< International trade and rent sharing among developed and developing countries [An article from: Economic Modelling] > L. Fontagne,D. Mirza

This digital document is a journal article from Economic Modelling, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
How are rents from openness captured and shared among employers and employees located in different countries? In this paper, we derive a theoretical equation, based on rent sharing theories, linking industry wages to market shares held in different countries and then take it to the test. We construct a dataset that provides together trade, activity and labor related data for around 29 industries and 65 countries between 1981 and 1997. We find, for OECD countries, that an increase in sales on national markets or exports to other rich countries is associated with growth in wages in roughly one third to one half of the industries. Among developing countries however, the evidence is weaker. Such phenomenon of rent-sharing can be observed in Latin America and within Mediterranean countries but only when selling to their domestic market. Producers in these group of countries and Asia, appear however, to be unable to extract rents and redistribute them whenever they export to rich countries.

< On the evolution of comparative advantage in matching models [An article from: Journal of International Economics] > E.O'N. Fisher,V. Kakkar

 Elsevier
 Available for download now

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of International Economics, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
This paper examines whether comparative advantage is the long-run outcome of an evolutionary process in the open economy. It formalizes the notion that natural selection eliminates inefficient firms and thus leads to stable and perhaps efficient patterns of world trade. Instead of assuming the existence of a Walrasian auctioneer, we study two simple matching processes that coordinate trade between firms. Our central result is that specialization according to comparative advantage, with the larger country possibly incompletely specialized, is the unique evolutionarily stable state of the world economy.

< The WTO promotes trade, strongly but unevenly [An article from: Journal of International Economics] > A. Subramanian,S.J. Wei

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of International Economics, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
This paper furnishes robust evidence that the WTO has had a strong positive impact on trade, amounting to about 120% of additional world trade (or US$ 8 trillion in 2000 alone). The impact has, however, been uneven. This, in many ways, is consistent with theoretical models of the GATT/WTO. The theory suggests that the impact of a country's membership in the GATT/WTO depends on what the country does with its membership, with whom it negotiates, and which products the negotiation covers. Using a properly specified gravity model, we find evidence broadly consistent with these predictions. First, industrial countries that participated more actively than developing countries in reciprocal trade negotiations witnessed a large increase in trade. Second, bilateral trade was greater when both partners undertook liberalization than when only one partner did. Third, sectors that did not witness liberalization did not see an increase in trade.

< Does the internet defy the law of gravity? [An article from: Journal of International Economics] > B.S. Blum,A. Goldfarb

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of International Economics, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
We show that gravity holds in the case of digital goods consumed over the Internet that have no trading costs. Therefore trade costs cannot fully account for the effects of distance on trade. In particular, we show that Americans are more likely to visit websites from nearby countries, even controlling for language, income, immigrant stock, etc. Furthermore, we show that this effect only holds for taste-dependent digital products, such as music, games, and pornography. For these, a 1% increase in physical distance reduces website visits by 3.25%. For non-taste-dependent products, such as software, distance has no statistical effect.

< Local protectionism and regional specialization: evidence from China's industries [An article from: Journal of International Economics] > C.E. Bai,Y. Du,Z. Tao,S.Y. Tong

 price:$8.95

 Available for download now

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of International Economics, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
This paper uses a dynamic panel estimation method to investigate the determinants of regional specialization in China's industries, paying particular attention to local protectionism. Less geographic concentration is found in industries where the past tax-plus-profit margins and the shares of state ownership are high, reflecting stronger local government protection of these industries. The evidence also supports the scale-economies theory of regional specialization. Finally, the overall time trend of regional specialization of China's industries is found to have reversed an early drop in the mid-1980s, and registered a significant increase in the later years.

< Port efficiency, maritime transport costs, and bilateral trade [An article from: Journal of Development Economics] > X. Clark,D. Dollar,A. Micco

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Development Economics, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Recent literature has emphasized the importance of transport costs and infrastructure in explaining trade, access to markets, and increases in per capita income. For most Latin American countries, transport costs are a greater barrier to U.S. markets than import tariffs. We investigate the determinants of shipping costs to the United States with a large database of more than 300,000 observations per year on shipments of products aggregated at six-digit Harmonized System (HS) level from different ports around the world. Distance, volumes, and product characteristics all matter. In addition, we find that port efficiency is an important determinant of shipping costs. Improving port efficiency from the 25th to the 75th percentile reduces shipping costs by 12%. Bad ports are equivalent to being 60% farther away from markets for the average country. Inefficient ports also increase handling costs, which are one of the components of shipping costs. In turn, factors explaining variations in port efficiency include excessive regulation, the prevalence of organized crime, and the general condition of the country's infrastructure. Reductions in country inefficiencies, associated to transport costs, from the 25th to 75th percentiles imply an increase in bilateral trade of around 25%.

< Economic Obstacles to Expanding Intra-African Trade [An article from: World Development] > R. Longo,K. Sekkat

 price:$8.95
 Elsevier
 Available for download now

This digital document is a journal article from World Development, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
The paper extends the gravity model to examine the impact of infrastructure availability, economic policy, and internal political tensions on intra-African trade. To highlight specific obstacles hampering such a trade, bilateral trade between Africa and developed countries is also analyzed. The results show that, besides traditional gravity variables, poor infrastructure, economic policy mismanagement, and internal political tensions have a negative impact on trade among African countries. Except for political tensions, the identified obstacles are specific to intra-African trade, since they have no impact on African trade with developed countries.
