(Could have been interesting but.....NO)

(Excellent Examination of the Complicated Decision to Stay Home)

(Not really applicable to us "normal folks")

(Good Read)

(Stories that grabbed my heart)
This books goes in circles - how many ways can you say the same thing over and over again. Could have been interesting if the research reached more horizons, but.....NO. This book came up short for me.
Pamela Stone's examination of the issues and complexities of making the decision to leave a career, or at least to take a multi year career break, is spot on. I was on maternity leave with my first child when my company collapsed, so I knew I wasn't returning to that job. But I did have to decide whether to start looking for another full time job. My husband and I weren't getting any younger and we wanted to have more kids so I ended up working in limited part time jobs for a few years and then took a complete career break when my fourth child was born. It was tough to watch my peers advance in their careers while mine was at a standstill. Ultimately I returned to work, first in a demanding full time job at an investment firm and then as the author of a book on career reentry and founder of a company focusing on career reentry programming. But it was a long journey and I could relate directly to experiences of the women profiled in Stone's book. Her voice is a critical one in the "opt out/opt in" discussion.
Although it seems that the author really did her homework, the bottom line is that the subjects in this book are super high earning and super high acheiving women married to even higher acheiving/earning husbands. The study itself is fascinating and I'm sure that many of the home "pull" and workplace "push" factors apply to women of all income, education, and racial/ethnic backgrounds but the bottom line is that these were women who could AFFORD to stay home seemingly without making any compromises in their lifestyles. I was more interested in learning about average/middle class families, with moms who ended up staying home even with great consequence to their socioeconomic status, as is the case with many moms who choose to stay at home. I mean, this book is talking about women married to high-powered Wall Street investment bankers, women who are CEO's and stockbrokers themselves...sorry, but these women could afford to stay home. What was so groundbreaking about that? "Feminine Mistake" was much more in tune with the "real world" types of lifestyles and it went across economic and racial lines, something that this book does not do. Plus, it made for a somewhat dry and boring read.
This book was great. I would recommend this book to any women thinking about starting a family or anyone concerned with the shortage of women in corporate world. This book read almost like a novel since you follow the lives of several women. It is very enjoyable and dosen't preach about which choice is better for a women to make, working or staying at home. I really liked it and learned a lot. My one complaint is that women in this book are all super rich and had very powerful jobs. Perhaps the author should have looked at minority and middle class women as well.
Beautifully written, this book tells compelling stories of real lives, while exposing the often hidden factors that force women to make tough choices between caring for their families and continuing in their chosen professions. Lack of flexibility on the job, luck of the draw in finding sympathetic bosses, ridiculous social norms of working as if no employee had a personal life, lack of mentoring, low continuity in corporate relationships and networks, stigma of part-time work, pressure on single-earner spouses to spend more and more time on the job--all these constrain our ability to find the optimal balance of work and life. The women in this book speak to all of us, men, women, stay-at-home moms and working moms, with or without children, seeking to find true productivity and happiness. This book is thought-provoking! Enjoy it!
Noting a phenomenon that might seem to recall a previous era, The New York Times Magazine recently portrayed women who leave their careers in order to become full-time mothers as "opting out." But, are high-achieving professional women really choosing to abandon their careers in order to return home? This provocative study is the first to tackle this issue from the perspective of the women themselves. Based on a series of candid, in-depth interviews with women who returned home after working as doctors, lawyers, bankers, scientists, and other professions, Pamela Stone explores the role that their husbands, children, and coworkers play in their decision; how women's efforts to construct new lives and new identities unfold once they are home; and where their aspirations and plans for the future lie. What we learn--contrary to many media perceptions--is that these high-flying women are not opting out but are instead being pushed out of the workplace. Drawing on their experiences, Stone outlines concrete ideas for redesigning workplaces to make it easier for women--and men--to attain their goal of living rewarding lives that combine both families and careers.

(Love You, Loveday)

(A thriller and love story united)

(Love You, Loveday by G.A. Hauser)
Former adult film star Gabriel "Angel" Loveday now owns a book store, The Uncut Buzzard. Angel's past comes back to haunt him when his sixteen year old son Oliver finds out about it. Oliver is distraught and begins acting out. He's hanging out with a weird kid named Perry who is obsessed with Angel's past. When someone starts leaving photos and his old movies for him to find, Angel calls the police. Detective Billy Sharpe is assigned to the case. Billy has had a crush on Angel since he first watched his movies many years ago. He's thrilled to get the chance to get to know Angel. As the men strike a romantic relationship, Angel's stalker is getting bolder and more dangerous.

