Hold On to Your Dreamsis the first biography of the musician and composer Arthur Russell, one of the most important but least known contributors to the downtown New York music scene during the 1970s and 1980s. With the exception of a few dance recordings, including "Is It All Over My Face?" and "Go Bang! #5," Russell's pioneering music was largely forgotten until the issue of two albums in 2004 triggered a revival of interest, which gained momentum with the release of additional albums and the documentary filmWild Combination. Based on interviews with more than seventy of his collaborators, family members, and friends,Hold On to Your Dreamsprovides vital new information about this singular, eccentric musician and his role in the boundary-breaking downtown music scene.

Tim Lawrence traces Russell's odyssey from his hometown of Oskaloosa, Iowa, to countercultural San Francisco, and eventually to New York, where he lived from 1973 until his death from AIDS-related complications in 1992. Refusing definition while dreaming of commercial success, Russell wrote and performed new wave and disco as well as quirky rock, twisted folk, voice-cello dub, and hip-hop inflected pop. "He was way ahead of other people in understanding that the walls between concert music and popular music and avant-garde music were illusory," comments the composer Philip Glass. "He lived in a world in which those walls weren't there." Lawrence follows Russell across musical genres and through such vital downtown music spaces as the Kitchen, the Loft, the Gallery, the Paradise Garage, and the Experimental Intermedia Foundation. Along the way, he captures Russell's openness to sound, his commitment to collaboration, and his uncompromising idealism.』

(A SPLENDID COLLECTION)
『Once again, Bram hits the mark. A wonderful journey into the head and heart of one of today's best writers. His immersion and observations prove to be a true odyssey through the gay culture of the last thirty years. Highly recommended.』

(Poetic Essays by a Literary Master)
『Christopher Bram is such a gifted story teller that it would stand to reason that his ramblings about his own life and about such varied topics as Henry James, adolescent problems of deciding sexuality, the effect of AIDS on literature, gossip novels, etc. would be rich in anecdotes and humor and philosophy. But even appreciation of his depth of literary skills does not provide the reader of MAPPING THE TERRITORY with an adequate clue as to just how fine Bram writes essays such as these.

Much of the book falls into the autobiographical zone: 'Slow Learners' is an extended 'novella' of Bram's highschool, college, and grad school days as they molded his preference for friends in general and life partners in particular - an at times hilarious tale and at times tender and supportive guide to figuring out life as a young man. He also offers a rich essay on the books that influenced his own writing, books he reviews for the reader in a way that few other reviewers can. He shares his views of life in the Village in New York, revisits Larry Kramer's notorious novel 'Faggots', and delves into Oscar Wilde with a penchant for wit and concrete criticism.

Woven throughout this endlessly entertaining book is Christopher Bram's elegant use of the English language. Reading this collection adds to his stature as one of America's finest writers. And he seems like a guy you'd like to have over to dinner! Communication, elucidation, and warmth suffuse these pages as only Christopher Bram could write. Grady Harp, October 09』

『Bram, Christopher. "Mapping the Territory: Selected Nonfiction", Alyson Books, 2009.

A Collection

Amos Lassen

Christopher Bram is primarily known as a novelist and an excellent one at that. You may known him as the man who wrote "Gods and Monsters" and "Exiles in America" among others. In this book, however, we see Bram as an essayist and when taken all together we get a look at Bram, the person. Here he writes about topics such as coming out, his friends, film, gay literature and Henry James. He tells us why he and his partner will not get married and he gives great insight into Christopher Bram, the man. He also takes us to the gay ghetto of Greenwich Village and gives us a good look at gay life from the inside.
His writing is stylish and graceful and I found myself pulled in immediately. As a literary person I was quite interested in the books he read and how they influenced him and his being a literary person, he wrote just about that. We are lucky to have an author like him writing for us.

Novelist Christopher Bram has been writing essays for twenty-five years.Mapping the Territory, his first collection of nonfiction, ranges through such topics as the power of gay fiction, coming out in the 1970s in Virginia, low-budget filmmaking with friends in New York, and the sexual imagination of Henry James. He describes the heady experience of seeing his novelGods and Monstersmade into an Oscar-winning movie starring Ian McKellen, Brendan Fraser, and Lynn Redgrave; and he discusses why he and his partner of thirty years don't want to get married. Bram looks both into and out of himself in these essays. He revisits the titles he read while finding himself as a gay man, and he also shows us Greenwich Village as seen from his front stoop. The book is not simply a collection of short pieces—it's an autobiography of ideas from one of today’s most lively and popular novelists.

