambles upon some old documents that relate to the Knights of the Templar. Unfortunately, soon after she finds these papers her father and husband are getting killed, she goes on the run because she's considered guilty for their deaths and she starts to see images of a large, handsome warrior named Niall. More than half the novel is spent with Grace in the present trying to find what the documents she found mean while her bond with Niall gets stronger and stronger. Despite their not being physically close for so long, Son of the Morning is one of the most soul touching, addictive and simply wonderful novels you'll ever read. The mystery plot adds to the tension and excitement, but it's a romance novel foremost. Absolutely brilliant, one of the best I've read and I've read A LOT! Of the thousands of books I've read in my life, this book is at the top of my romance "read again" list. This is the most fun, adventurous, sad, thrilling, entertaining, romantic and intriquing story that Linda Howard has ever written. Grace St. John is a woman you'll never forget... a female character with dimension and depth. You'll cry, you'll laugh, you'll worry, you'll rejoice. Your life will fade in the background as Grace takes center stage and her story becomes your reality. It's obvious that Niall is no slouch. He'd have to be pretty great to draw and keep a woman like Grace St. John! Enjoy! This is a direct and unmistakeable imitation of the far superior "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon. For that alone, it deserves the lowest rating. But the romance between the protagonists is quite disturbing. Their first sexual encounter is one in which the heroine, Grace St. John, is fully expecting to be killed by the hero, Black Niall. While she waits for a fatal sword stab, Niall gets her on her knees and rapes her. I'm sure others will quibble about the term, but when the woman is literally expecting to be gutted and is forcefully put into a position for penetration without her consent, it is rape. Forced climax does NOT absolve it of that term, any more than it would for a man. Suffice it to say, I did not think this book was good. I won't rehash the plot since others have done that quite well. This story reeled me in from the very beginning. Of all the Linda Howard that I've read, and I've read a lot, this was the novel in which I became most attached to the heroine. I loved that Linda really let us get to know Grace, experience her pain, feel her strength and witness the amazing changes that she went through. I cried more than once for her.
The physical romance comes much later in the story but I was not bothered by that AT ALL. The lead up to Grace and Black Nial's first encounter was quite enchanting!
A scholar specializing in ancient manuscripts, Grace St. John never imagined that a cache of fragile, old documents she discovered was the missing link to a lost Celtic treasure. But as soon as she deciphers the intriguing legend of the Knights of the Templar -- long fabled to hold the key to unlimited power -- Grace becomes the target of a ruthless killer bent on abusing the coveted force. Determined to stop him, Grace needs the help of a celebrated warrior bound by duty to uphold the Templar's secret for all eternity. But to find him -- and to save herself -- she must go back in time. Summoning the magic of an arcane ritual, Grace steps back to the barren hills of 14th-century Scotland, enduring the perils of an untamed land to confront Black Niall, a fierce man of dark fury and raw, unbridled desire. Driven by a mix of fear and passion, Grace enlists this brazen knight to join her in a modern-day search for a killer. In their quest to protect a timeless secret, they uncover a love for all time -- and a deadly duel of honor that risks everything they have. All of Linda Howard's novels are wonderful but this exceptional time-travel is her first foray into paranormal romance--and it's not to be missed. Grace St. John, a scholar, unwittingly discovers the Knights of Templar's secret treasure. Suddenly, her life is upturned when she spies her boss murdering her husband and brother. With no reason to live, except to extract vengeance, Grace becomes a fugitive of the law as she attempts to find an explanation for this horrible act. Grace simultaneously translates 14th century medieval documents written by Black Niall. This embittered knight reaches into Grace's subconscious and the two begin to share dreams 700 years apart. (Surprised!)
(Wow! I was blown away)
(Highlander's Challenge- A Joyfully Recommended Title) Jo Barrett is a fantastic author! I was thoroughly engrossed in an enchanting adventure from start to finish! Highlander's Challenge is a heart warming tale of time travel from modern day to 16th century Scotland where an independent woman finds love and a new life in a not so familiar setting. Great read with a slight cliffhanger that ends with the sequel Rogue's Challenge (which I also loved!). I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I bought this book because it was suggested to me by a friend. It was great. I couldnt put the book down. I am going to order the 2nd book which is Rogue's Challenge. I hope there will be more that follow it. I just finished reading it. And wow! This story was amazing. Since this isn't on your bookshelves at the bookstore, I was skeptical to spending $12.00 for an unheard of book. But the description and the review convinced me to give it a chance and I'm so glad I did.
Amelia Tucker, or Tuck as she liked to be called, is bodyguard for hire. Currently, she was hired to protect Jenny, a rich prodigy, who's traveling through Scotland. While there, after a botched kidnapping attempt, Amelia finds herself somehow back in time. There she ends up helping Colin MacLean and his friend, Ian Southerland.
I absolutely adore Amelia. I always wanted to a read a time travel romance where the woman had fighting skills and smarts and this definitely exceeded my expectations. Amelia was witty, intelligent and daring. She had I-don't-care-what-you-think attitude. But there was soft side to her that made sure to remind you she was still a woman. Colin MacLean is your typical Scotsman, who finds himself falling in love with this strange woman. He had a tough exterior but had a soft spot for Amelia and his family. They really complement one another.
This story was amazingly written well. There wasn't a lot of useless prose. There was a lot of intrigue and romance. This story will keep a smile on your face. So, if you're looking for a good time-travel romance, you definitely have to read this.
Rogue's Challenge is the sequel. Amelia Tucker, Tuck she likes to go by, is on her latest body guard gig trying to keep her charge from getting kidnapped. It doesn't help that her charge, Jenny, has taken them to Scotland where Amelia's guard must always be up around all the tourists. One particular man has her senses on high alert.
As Jenny distracts Tuck from watching the man, he sneaks up and attacks Jenny sending Amelia splashing into the fountain and hitting her head. When Tuck opens her eyes she's not in the twenty first century anymore. Somehow she's back in the sixteenth century finding out that men expect her to obey their every command. Tuck is not the type to obey anyone and Colin Maclean, the handsome laird in her way finds that out the hard way.
Highlander's Challenge will blow you away. This magical, mystical, sensual story will capture your attention and not let go. Amelia is a lovable character that is strong and intelligent. The struggle to stay with Colin will grab your heart and not let go. Amelia and Colin felt so alive I feared they would walk off the pages. If you love brawny highlanders and tough heroines Highlander's Challenge can not be missed! Jo Barrett is an author now on my auto buy list!
Klarissa reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed Amelia Tucker, or Tuck as she prefers to be called, latest personal bodyguard assignment turns into one she'll never forget, thanks to a crazed kidnapper, one enchanted fountain, and a sixteenth century Highland Warrior determined to keep her under lock and key.