Angel used to be a porn star and then he became a straight laced book store owner. It's very sexy. His inner sex pot comes out with Billy. Billy's desire and excitement for Angel is adorable. Oliver's feelings seem genuine and understandable. The stalker's identity is not a big mystery, but Love you, Loveday is still a pretty good story with a loving and hot romance.

reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed

All through this book the tension continues to build for Angel Loveday as someone is trying to bring his sordid past back to the present. Though Angel has tried to protect his son Oliver from learning about his acting in soft porn as a young man, it's obvious he didn't do Oliver any favors by hiding it. The detective Billy Sharpe is the perfect hero, big and dreamy and he has always had the hots for Loveday's films. The mixture of drama and romance is smooth and well written. And Angel keeps appearing in this author's books creating a feeling of a universe of her characters. Fun hot read.
The last book by G.A. Hauser is... creepy! I can't imagine how she manages to be so different from book to book and still being so unique that reading one of her books you can only think, yes, this is an Hauser's book.

Gabriel "Angel" Loveday was a soft porn gay actor. In the eighties he did all you would expect from a porn actor, sex, drugs and... well, maybe not rock and roll, but for the other two, plenty and more. Something happened, we don't know what, and 20 years later he is a widowed single dad of a teen son. With the money made in the past he has bought a little cottage beach front in Santa Monica and a indie bookstore on Redondo Beach. He seems to have a pretty nice life but he is hiding: hiding from his past and hiding from his true nature, to not tell to his son who he was and who he still is, he chooses a celibate life. But the past is not ready to be left behind: at the same time when a high school mate of his son tells the true to the boy, someone begins to stalk Angel at home and at work. Little things escalate to an almost raping using a rape drugs.

Billy Sharpe is a police officer: he is assigned to a property crime and he sees a dream comes true; his youth idol, Angel Loveday, the man who was in his dreams for years, is living only few miles from him. And he has the chance to meet him. Thinking to use an excuse to meet the man, Billy finds himself in love and involved in a bigger case than expected.

As always Hauser's characters are not simply to love. Even if Gabriel is now a good father, he is not a perfect man; he made some bad mistakes in the past and he is not facing them now. He tends to hide behind a wall of glass, thinking that ignoring the problem will made it disappears. And he has a big ego: oh, he is repentant for making that movies in the past, and he doesn't like when his past draws him attention from ugly strangers, but when the attention arrives from an handsome cop, well it is another matter... Still, maybe, trying a bit you could like Gabriel, he is so ready to love and so easy to love...

Who I find really difficult to classify is Billy. He makes and says all the right things. He is ready to fall in love of the real Gabriel after loving him like a fan. He is always here to protect him and he never disowns him, he also puts in danger his career to protect the man he loves. But he does some things, say some things and he doesn't show any compassion for a troubled kid... Maybe this is the real life, maybe how Billy acts is like every good cop should act. Maybe what I was expecting from him is a romance thing, and reality is not a romance. Maybe this is the reason why I don't like to read the newspaper with the horror of every day life and I prefer to lose myself in a romance.

The strenght of a G.A. Hauser's book is all in this: you close the book and stop reading it but you can't stop your mind from thinking on it.

Angel Loveday thought he had put his life as a gay soft-porn star of the 1980’s behind him. For seventeen years he’s hidden his sexuality and sordid past from his teenage son. But when someone threatens Angel’s secret and Detective Billy Sharpe is assigned to his case, he finds himself having to once again face them both. Since his youth Billy Sharpe has had eroticon-screen images of Angel Loveday emblazoned in his mind. Now Angel is there in the flesh, needing his protection and stirring up the passionate fantasies that Billy thought he’d long ago abandoned. As the harassment continues and the danger grows, Billy and Angel become closer. What began as an instant attraction turns into an undeniable hunger that unlocks Angel’s heart. It’s a race against time as Billy tries to save the man of his dreams from a life without love and the maniacal stalker hell-bent on destroying him.

(Enjoyable and Informative)

(Very helpful)

(Mistress enjoyed this book)

(Why Didn't Anyone think of this before?)

(Got male parts or play with them? This book is for you!)
I found this book to be easy to read, well organized and very informative for the beginner. It covers safety issues and guidelines, as well as offers suggestions for play. Im glad I purchased this book!
My wife loved the book and has found it very informative. She was not aware that she knew so much through our trial and error methods, but now more errors....just more fun.
I Purchased this book for my Mistress. She read it entirely in one sitting! She very much enjoyed the look on my face as she described what she had read.
Let's get all the cliches out of the way first. "The Family Jewels" is a gem. It is precise, finely cut to spec and invaluable. In fact, the first time I laid eyes on it, my first thought was, why didn't anyone think of this before?

Hardy Haberman has filled a void in the SM literary canon that not only give tips to the experienced edge player, but to beginners as well. There are also a few chunks of anecdotal scene evidence to add the touch of hard-on reading that any book of this nature needs to keep the entertainment value at a maximum.

You may not be familiar with Mr. Haberman, who considers himself a "Pain Technologist." He specializes in CBT and has an unusual fondness for clips, clamps and clothespins, as well as more exotic SM play. I recommend this book to anyone with even a passing interest in learning about esoteric genital play.