Christopher Bramis the author of nine novels, includingThe Notorious Dr. August,Lives of the Circus Animals, andExiles in America. His fifth novel,Gods and Monsters, was made into the Oscar-winning movie. He grew up in Virginia where he was a paperboy and Eagle Scout and attended the College of William and Mary. He was a Guggenheim Fellow and winner of the Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement. He lives in New York.

(Good plot and well written)
『Joe Peterson is Deputy Sheriff, Garland, Utah; and it being Utah it is no surprise to learn that he is a Mormon, but with a difference, for he is gay. When Kabe, a cute dark-skinned young guy with attitude and a criminal record arrives on his patch he is immediately attracted. But such an attraction can lead only to trouble, trouble for Joe and his position as Deputy Sheriff, and trouble for his standing with his church.

When Kabe raises the alarm that a women has fallen to her death in the National Park, Joe enlists Kabe's help, taking advantage the lad's rock climbing skills, in retrieving the body, and in the subsequent investigation into the death. In the process the attraction between to two men leads to action, which in turn means a lot of trouble for Joe.

The story is narrated by Joe, and told in his local Utah voice; it take only a page or two to adjust to. Hard fall is well written, with a good plot and interesting and diverse well formed characters, including Joe and Kabe; Nadia, a sympathetic NPs law enforcement ranger; along with some rather more bigoted members of the community. This may be classed as gay erotica, but it is a touching story of the relationship and trust between two men that is well able to stand without the graphic details of their intimacy.』

(Terrible book)
『I will not read anymore books by this author. Not a good read. Extremely predictable, formula type book.』

(It's not the fall that kills you, it's the abrupt stop...)
『Don't get me wrong, this book is a great read (as an e-book read on an iPhone), but there are some editing problems. If the German "turon" prized her photography, as she allegedly did, she would have had an "SLR" camera, with an SD card, not a "SIM card" (found in a cellphone) and she would not likely photograph a sunset with the date imprint turned on. (The digital file would have been dated, however.) Kabe's eyes go from green to hazel and back again from page to page. (Hazel eyes, like the hazelnut, are usually described as "light-brown and gold.") Casting the editing side, the character development is excellent, though referring to Kabe as a "city boy" if he can climb well enough to perch like a frog upside down on the underside of a boulder is a bit much. You don't learn that by climbing climbing walls in a gym!

The religious aspect reminded me of Robin Reardon's Thinking Straight. but the Mormon/LDS twist on sex is as dogmatic as any: no sex (NONE) outside of marriage. And Joe is a believer right down to his special underwear. After the film Latter Days -- written and directed by a former LDS -- I thought it would be hard to surprise me with additional Mormon facts, but Ms. Buchanan has many. And the climbing jargon sounds like it comes from a pro. Certainly worth the price of the download!』

(Truly sympathetic characters)
『The two heroes in James Buchanan's 'Hard Fall' couldn't be more different--or better drawn. Using a first person narrative from Joe Peterson's point of view, we get to see a man who is simple, direct, smart, and deeply faithful, in spite of the fact that the rules of his religion would reject him for his most human attribute: his sexuality. Joe is fully out to himself--but he lives in a tiny town surrounded by a world of lonely and he is fully cognizant of what will happen should his secret be exposed.

Enter Kabe Varghese-- an ex-con with a smart mouth (much to Joe's horror) and a deeply betrayed trust. Kabe doesn't believe in anything--until he realizes that Joe is as tough, solid, and beautiful as the open cliffs they both love to climb.

I loved this book. I grew up in a town that was mostly Mormon--I recognized the mindset and I recognized the crisis that Joe underwent whenever he tried to fit his own person into the faith he loved. Although I am not Mormon myself, I was impressed with the respect that the author showed to the faith--Joe rightly blamed his difficulties not on the church, but on small minded people who might be found in ANY church, and who, in this case, had the power to turn a personal prejudice into a religious one.

Beyond that, I thoroughly enjoyed Joe's and Kabe's interactions. Joe has an open mind and an open heart--but he lets nobody push him around. Kabe is almost entirely closed--the one thing they share, at the beginning, is a love of God's country and of rock climbing. The two of them take this one beginning, and dig a toehold into a relationship with it. And then they attempt to scale the whole mountain. The fact that the ending was hopeful, but not fairytale, only added to the charm and the authenticity I found in Joe's plain country voice. I truly enjoyed spending time with Joe Peterson, and after only a few pages, I figured I'd probably like anybody he was drawn to. Turns out, I was right.』

(Love, tolerance, religion)
『Hard Fall by James Buchanan is a story about a man who is struggling to reconcile his religion and his community with his sexuality and the love he has for another man. It blends physical action and personal introspection into an appealing package that is fast-paced and original. Not only has Ms. Buchanan set her novel in some of the most beautiful landscape in the country - the spectacular red rock canyons of southern Utah - but she also has made her main character a member of the LDS church. I am not all that familiar with the customs of the Mormon Church, but I do know that the LDS church supported Proposition 8 banning same sex marriage in California, so I assume that it holds the same negative attitude towards homosexuality as many religions do.

Joe Peterson is a strong and multidimensional character that readers will find very appealing. He has a distinctive and revealing voice that runs through the story, which is told by him in the first person. His identity is as a part of the mountains that surround him, he relates to them on a visceral level, and his religion is part of his very soul. There is a scene in this book where the Bishop is giving Joe what he calls a "righteous talking to" about his sexuality. Joe reveals how much he has struggled to come to terms with who he is and proves himself to be not only strong of will but also strong of character. Because this man not only has to defend himself against the church, he must also defend his personal views of religion against others who may judge him.

For all that he is Joe's obsession and love interest, Kabe is a secondary character in Hard Fall. He acts as Joe's foil, and his presence can be summed up in this one observation by Joe: "I had faith that Kabe wouldn't let me fall." Kabe might be a wild city kid, but he engenders trust in Joe, and it is this trust rather than the physical attraction between the two that eventually turns into love.

The narration in this novel flows smoothly and easily, making reading it a pleasurable experience. Add to that a distinct and well-developed cast of characters, scenery that will knock your socks off (enter Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park into Google and prepare to be stunned), and a story that will make you think about love and religion and tolerance, and you have a novel that is very enjoyable and well worth the read.

『Deputy Joe Peterson is Mormon and in the closet. Then ex-con Kabe Varghese lands in town on parole. When a tourist falls off the mountain, Joe finds he needs the help of this cliff climbing adrenaline junky to solve the case. Will Kabe tear him apart or does Joe need to fall hard before he can start living?』

(nice story but too flowery)
『I decided to read the book before watching the film. I was impressed and I wasn't...While Grimsley sets a wonderful narrative and tells a great love story without packing any implausible or Hollywood plot devices, I have to wonder if writers in this genre always feel there's a need for tragedy in these types of stories...I loved the pacing and the quiet narrative, but really, does flowery prose really equate to great writing? I recommend the book, but the text is overly descriptive bordering on clichéd. I preferred the story and how well nuanced the characters were, much more than the actual writing. (I would like to give it 3 1/2 stars but that doesn't seem an option here.)』

(Hope in a grim world?)
『Nathan and his mother and father are new arrivals in Potter's Lake, a small rural town somewhere in the South of the U.S. Nathan's family rent an old farmhouse, which is in sight of the new house, occupied by the landlord Connelly family. From his bedroom window Nathan can see Roy's room in the new house. Nathan is a sophomore and Roy is a senior. Roy drives the school bus on which Nathan rides every weekday, but other than that the two seems far apart. Still Nathan watches Roy, intrigued by him, admiring his older strength, self-confidence and charm Soon Roy notices Nathan and the two strike up an unconventional friendship. Nathan is an unusually intelligent boy, ahead of his year in some subjects, and Roy enlists him to help write an English essay. In return Roy proposes to teach Nathan algebra. To Nathan's surprise Roy seeks physical contact with his young neighbor. Nathan happily responds. A new romance is formed but can the relationship withstand the unusually strong pressures that will emerge from family and peers?

This is a book about the joys and hesitations of first love, but more importantly it is about the huge handicap that family and peers can be in the development of individuality. The theme of homophobia is very prominent, as is the topics of child abuse (in its various forms). The Christian religion is also explored, mostly in a negative sense, although Grimsley is partially ambiguous on this point.

This is a very dark novel, indeed it was at first considered to bleak to publish. The writing is highly emotional and Grimsley mostly succeeds admirably in riveting his reader's attention, catching them up in the poignant drama. The text moves from relaxed happiness to the electrically erotic to ominously threatening to brutally violent. Grimsley orchestrates each emotion with expert skill. The exploration of the `haunted house' is a little cliché, and at that point the interest lags, but then Grimsley suddenly belts us with a piece of excellent writing to end the incident.

Both Nathan and Roy grow as characters throughout the story, and indeed the whole book is partially a tale of self-discovery and the resulting increase in self-assurance. Nathan's drunken, Bible-reading father and timid, distant mother stand out as excellent and memorable personality studies, although both these characters remain static, hopelessly caught in their individual snares.