When we hear or see the term CBT we think "torture" and that usually makes us all cross our legs. But Haberman's book is really focused on creating intense or simply pleasureable sensations for male genitals in ways that do not involve intercourse. The book has four main divisions: anatomy, safety (please don't skip over this one), basics&toys of CBT, and finally a collection of nine short stories to demostrate the first three sections. The stories aren't really arousing, they are more instructive. If CBT is something you've thought about but know little about, this is a great place to get information. Read it with your partner and you can figure out what he is interested in.

(Great journey that stretches the imagination!)

(amazing romp)

(Tantric Lunacy&Tracking Identity)

("Keep your promises, Keep clean, Keep going")

(Must Read)
Wow, what an incredibly trippy ride through the Wild West! Set primarily in the gold mining town of Excellent, Idaho during the early 1900's, this novel is filled with adventure and history, magic and adventure, love and debauchery, philosophy and religion. "The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon" is one of the more creatively imagined novels that I've come across recently. At its core is the coming of age story of the main character and narrator Shed, whose quest for a fuller understanding of self leads him on an odyssey that ends, as many do, exactly where it started. In the telling of this story, Spanbauer reinforces the idea that it's rarely the destination but the journey that transforms. Populated with characters both loveable and detestable the novel intertwines each character's story in a way that allows for an exploration of Native American beliefs, frontier values and the human debris that results when the two collide.

It's also a story about the importance of stories; "You can't stop people from talking" - explains Ida, the novel's heroine - "They talk and pretty soon you got a story, and what's a human being without a story?" "The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon" is not for the faint of heart. It can be seen as modern day ribald in the tradition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales or an insightful philosophical debate on the nature of the human soul, or both. Vices and virtues intersect in this novel in ways that are at once shocking and enlightening. So get ready for a wild ride on this airship in route to a visit with the man in the moon. These are stories that are comforting and unsettling, familiar and eye opening. But, "you got to consider the source", cautions Ida, "a story about a crazy man, told by crazy people should only make you wonder." Kudos to Spanbauer for superb execution and many thanks to Dave M. for this recommendation. Enjoy!

this is simply my favorite piece of fiction, ever. in the guise of a queerly twisted cowboy story, the author explores issues of sexuality, politics, family life, freedom, spirituality, religion, love, lust, power, sanity, and magic. and did i mention the hot sex? i alternately laughed, cried, and thoughtfully pondered every dozen pages or so.
WHEN I HEAR ABOUT A BOOK from three or four different sources within a short time span, I generally surrender to the Universe, obtain a copy and push it onto the "on-deck circle" of my reading list--cutting ahead of dozens of other books, which are no doubt outraged at the brash line-jumper. Such was the case with Tom Spanbauer's The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon and the queue-hopping proved well justified by the quality of this novel.

Studded with stories, oozing with style and rife with sagacity and humor (from wry smiles to sorry-I-woke-you-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night-honey belly-laughs) this book announces itself as a masterpiece from the first page and doesn't relent until the last.

The narrator, Shed, a half Native American/half white youth, is raised within the confines of a whorehouse in the old West town of Excellent, Idaho at the turn of the twentieth century. Ida Richilieu, the brothel's madam, takes the boy in after his mother is murdered and houses him Out-in-the-Shed (thus, his name), where he also takes on male customers wanting a little bit of his innocence and a whole lot of his "endowment."

Shed does have a real name, Duivichi-un-Dua, and when he comes of age he sets off to find its Shoshone meaning, to learn more of his mother and her people, and discover the identity of his father. By and by, through twists and turns, Shed does uncover these truths about himself, and along the way meets Dellwood Barker, the green-eyed eponymous moon-lover who possesses esoteric knowledge of lunar effects on humanity. Dellwood is also well-versed in tantric sexual techniques, which he employs with both men and women.

The fluid sexuality of some of Spanbauer's main characters, and their (and his authorial) sensibilities engender in me a warm feeling of literary and personal affinity with Mr. Spanbauer. We share concerns and his methods for parsing them often mirror my own, though there are profound differences as well.

The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon climbed into my Top Ten Novels list as easily as a frightened child enters its parents' bed. (See my Top Ten List below). I'm loath to explicate too much of the marvelous plot of this novel, as I am of a mind that water tastes best at the source. Go to this book with an open mind and heart, and be prepared for sadness and splendor, and one helluva joyous, bumpy ride. See also Sanity's Bane

My Top Ten Novels of All Time (or at least the ones I've managed to read so far, in a loosely attempted ranking system--you shouldn't hold me to any of this I could change my mind in an hour or two).

1. The Tin Drum, Günter Grass
2. Midnight's Children, Salman Rushdie
3. Sometimes a Great Notion, Ken Kesey
4. Geek Love, Katherine Dunn
5. Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison
6. Crime and Punishment, Fyodor Dostoyevsky
7. The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon, Tom Spanbauer
8. On the Road, Jack Kerouac
9. Dhalgren, Samuel R. Delaney
10. Cat's Cradle, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
If you like these books, you may also enjoy Sanity's Bane

I have to start by saying "Wow!" I think I actually read EVERY word in this book. I didn't want to let anything get past me.