The title of this book rather satirically calls up notions of Mills and Boon love stories, in which the world is seen through rose-colored glasses. The novel is of course quite the reverse. Some critics (Wikipedia) believe that the title refers to the DC comic character of the same name, who can preconceive the future briefly before it happens. Nathan experiences moments of déjà vu. More subtly Roy is referred to as he threatens to evaporate out of Nathan's life like some hazy mirage. Also there is the long, dazed, final sequence of the novel.

This novel won the American Library Association's Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual Book Award for fiction. It is an excellent read. It has much to offer all readers, including the mainstream heterosexual audience. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time.

(Totally Captivating)
『It is such a refreshing book. I am so glad I read - again&again. It made me bawl my eyes out the 1st time I read. Despite the tragic ending - this is still a book that every romantic at heart should read.』

(If There Was Only One Book I Could Read For A Lifetime...)
『... This book would definitely be it! I read this book in less than four hours in the middle of the nite, I had school the next day and I could NOT put it down! The love story between Nathan and Roy, is simple, heartbreaking and beautiful all at the same time! Roy's reluctance to admit his love for Nathan, and Nathan's bravery at letting this young man into his heart is so real and true, that I was in tears more than once during this book. Nathan's backstory alone is enough to fill an entire other book! It is neever really said what went on between Nathan and his father, but you can feel Nathan's fear... and when the book comes to it's violent end... your heart breaks, but the true end, the picture of these two boys casting aside everyone else aside just for the chance to love.... I applaud you Mr. Grimsley for this amazingly beautiful story, Thank You!』

(One of the best)
『A haunting, astonishing piece of fiction. The author's background as a playwright shows in the nonstop present-tense narration, which would be clunky and annoying in less-skillful hands. But Grimsley can write circles around most other writers, and the technique actually works to great effect. This is not only one of the best gay-themed American novels; it is one of the best American novels.』
『Struggling with sexual abuse from his father and his mother's denial of the situation, Roy dreams of a life free from his family while fantasizing about a relationship with the young man next door, whose home represents a safe haven to Roy. 25,000 first printing.』

(I Say A Little Prayer - E Lynn Harris)
『As a big fan of E. Lynn Harris, "I Say A Little Prayer" is entertaining and enjoyable as I had expected. A great read.』

(I love e Lynn)
『I read this book a couple weeks ago and it is still frsh in my mind. Chauncy greer was a powerful character and I loved the flow of this book. E lynn has a special way of Captivating his redaers and I am going to order Basketball jones next to see what he has up his sleeve. Great read i wish I could give this man more than 5 stars.』

(Just Okay For Me)
『Of course the book was well written, I wish I had Mr. Harris's editor for my books, because it is so perfect to me, or as perfect as something can get. I gave the story four stars just because I couldn't relate to the characters like I normally do, and it started kind of slow. However, as I got into the book, it became the page turner that I am use to from this author, who is my favorite and is the reigning King in his genre. I am the author of My Eyes Are Green and I hoping that his readers check my book out as well. Loved Loved Loved the entreprenurial spirit of the main charachter, sounded very real and believable. This is exactly why I love comtemporary african-american fiction because you tend to get something out of it and be able to apply it to your life.』

(Mr. Harris, you have won me over with this one.)
『E. Lynn Harris, I Say a Little Prayer (Doubleday, 2006)

I wasn't quite understanding all the flap surrounding this book until very recently, when an African-American friend of mine who lives in California expressed outrage at the fact that Proposition 8 (the anti-gay-marriage proposition) was passed largely because, according to polls, seventy percent of the state's black voters turned out in support of it. Suddenly things got a lot clearer where I Say a Little Prayer is concerned, and I understand a lot more of the reason Harris felt compelled to write this novel. Like many others, I have to say I'm glad he did. This is quite a good little book, even if it does gets tangled up in its own message now and again.

The story focuses on Chauncey Greer, a bisexual black man who's decided that women are more trouble than they're worth, and so has decided to just date men. Problem is, he's got a bad relationship skeleton in the closet, and so these days his life, while successful on the outside, is littered with a string of unsatisfying relationships. Everything goes to hell when that old flame, Sweet D, arrives in town in order to recruit Chauncey to sing at a tent revival. Which is nothing too terrible--Chauncey and D were originally members of the same boy band--until Chauncey realizes that the minister holding the revival whips his members into a frenzy with his strong anti-gay agenda, and that D seems to be part and parcel of the anti-gay package. Clearly, there's a lot more going on under the hood than Chauncey had originally realized. In order to try and fight back against this hatred, Chauncey, in turn, tries to whip up his own congregation, but finds resistance there as well. What's a gay man--and a religious one, to boot--to do?

While Harris is pretty obviously on the outside of all this looking in, he refuses to give in to stereotypes most of the time, and draws his characters with sensitivity, be they gay, bi, or straight, and his plot is compelling enough that he could well just sit back and let the novel write itself, given the strong characterization. Unfortunately, he wants to dabble a time or two in speechifying, but that is little reason not to enjoy the rest of this novel. Homophobes will obviously have a problem with it, but recommended for everyone who actually has a shred of a brain. ***½

(You Go Boy!)
『Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. It had more twists and turns than a roller coaster. I was rooting for Chauncey especially after he found out that the man who took his virginity with men was a homophobic nut case. Grayson was truly a scary character. I found myself wanting Chauncey to slap her as hard as he could. I think this book makes a really interesting point. It seems that those who speak out the loudest against homosexuality are usually closeted homosexuals who hate who they are(Donnie McClurkin). I was happy Chauncey came out on top in the end. I was also surprised that Basil made an appearance in this book. I hope to see more of Chauncey in the future. This book is a great buy and I highly recommend it to all.』
AUSA Today, New York Times, Washington PostBestseller

Chauncey Greer, the suave and successful owner of the Cute Boy Greeting Card Company, never wants for the attention of guys just as hot as he is. After a couple of bad dates Chauncey finds himself in church, where the minister’s message inspires him to return to the singing career he had launched as a teenager. Things heat up when Chauncey’s rediscovered singing talent lands him in the middle of a protest over homophobia in the black church, and Chauncey’s old singing partner–and former lover–makes a dramatic and unexpected entrance.』

(Important Contribution to Women's Rights)

In "Muslim Women Reformers," author Ida Lichter has adopted a meticulous research approach in her anthology of activists.
I like the way this book is divided, making it easy to find activists in any of the twenty seven countries listed in alphabetical order. The glossary at the back is also very useful.

Human rights issues are universal and these Muslim women are given recognition for speaking out against gender oppressions that would be considered punishable criminal offences in the West.

Giving them the attention they deserve and helping them achieve equal gender rights in education, health care and legislation, may eventually bring their suffering to an end.

(A must read for those looking into the future)
『Muslim Women Reformers: Inspiring Voices Against Oppression

I recommend that all who recognize the probability of half the world's population being Muslim in the next 25 years read "Muslim Women Reformers: Inspiring Voices Agains Oppression" by Dr. Ida Lichter.

It is generally accepted that a positive attitudinal change is only possible and will only occur in the whole of the Muslim population if girls and women are educated. However, as this book so clearly describes, there are major political, cultural and economic issues which will have to be overcome to enable the changes required to lessen the risk of global chaos.

The book is instructive as to the severity of the problems being addressed by a few dedicated and very brave women. These remarkable women, mostly unknown in the developed societies, have suffered greatly and risked even worse punishment by a seemingly intransigent, male dominated, political and social structure.

Dr. Lichter does us all a service by so well highlighting the history and activities of those few women who are sacrificing themselves in the hope of making a positive difference. It is only through the education and empowerment of Muslim women that there is any real hope of cultural rationalization and conflict avoidance.

The unbelievably brave women profiled in this book should be recognized and supported, as they are the only hope for a civilizing of Islamic traditional practices, still widely prevalent.

Arthur Lipper
Del Mar, CA

(Amazingly well-researched&eye-opening biographies)
『This book opened my eyes to the sad, ongoing, sometimes painful struggles of Muslim women around the world against distorted teachings. Lichter researches very thoroughly the biographies of brave Muslim women activists worldwide struggling for justice, human rights, education, and healthcare for their female compatriots. There are literally hundreds of such women, many of whose lives are threatened, with different challenges unique to their communities. Lichter's voluminous work is impressive. She includes, without discrimination, all activists - from those whom are deeply practicing to those whom have denounced Islam, yet continue to concern themselves with lives of Muslim women. Her voice is fair, neither commendatory towards Islam nor feminist, and she often cites the true teachings of Islam as well as their distorted practice.』