This is the most memorable work I've read in my 31 years. The characters were vivid and deep, and their feelings - I felt I was looking into the heart of humanity. The characters - especially Shed - were open and descriptive of their feelings and intentions; and those feelings seemed true and real to me.

I could find myself in so many of the characters. In Shed, I empathized with his need to resolve his great mystery - even though he didn't know what the mystery was. In Delwood, I saw echoes of the kindness and generosity I aim to give and receive in my own life. In Ida, I understood the need to maintain consistency in an effort to succeed (or to soothe - which is it?), and the fight for what's "fair".

Mr. Spanbauer has gone far beyond a piece of entertainment, and has created a piece of literature. Moon ... deserves to be savored, contemplated, discussed and analyzed. It's been a while since a piece has motivated me to do any creative writing; Moon did that for me. You'd better believe that if I had the opportunity, I'd be right there at Mr. Spanbauer's kitchen table where he has mentored people like Chuck Palahniuk.

I won't attempt to go into plot summaries and themes - just buy the book and read it.

If you are Native American, African American, or GLBT you must read this book. Following the lives and tribulations of a [...] child raised in a whorehouse we get exposed to the turn of the century old west in Excellent, Idaho. A fascinating read that will question and make you reflect on everyone of your core values.
Set against the harsh reality of an unforgiving landscape and culture,The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moonprovides a vision of the Old West unlike anything seen before. The narrator, Shed, is one of the most memorable characters in contemporary fiction: a half-Indian bisexual boy who lives and works at the Indian Head Hotel in the tiny town of Excellent, Idaho. It's the turn of the century, and the hotel carries on a prosperous business as the town's brothel. The eccentric characters working in the hotel provide Shed with a surrogate family, yet he finds in himself a growing need to learn the meaning of his Indian name, Duivichi-un-Dua, given to him by his mother, who was murdered when he was twelve.

Setting off alone across the haunting plains, Shed goes in search of an identity among his true people, encountering a rich pageant of extraordinary characters along the way. Although he learns a great deal about the mysteries and traditions of his Indian heritage, it is not until Shed returns to Excellent and witnesses a series of brutal tragedies that he attains the wisdom that infuses this exceptional and captivating book.

(An Essential History of Gay Rights)

(Reclaiming Our History)

(Excellent work, essential reading for anyone looking for a rough guide to gay history.)
As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, a large segment of my clientele is from the gay, lesbian, bi- and trans-gendered community. I am always looking for resources to augment therapy - - books, movies, music, etc. This book, 'Making Gay History' is an excellent resource for those who want to understand the history of the gay and lesbian movement towards equality in our country. It is told from first person accounts by those who experienced the times and events. I also teach classes on counseling the GLBT population and am president of our local PFLAG chapter.

The book begins with the era that comes before any gay rights existed. It is followed by the years 1950-1961, when gay rights first began taking root. Then comes 1961-1968 when the GLBT community began speaking out, setting goals and making demands. The book then goes into Gay Liberation and, sadly, the shadow of AIDS from 1981-1992.

Overall, this is an interesting and riveting history of the GLBT community in our country. I think it should be required reading for any course on gay rights and that any provider of services for the GLBT community should read this book.

Reclaiming Our History

Amos Lassen

Eric Marcus takes a careful look at our history with his updated version of the book he originally published in 1992. Using the stories of 60 different people, he takes us through fifty years of GLBT history; a history that has changed the face of America.
We have the voices of Al Gore, Ellen DeGeneres as well as Abigail Van Buren and lesser known personalities like Dr. Evelyn Hooker. What these voices do is show us a changing America and the lives of those that have struggled to make the change happen.
The history of the GLBT movement is moving and shocking but it is so important that we are aware of it. It is the history of the courage of individuals who have brought about change. The book covers from 1945 to the present and the topics range from the Mattachine Society to PFLAG and the Scouts Movement. Here is a broad look at our history that is well written and easy to read.

This is an excellent collection of first-person narratives of gay life in America from 1945 to the present. The people interviewed cover everything from the Mattachine society to PFLAG to the GSA movement. Extremely useful for getting a broad look at the LGBT rights movement in America.

I personally prefer "Making History" by the same author because the interviews appear all at once. This edition has events organized by date, which can be a little hard to follow.

From the Boy Scouts and the U.S. military to marriage and adoption, the gay civil rights movement has exploded on the national stage. Eric Marcus takes us back in time to the earliest days of that struggle in a newly revised and thoroughly updated edition ofMaking History, originally published in 1992. Using the heart-felt stories of more than 60 people, he carries us through the compelling five-decade battle that has changed the fabric of American society.

The rich tapestry that emerges fromMaking Gay Historyincludes the inspiring voices of teenagers and grandparents, journalists and housewives, from the little known Dr. Evelyn Hooker and Morty Manford to former Vice President Al Gore, Ellen DeGeneres, and Abigail Van Buren. Together, these many stories bear witness to a time of astonishing change as gay and lesbian people have struggled against prejudice and fought for equal rights under the law.

(Loved it)

(Enjoyable)

(Even funnier if you're from St. Louis)

(Love This Book!!!!!)

(Another Great Book!)
Hilarious and touching, a quick read that left me wanting more. Wade Rouse picked an odd place to go about the business of finding himself. I will definitely read the rest of his works.
Quick Read -- You know there are people like these "mean mommies" or M2 as the authors describes the women with nothing else to do except to micromanage the private school staff their children attend.

Wade Rouse's second memoir is extremely amusing for anyone who has seen prep school from either the in or out crowds' perspectives. I suspect that most premier prep schools have their share of the Mean Mommies mocked in this memoir. That said, those from the St. Louis area will find this especially entertaining.

Following its publication, Rouse conducted a number of interviews. He refused to confirm or deny that Tate Academy was inspired by the years he spent as Director of Communications at a toney local prep school. If you want to identify the school, the information can be googled, but I don't want to spoil the fun. Local press interviews with graduates and staff at the school indicated that they all understood what school was being discussed. St. Louis natives who answer the "which high school" question will doubtless enjoy trying to identify the country club and some of the characters. Rouse stated that every hilarious incident, including when a 90+ year old alum chugged whiskey and pushed him down a staircase during a school event, was based on an actual experience. For those of you from the hallowed halls of Tate, you may find his catty digs cut a little close to the bone. It all depends which crowd you were in and how seriously you took it all.

This is a great book. I was so sad when it was over. You feel like you are friends with the author. I can't wait for the next book.
Wade Rouse is a fantastic author and this book is a great example of his work. Funny and heartbreaking all at the same time, Wade sure knows how to tell a story. I plan to read everything this superb author writes.
At an elite prep school, the devil wears Lilly Pulitzer pink.

When Wade Rouse, who grew up more Hee-Haw than Dynasty, was hired as the director of publicity at the prestigious Tate Academy, he quickly discovered his real job: to make the very pretty, very rich, very mean mommies of the elite students very happy.

Enter Wade’s VIP volunteer and perfectly coiffed nightmare, former beauty queen and sports star Katherine Isabelle Ludington—Kitsy to her friends. In between designing Louis Vuitton–inspired reunion invitations, dressing as Ronald Reagan for Halloween, and surviving surprise Botox parties, Wade tries totame Kitsy and her pink Lilly Pulitzer–clad posse while retaining a shred of self-esteem.

Following a year in the life of the super rich and super spoiled,Confessions of a Prep School Mommy Handleris hilarious, heartbreaking, and deliciously catty.

(Homos on the Range)

(Highly Recommended)

Homos on the Range

Amos Lassen

"Cowboy Up" is an anthology of gay cowboy stories that come from all over and span more than a century. These are some of the best ever written. The cowboys are big and bad, sexy, intelligent and stubborn. Above all they are rugged.
I liked every story in the book and of course I liked some more than others. It is interesting to see romance in these stories as well. There is a lot of hot sex to go with the romance as well as a good deal of emotion.
If I had to pick a favorite and that is hard I would have to say it is "Stormclouds" about not staying angry with a lover and Dallas Coleman has written some wonderful prose. Jordan Lane's "Surrender" is an excellent story about hot and sexy cowboys who share conflicts.
If I had to pick one word to describe the anthology I would have to say "subtle". There is love that is not spoken of and I love the differing views of the relationships between the men. Now that gay cowboys are in vogue, you just might want to read this.

This book wasn't quite what I had expected. Like any anthology there is wide variety of writing, but there were some real gems among its stories.
Some are very good tales of gay romance.

There are some EXCELLENT short stories here! They deal with subtlety, they deal with the day to day life of cowboys on the open range, they deal with love experienced but not spoken. Only one or two are overdone as far as the sex scenes. Otherwise, the several authors featured do a very credible job of how difficult a relationship can be when it's between two dominant males. What surprised me was how well the female authors did with the theme, though I don't think they are on a par with gay male writers. The book goes on my second shelf.
I was recommened this anthology by a friend as a good first book to try in the m/m erotica genre, and WOW, I was blown away! I enjoyed every single story, and I can honestly say that that has never been true of any kind of anthology I've read before. I liked some more than others - Stormclouds, Dry Bones and Surrender were exceptional - but I didn't dislike any of them. All were instantly engaging *and* believeable in a very short space, whereas so many other anthology stories I've read have not been able to pull that off.

I was also pleasantly surprised at how romantic the stories were - I appreciated the hot sex, but was really hooked by the depth of emotion portrayed within such a broad range of characters. I even teared up several times, and in my head all of the couples who might live happily ever after, do.

Kudos, also, to editer Rob Knight, who put them all together for me. I will absolutely be recommending this to friends, but I'm not sharing my copy!