(Deserves the absolute highest recommendation)
『Muslim Women Reformers: Inspiring Voices Against Oppression is a scholarly yet heart-rending anthology of portraits of Muslim women who dare to speak out against discrimination and violence perpetrated against women in Islamic communities in nations all over the globe, from Afghanistan to Bangladesh, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Pakistan, and many more - even some Muslim communities in more western or modern nations such as France or Egypt. "Background" sections briefly summarize the severity of each nation's local religious policies where women are concerned; in extreme cases are incidents of "honor killings", where women are murdered by male relatives - allegedly for bringing dishonor to the family, but in practice often for the slightest ill rumor, or even as a cold-blooded means to steal an inheritance. The women who dare to speak out and take action in "Muslim Women Reformers" risk slander, attack, or even murder for daring to take a stand; yet even as they struggle against an entrenched, misogynist, theocratic power base, they hold out hope for a better tomorrow. Muslim Women Reformers deserves the absolute highest recommendation, and a place on both public and college library women's studies shelves.

"We are dealing with an influential fundamentalist international that has a clear strategy. In order to secure women's rights, we need a democratic international of women otherwise we have absolutely no chance of conquering this beast. Not only Algerian, but Sudanese, Iranian, and Afghani women know what I am talking about. They know the horror of God's State all too well. But alone, without your support, without the women's and human rights movement of the countries of the West, we are losing this battle of life and death."

-Khalida Messaoudi, Algeria

In a world where the strident demands of Islamic extremists capture the media's attention, the courageous protests of Muslim reformers barely receive any notice. These include a surprising number of women who are prepared to challenge institutionalized persecution, risking derision, arrest, physical harm, and even death.

In this inspiring compilation of Muslim women's stories from around the world, the voices of these long-oppressed women ring loud and clear as they question ideology and culture, patriarchal and religious beliefs, and demand the social and political rights women lack in many Muslim countries. The reformers speak out with passion, humanity, and sometimes humor in these compact and often poignant biographies, bringing alive the harsh realities for women in many parts of the world.

By surveying a wide range of Muslim reformers, not only in the Middle East but also in Europe and North America, author Ida Lichter uncovers some significant emerging trends. For example, she notes that the majority of Muslim feminists would like to see reform contained within Islam. Many criticize their patriarchal culture for suppressing egalitarian views that they believe the Koran expresses and so they advocate a reinterpretation of the holy text. Some demand changes to discriminatory Sharia-based laws. Others campaign openly for political and educational reforms.

Complete with a glossary and a list of helpful Web sites, this vibrant anthology makes use of reliable translations from original languages to demonstrate the groundswell of grassroots change that promises eventually to bring even the most conservative sectors of Islam into the twenty-first century.』

This comprehensive and authoritative collection of Oscar Wilde's American interviews affords readers a fresh look at the making of a literary legend. Better known in 1882 as a cultural icon than a serious writer (at twenty-six years old, he had by then published just one volume of poems), Wilde was brought to North America for a major lecture tour on Aestheticism and the decorative arts that was organized to publicize a touring opera, Gilbert and Sullivan'sPatience, which lampooned him and satirized the Aesthetic "movement" he had been imported to represent.

In this year-long series of broadly distributed and eagerly read newspaper interviews, Wilde excelled as a master of self-promotion. He visited major cities from New York to San Francisco but also small railroad towns along the way, granting interviews to newspapers wherever asked. With characteristic aplomb, he adopted the role as the ambassador of Aestheticism, and reporters noted that he was dressed for the part. He wooed and flattered his hosts everywhere, pronouncing Miss Alsatia Allen of Montgomery, Alabama, the most beautiful young lady he had seen in the United States, adding, "This is a remark, my dear fellow, I supposed I have made of some lady in every city I have visited in this country. It could be appropriately made. American women are very beautiful."

Confronted at every turn by an insatiable audience of sometimes hostile interviewers, the young poet tried out a number of phrases, ideas, and strategies that ultimately made him famous as a novelist and playwright. Seeing America and Americans for the first time, Wilde's perception often proved as sharp as his wit; the echoes of both resound in much of his later writings. His interviewers also succeeded in getting him to talk about many other topics, from his opinions of British and American writers (he thought Poe was America's greatest poet) to his views of Mormonism. This exceptional volume cites all ninety-one of Wilde's interviews and contains transcripts of forty-eight of them, and it also includes his lecture on his travels in America.