Wow! Rob Knight found some truly HOT stories here. I liked them all and felt they all had not only sizzling sex, but, more importantly, some really good plot lines. Some of them should have been written as full length books, especially my favorite: Jourdan Lane's "Surrender." Hot, sexy cowboys steaming with mutual attraction and, at the same time, serious conflicts between them. Lane's story could well be the core of a much longer, even more satisfying book developing not only the two protagonists but a couple of the secondary characters as well. Not all of the stories ended "happily ever after," but they were satisfying in their conclusions. This book is well worth a try, and it will prove to be hard (so to speak) to put down.
Ride’em cowboy! That’s what you’ll be shouting once you’ve read the Cowboy Up anthology. Editor Rob Knight has gathered a great selection of stories from authors like Sean Michael, BA Tortuga and Parhelion, featuring cowboys from around the globe and across more than a hundred years. These stories all illustrate the best and worst of the breed. Stubborn, independent, and sexy as all get out, the cowboys of Cowboy Up will leave you smiling, sometimes crying, but always admiring the tough, rugged man that rides the range and keeps his bedroll warm at night. Get yourself a cowboy today!

(Not the best book ...)

(I liked it!!)

(I really enjoyed it except...)

(Falling)

(Not My Favorite Book Ever)
I'm just beginning to dip my toes into the m/m romance genre after realizing that I wasn't the only one in the world who thought that two guys developing a relationship together could be exciting, emotional, and hot, and that there were some who actually wrote and published such things.

This book was one of the first I read, but, unfortunately, was not as great as I thought it would be from the summary and the reviews left by others. In fact, it reminded me of the trashy mainstream romances I read when I was 14 and had no idea what a good novel was.

The plot was good and interesting (with lots of wonderful back-story to flesh it out), but was resolved way too quickly -- within a single, short chapter that was the next to the last in the book. I thought the two main characters were quite stupid to not realize one of the pivotal plot points and thus solve the mystery earlier. It would have saved them a lot of pain and trouble, though I suppose that would have robbed the author of what I do admit was a scary and emotional climax to said mystery.

The main characters were very sympathetic, but it was incredibly hard for me to believe that they would be spouting I love you's and This is meant to be's as soon as they did, especially as one was suffering through the recent death of his boyfriend. I can understand if there was some "bond" of some sort at work (being in the paranormal/fantasy genre), but it was never explained.

I'm keeping this on my shelf despite these rather large drawbacks because of the blazing hot sex that was liberally sprinkled throughout. If this author lacks in plot and character development, they definitely know how to write good m/m sex that makes you squirm in your chair. It's the only reason I gave it 3 stars and not 2.

This was an interesting novel, not the fact that it was about a gay couple, but because of the magic and all kinds of things like that. It was an interesting read and I liked it. I'll have 2 check out more novels by this author in the future, and I do recommend this book. Although it was my 1st by her I enjoyed it.
This was the first book I have read from this author and I really liked it. The only problem I had with it was the rapidness of the depth of the relationship of Chris and Alex. I felt that part jumped way too fast. For me it takes more than a week to know that someone is for you ....forever.
Do you believe in ghosts?

That's the question that Diana Christmas has been asking herself lately. It all started the night her grandfather, Sparky Christmas, died. On her way home from the hospital, Diana knew her mind was playing a trick on her when she saw a man sitting in the back of her car through the rearview mirror. Of course, no one was there. Yet, when Diana arrived home, she saw the same man in her bedroom and he introduced himself as Alex. Diana thought she was losing her mind due to the stress from the dying of her beloved grandfather. Not to mention inheriting the family's century old home - the Christmas House which Sparky was in the process of turning into a bed and breakfast before he died. Nevertheless, Alex continues to appear causing havoc on her libido. Diana tries to ignore him by dating a man she once went to school with; but somehow, Alex still manages to creep into her heart and soul. Can things possibly get any worse for Diana?

Christmas Spirit is a touching, fun-loving story that captured my heart right from the start and held me tightly intrigued until the very end. I was persistently turning from one page to the next eager to see what would happen as this wonderful story unfold. I found Diana to be an independent, yet vulnerable woman who was trying to hold onto her sanity by trying to form a relationship with a `live man", instead of living in a fantasy world with a ghost which led to her being taken advantage of on many occasions. On the flip side, Alex had great charisma. He was sexy as hell, witty and strong-willed. The storyline was very satisfying and exciting with a great deal of surprising drama going on. Both the main and secondary characters were great. Christmas Spirit had more of an old-fashion romantic flavor to it than erotic, so the faint of heart readers will definitely enjoy this book!

A novel that struggles to make any of it's main characters believable. There's a lot of effort towards this, but it all falls flat once the inevitable relationship between the two leads starts to develop.
As the leader of an elite British group that hunts criminals of the magic world, Christian Wetherly comes to the U. S. undercover, posing as a British cop, to investigate a series of murders he suspects have been committed by a dark mage. He never expects, however, to find himself intensely attracted to the American police detective in charge of the case. Christian has long struggled with his hidden desires and hasn't admitted them to anyone. But Alec Anderson stirs something deep within him that's difficult to ignore. Still...even if he could master his fear of coming out, Christian's dedicated himself to protecting the world from magic terrors. It's a dangerous life an ordinary human could never understand or accept. And to complicate matters, Alec's emotionally vulnerable, still grieving the death of his previous lover, a fellow cop killed in the line of duty. So Christian's determined to keep his true occupation and powers hidden from Alec. Neither man can deny the powerful chemistry that burns between them, and both realize they're falling hard for one another, yet with so many secrets and complications, a relationship seems impossible. When the two men becomes the target of the dark magic, however, and clues about an ancient legacy come to light that indicate Alec may not be exactly what he seems, can they find the strength to tear down all the barriers between them and risk their hearts in order to save each other's lives?

(Carching the Murderer)

(Good Sequel)

(Imaginative and realistic crime drama with two gay cops as heroes!)
Simpson, John. "Task Force", Dreamspinner Press, 2008.

Catching the Murderer

Amos Lassen

John Simpson follows his novel "Murder Most Gay" with the sequel, "Task Force". What makes this book so interesting is that the perpetrator of the crime (which I will get to in a moment) is revealed early on and this is not about catching him but about seeing how a police force proves him to indeed be guilty.
Two weeks after the ending of "Murder Most Gay", new policemen Pat and Hank are on the street doing usual cop legwork--taking care of little incidents. They soon hear about a series of murders and wonder if they have anything in common with the previous case. Pat is deeply involved with his new partner, Dean when he is called upon to deal with the new string of murders. Hank is also involved with a new squeeze. Hank and Pat are in fear of being outed by a blackmailer as they begin their investigation. The killings continue and so does pressure to find the guilty person and our two cops are forced into going undercover and purely by chance, they find a witness who points at one of the most powerful men in the state. Now Pat and Hank are forced into risking their lives to catch him or to let him get away.
It really isn't necessary to have read "Murder Most Gay" to follow what is going on here but it would help you to understand Hank and Pat better since their relationship evolves from the first book to the second.

This book takes up a couple of weeks after Murder Most Gay ends. It is a good sequel, but if you haven't read MMG you won't be lost. It is the continuing story of Pat, his boyfriend Dean and Hank-Pat's partner at work. Someone is killing gay men again and Pat and Hank end up on the Task Force to find the killer. Pat and Dean's relationship is evolving nicely and Hank finds a boyfriend as well. It is not a mystery since we are told fairly early on who the killer is, but is more about how they catch him. There were a few editing issues that were annoying, but not too hard to ignore.
Their "rookie" days behind them, Prince George County (Maryland) police officers Pat St. James and Hank Capstone are now on solo patrols, dealing with the majority of mundane police calls on their overnight shifts. They're also settling in a bit in their private lives, Pat with his live-in lover, Dean, and Hank with a hunky boy-toy he ironically met in a convenience store! They deal with an attempted blackmailer, threatening to "out" them to their fellow police officers. Two cases of murder, involving young men who had been drugged, raped and strangled, lead to familiar territory with Pat going undercover as "bait" for the killer, who turns out to be a high profile public official.

Simpson indicates this as a "sequel" to his early "Murder Most Gay" crime novel, featuring the same characters, and it is best read after reading the first book. Enough detail about prior events is provided to allow it as a stand-alone read, but an empathy with the characters from the previous book would add to the enjoyment of the read.

It is a thin line that authors of "erotic novels" walk, trying to keep the balance of sexually-explicit content to the point where it adds, rather than detracts, from the pacing and plot of the book. It's a line that Simpson hit perfectly in the first book, but I think the erotic passages here - which were all in the first half of the book, delaying the start of the "real" story, dragged the book down. Still, it is a clever and original crime novel, with a refreshing "real" take on police work, and I give it four stars out of five.

Sequel to Murder Most Gay Promoted to his own patrol beat after solving a series of anti-gay murders, Prince George County police officer Patrick St. James is happily deepening his relationship with his new lover, Dean, when more young, gay men start turning up dead. He and fellow officer Hank Capstone, now in a relationship of his own with a cute clerk from the local Seven-Eleven, face being outed by a blackmailer as they begin their investigation into the murders. As the killings continue and the pressure to find the perpetrator intensifies, Pat and Hank go undercover again, and Dean has to face the sometimes harsh realities of loving a cop. When a chance DUI stop nets them a potential witness who implicates one of the most powerful men in the state, the two officers have to choose between risking their lives and letting the murderer get away scot-free.

(BUY THE TRILOGY.)

(Was the secret worth keeping?)

(It doesn't get any better than this!)