(What kind of Blackwood fan are you?)
『Whether you enjoy this work may depend on which Blackwood genre you prefer: ghost story or nature fiction. If you prefer the latter, you may find this book a gem. If not, you may find it lugubrious, as I do.』

(By Far The Biggest Influence In My Life...Was Nature)
『Algernon Blackwood, the great British master of the short horror story and member of the Order of the Golden Dawn, published The Centaur to great acclaim in 1911. Unlike the American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, who championed Blackwood's work throughout his lifetime, Blackwood loved, admired, and respected nature: Blackwood was a romantic who enjoyed a mystical faith and philosophy concerning the natural world, a faith which is reflected in almost all of his stories. In his tales, trees and men fall in love with one another, fairies happily guide, misguide, or torment intrusive travelers, and other - dimensional creatures storm earth through gaps in reality or plunge down on hunters from the heavens. Even Blackwood's ghost stories typically suggest some mysterious law connecting the return of the dead with natural but little understood processes. Few writers other than Arthur Machen could portray 'daimonic reality' as well and as believably as Blackwood. But while The Centaur broadly addresses the supernatural, it is in no way a horror tale.

When traveler O'Malley encounters an unusually robust, handsome, and virile man and his equally attractive young son while on a cruise, he becomes strangely enraptured, and is thrilled to learn that the two will be sharing his cabin for the duration of the voyage. O'Malley also notices that when observing the two men from a distance, they seem to oddly amalgamate into one larger being, or, at other times, an immense third presence seems to accompany them. Is it a trick of the light? Is O'Malley a lunatic, hallucinating, or experiencing repressed homosexual desire without realization? Since both father and son rarely speak and communicate largely with their charismatic smiles, pie - eyed O'Malley makes of them what he can and takes them in with his eyes a little more than seems respectable for a presumably heterosexual male: at night, O'Malley goes so far as to pull back the curtains and stare at their undressed bodies while they sleep. In one loaded episode, the father awakens to find O'Malley bending over him and devouring him with his eyes; unperturbed, the father sits up, points to the son, and together they stare at the son's naked chest beautifully rising and falling as the morning light comes up. Since everything suggests that O'Malley is erotically attracted to both men, and the father in some way enamored with his son, their cabin seems more like a blissful, somewhat humid den of unthwarted pedophilia and incest than the place of revelation and miracles Blackwood would like to have the reader believe it is.

Also along for the voyage is the learned Dr. Stahl, who inexplicably has a great understanding of the two strangers and what they threaten. Blackwood allows himself almost a hundred labored and repetitive pages attempting to convey to the reader the secret Dr. Stahl attempts to put into words for O'Malley. The father and the son, as it happens, are not men in the sense that Stahl and O'Malley are men, but are earth spirits, emanations of mother nature, and, as such, two of the last beings of their kind in existence. Blackwood never finds the words to define and describe the two men's metaphysical nature clearly, so Dr. Stahl and O'Malley repeat the same precious discussion over and over, merely approaching it from a slightly different angle each time.

As a struggling, often starving writer, Blackwood was frequently paid by the word, a fact that hasn't been forgotten by his critics. Many of his stories were indeed overwritten, though overwriting was something Blackwood raised almost to an art in many of his short pieces. Unfortunately, his novels, from A Prisoner In Fairyland to The Centaur, were another matter. Had The Centaur been a short story of twenty pages, Blackwood could have conveyed exactly the same information, if, as written, to an equally unconvincing effect. In trying to outline his beliefs about the spiritual aspects of nature, Blackwood abandoned structure entirely and seemed to forget that he was attempting a dramatic narrative. Readers can obtain a much better outline of Blackwood's pantheistic philosophy by reading his short stories than can ever be obtained by reading The Centaur, which is ultimately nothing but a vague, under confident, and winded New Age tract.

Blackwood's short masterpiece, "May Day Eve," concerns a hardheaded traveler's uncomfortable but apparently necessary encounter with the fairies, beautifully expressing everything that The Centaur attempts and fails to say. When the narrator, having suffered his illuminating but disorienting punishment in the wild, finally arrives at the friendly professor's door, the knowing professor shelters him briefly before tempting him with the knowledge that they have several hours of darkness yet to experience the miracles of the fairy world. Armed with the security his companion provides and a sudden new and courageous attitude about the possibilities inherent in reality, the narrator accepts the professor's invitation, and they disappear together into the night. He says, "And as we began to climb the hill together in silence I saw that the stars were clear overhead and that there was no mist, that the trees stood motionless without wind, and that beyond us on the summit of the hills there were lights dancing to and for, appearing and disappearing like the reflections of stars in water."』
『On a cruise through the Greek islands, a man encounters a handsome father and his son. He is strangely drawn to his his fellow travellers, and discovers with some elation that they will all share a cabin aboard ship.

Tricks of the light seem to join the pair into a single being when they walk ashore, and at times a third, much larger being appears to join them.