(Unique book)

(316 Stars)
I've just finished reading this trilogy for the second time and I reccomend it to anyone who wants to read a love story. This story has grace, charm and enough sizzle for anyone. It is a story of finding and loosing and finding again the love of a lifetime. My only reccomendation is to buy "The Secret Trilogy " because I can't fathom that anyone reading book one wouldn't want to know what happens to Lydia, Helaine and all their friends and enemies.
I bought this book based solely on the reviews of the other readers since I had never read anything by Francine Saint Marie. After reading the book I had to wonder if I had read the same book as everyone else. The book did not keep my interest at all. I forced myself to finish it hoping it would get better. It didn't.

First of all, a book with no chapters is distracting and needs to hold the readers attention. This one did not. When I buy a book with a lesbian theme I want to read about the interaction between the women. The book was 309 pages and it was 150 pages before the two main characters even spoke to each other. This book is not a mystery or a thriller and as a romance novel it is lacking.

If it had been a period piece I could have tolerated it better because in the 1800's or early 1900's it was costly and dangerous to be open about being a lesbian. But this is not a period piece and these two women are independent and well off financially. One is a doctor and author, the other is a well sought after corporate executive. The book was boring and the theme overplayed.

The fact that it was given 5 starts by everyone who read it makes me no longer trust the review process. When you have a book that EVERYONE thinks is 5 star material then it's time for that book to cross over to the NY Times Best Selling List. I don't think there's any danger of that.

As with the other reviewers here, WE LOVED THIS BOOK and this new author's compelling voice. Saint-Marie joins the ranks of Sarah Waters and Rita Mae Brown in bringing quality fiction and romance to an ailing genre, perhaps even surpassing them in presenting one of the most unique and outstanding epic love stories we've come across so far. No, The Secret Keeping, with its extraordinary prose and its unabashed tenderness and sensuality, doesn't neatly fit into any particular genre, but then who says it really has to? It's breathtaking...and that's enough.

Fortune Is a Woman THE STOLEN KISS

Like many of the reviewers listed above, I found Francine Saint Marie's novel to be quite unique. I had no trouble getting into the almost stream-of-consciousness flow of the dialogue and I very much enjoyed the electric pace of the book. Writing from the inner perspective of the characters was entertaining and employed a clever technique in storytelling.

My original title for this review was going to be "raising the bar for lesbian fiction", but then I thought, well that's just not saying enough, considering where it sits. Francine Saint Marie has not just raised the bar, she's taken it to a different planet. I am currently packing up and planning to move there.

As readers of lesbian fiction, especially romance, we have come to expect, well, not very much. Even when something's good, (i.e. the writing doesn't make us cringe every few pages or so), it's really only mediocre at best. So we settle for second rate, keep our jugs of salt handy as we attempt to maneuver our way through all the 5 star reviews some of you seem to hand out like they are Halloween candy, and keep trying out new authors. Hoping and praying that one day, our luck will change, that out of the abyss will emerge someone with keen discernment and extraordinary talent, ready and willing to indulge us thoroughly. Well, that day has finally arrived, ladies. And what a glorious day it is...

Imagine, if you can, a work of lesbian fiction that leaves nothing to be desired whatsoever... that challenges your intellect, reaches into the unheralded parts of your psyche, and whispers sweet promises to your heart. Imagine prose that is masterfully subtle and invigorating, at times even intoxicating. Imagine dialogue that is intelligent, quick-witted, and never uninspired. Imagine descriptions of love-making that aren't overstated, flagrant and embarrassing, that actually leave something to the imagination but are no less titillating. Imagine having that routine cringe replaced with a contented sigh and an irrepressible grin. Indeed, you can expect no less from Francine Saint Marie's first novel (first novel?!), THE SECRET KEEPING. I haven't read anything more compelling and personally satisfying (from any genre) than this book and its sequel, FORTUNE IS A WOMAN. I am completely addicted to the author's writing - and to her leading ladies. Truth be told, Helaine and Lydia are as real to me as most of the people I encounter daily in 3-D. They are certainly far more appealing! Some might find that strange, but all I can say is it feels perfectly natural. When our outer world seems so stripped of its imaginativeness, we can, hopefully, rely on our inner world to pick up the slack.

So, thank you Francine, for such a stunning offering, for spoiling us so utterly. I am sure we could get used to it.

Dr. Helaine Kristenson is a leading authority in the field of psychosexual relations and the best selling author of the how-to bible, Keeping Mr. Right. Professionally, the esteemed doctor deals with secrets of the heart every day. Privately, she has quite a few of her own to keep her busy… What’s so Top Secret? Her seven year relationship with notorious model (and vamp), Sharon Chambers. Now their once hot union has become something less than perfect.

Wandering unwittingly into the middle of their web is disillusioned investment strategist and sleeping beauty, Lydia Beaumont, who observes the stunning Dr. Kristenson often from afar.

Adding to the fray are a dozen lawyers, a handful of corporate executives, and a gaggle of overzealous reporters, resulting in a highly public love triangle where the more private one is…the more exposed one becomes.

THE SECRET KEEPING is a high stakes, girl-gets-girl romance, where the moral of the story is that money can buy you love - if it's invested wisely...