Is the protagonist hallucinating, or is he experiencing repressed homosexual desires? Or is something darker and more ancient at work? Blackwood weaves a poetic, erotically charged tale against the exotic backdrop of the Greek islands.』

(Perfect Book for All the (Formerly) High-Powered Moms on Your Block!)
『Do you feel crazy to have left your high-powered career once you had kids? This book helps explain why it felt necessary and lets you know that you're definitely not alone. I was nodding my head on every page as the authors discussed the challenge of finding high quality childcare and the guilt of insufficient "mama time". It was also thought provoking to consider the perils of divorce for stay-home moms who have limited their earnings power by getting off the fast track and the need for adequate disability and life insurance when your family's finances rely on just dad. Finally, the authors offer a few ideas about how to maintain your connections and skills so you can eventually re-enter the workforce and find that elusive work-family balance. This is a compelling book that I've recommended to all the moms in my playgroup and beyond. The book lets us know, we're in it together!』
『When significant numbers of college-educated American women began, in the early twenty-first century, to leave paid work to become stay-at-home mothers, an emotionally charged national debate erupted. Karine Moe and Dianna Shandy, a professional economist and an anthropologist, respectively, decided to step back from the sometimes overheated rhetoric around the so-called mommy wars. They wondered what really inspired women to opt out, and they wanted to gauge the phenomenon's genuine repercussions. Glass Ceilings and 100-Hour Couples is the fruit of their investigation--a rigorous, accessible, and sympathetic reckoning with this hot-button issue in contemporary life.

Drawing on hundreds of interviews from around the country, original survey research, and national labor force data, Moe and Shandy refocus the discussion of women who opt out from one where they are the object of scrutiny to one where their aspirations and struggles tell us about the far broader swath of American women who continue to juggle paid work and family. Moe and Shandy examine the many pressures that influence a woman's decision to resign, reduce, or reorient her career. These include the mismatch between child-care options and workplace demands, the fact that these women married men with demanding careers, the professionalization of stay-at-home motherhood, and broad failures in public policy. But Moe and Shandy are equally attentive to the resilience of women in the face of life decisions that might otherwise threaten their sense of self-worth. Moe and Shandy find, for instance, that women who have downsized their careers stress the value of social networks--of "running with a pack of smart women" who've also chosen to emphasize motherhood over paid work.』

(quick, steamy read)
『short on plot and character development, but loaded with plenty of hot scenes between the two main characters. once you start, you won't want to put the book down. you might not want to read this one in public.』

(Sexy...sexy...sexy!)
『I could not put this book down. Your imagination will run wild. I'm still thinking about it and it's been weeks since i read it!』

(Nice!)
『Though erotic, this book actually gets you thinking about people interaction, being judgmental, and values in relationships. The characters are genuine and you find yourself caring about them both and hoping for the relationship that develops to work out. Never judge a book by its cover is the lesson here, look deeper into a person than just what you see on the outside.

Very well done.』

(Poor porn story for you to read)
『If you want silly smut then this is the type of story for you. If you want a read that promotes the value of women and their relationships and problems in being who they really are then save your money for something better. After finishing this story I was sorry that the lift did not combust with both women in it!
Why is sex the be-all-and-end-all of a story? Perhaps because the writer can't think of anything else to write about. Imagine this fantasy: lesbians get good quality fiction to read that treats women as important people and not sexual objects.
Meghan O'Brien writes a crumby story that is little else that porn in this novel. This first part is the women trapped in the lift and the second part is a realisation of the women's sexual fantasies. O.K. they end up happy-ever-after but the reality is that we gwt to know nothing about them and their real life and the complexities of two women trying to live within a world, especially a corporate world that is still very slow to accept women as valued workers. I want something much better to read that this. Trash goes out once a week but a story like this makes trash of the troubles gay women have living in hostile environments and finding true relationships based on issues that are meaningful.』

(Porn Book)
『Where is the story?? This is basically a porn book. 98% of this book is sex. I skimmed almost half of the book because there was no interest. It's only about two lesbians meeting each other and having the sex of their life--it's a pretty dirty book. There is no "romance" in there, just lust. They tell each other their fantasies and act on it...they use dirty talk...everything just revolves around sex.

I bought this book on June 15th of 2008, and after the first few chapters I decided to stop reading. Now, one year and a month later, I decided to TRY to finish it. I ended up flipping the pages and skimming.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone...unless you want to have a porn book. I didn't know a software developer (the author) can have such a dirty mind.』
