(On the edge of my seat...)
(An Engrossing Story Told by an Intelligence Insider) Not going to waste alot of time with long review. Horribly written. Never got to see what brilliance might be in concept because it is long winded, sloppy, POV shifts, excessive adjectives, etc. Just terrible. There is actually a craft to writing, if you aren't going to take the time to learn rudimentary basics of the craft, don't write. ...that's where I was while reading Meridian. Great book, can't wait for the next one from Andy Ceroni! "Meridian," the first novel written by retired counter-intelligence officer Andrew Ceroni, sparkles! Mr. Ceroni posits the reason behind such scientific advances as SDI and stealth technology to be a secret on the magnitude of the Manhattan Project. When former CIA agents begin dying, a high officer in the "Company" finds that his own life is in danger. His search for the "Who, what, and where" soon pales beside the "Why?" Mr. Ceroni writes with assurance and skill. He tells a good story; I found the book literally impossible to put down. His talent is in making his characters three-dimensional as they--and by extension, we-- live the experience. One may not like some of the characters, but they are real. The climax is organic to the story; I actually felt the characters' emotions. If you enjoy being present at the discovery of a major talent, buy a copy of "Meridian." Then, when your friends start discussing the plot twists of some future triumph, you can smile and say, "I knew when I read his first novel that he would be a major star."
How in the early 1980s did the United States achieve the dual technological coups ofStealthblack airships and theStar Warsspace-based defense program, bringing the Soviet Union to its knees in less than a decade? The answer:Meridian... the biggest of America's Big Secrets since the Atom Bomb... the furthest leading edge of weapons technology-with origins more profoundly startling than the technology itself. Governments would stop at nothing to get it. At deadly odds are Laszlo Csengerny, a KGB spy haunted by nightmarish demons from his past who is driven to destroy Meridian; Pete Novak, a CIA officer and unwitting pawn of theCompanywho must stop Laszlo at all costs; Phil O"Donnell, a paranoid Company agent consumed with ambition and creator of the sinister JOG-a group of rogue CIA operatives protecting the Project; and Novak's dedicated friend and security escort, J.T. Brannon, a legend in covert operations and a former assassin unmatched in the art of killing. As Novak unravels the alarming secrets behind Meridian, and his principled path converges with Laszlo's desperate search for peace, Novak and his family are swept into the crosshairs of paid Company assassins. Only Brannon, now a target himself, can save Novak's family-and he is committed to sacrificing his own life to do so. The final confrontation and the profound revelation of Meridian explodes into a deadly struggle over what may be the very future of humankind itself. Rerations < Meridian >

National Geographic Children's Books(2001-05-01)
customer 's review (A good start) Photography Guide For Kids is a slim, informative, quick read for kids who like to take creative pictures. I bought this for my son who is ten years old and has been snapping shots since he got his first Fisher Price camera when he was five. I noticed his interest in photography when he would ask to go for walks to test out his new camera on fenced in dogs barking at him and the buses going by. He read this book front to back in two days and took from it a bit more of an understanding in capturing mood, speed and creative portraits in different ways. I read this book myself and found it easy to understand the explanations on different cameras, film speed and black and white photos. Although not really a learning tool, I do feel this is a helpful guide to open up the minds of children interested in taking pictures. And the fact it's not a large text book, and is written on an age appropiate level makes it a good start for children who may not think they can learn all there is to learn about photography and may motivate them to capture their own memories and feelings in a creative way. And maybe they'll give the Nintendo a break. For the first time National Geographic presents a photo guide especially for kids ages 10 and up. Text, photos, and diagrams combine to teach basic photographic concepts, including composition, lighting, special effects, common pitfalls, etc., using a variety of simple point-and-shoot cameras. A section on digital photography will touch on using computers and the Internet to send photographs to friends and family. Tips from National Geographic photographers will be featured throughout. (Brilliant, funny, sweet, touching. Loved it!)
(Funny, Entertaining and a Great Read)
(My favorite Aaron Tucker novel yet)
(The best yet!) I love this series, and it keeps getting better. This time the real hero is Ethan, who creates a tender alliance with another Asperger person to solve the crime. I have worked with these folks as a clinician. Jeff's realistic gentle-handed portrayal of this syndrome, and how a very healthy family works with it, is worth the price. Then add that whacky humor, and a darn good mystery and it's a home run! Just love how Jeffrey Cohen weaves a complex tale of family, friends and mystery, and makes it all work together. The additional insights (beyond what's in the first two Aaron books) about Asperger's Syndrome really help us understand his relationship with his family and especially his son. The mystery kept me guessing all the way. A real page turner. And hilariously funny at times. More Aaron Tucker please!! Really well done comic mystery with great gobs of Jewish humor. You'll especially like the take on the holiday season from the Jewish point of view - and it's all too true. In addition we have a good mystery, some fun locals, some real characters and a lot of caring. Jeffrey Cohen has it all in this book, and he deserves to be recognized. In this book, the plot sings, the characterization is outstanding, and of course the humor is top notch. This book takes all of the entertainment value of the first two Aaron Tucker novels and adds even more suspense and excitement. Involving Aaron's son in the mystery-solving was a stroke of genious. The author at the top of his game with this one. Simply excellent!
Note: You don't have to read this series in order, so jump in here if you can. Once you read it, you'll be sure to go back and get the other two. This series just gets better. I stumbled upon the first of the series by accident, not knowing about the Asperger's slant and was quite startled to find what appeared to be my own son fictionalized in those pages. Since then, Cohen's writing has become more refined and the family Tucker even more fun to visit. I enjoyed the extended family angle, waiting breathlessly for Aaron to vent his spleen on the intruding (and insensitive) in-laws. Very entertaining. The dialog is mercifully never stilted - a peeve of mine. The addition of more in-depth insight into AS was very welcome; maybe little by little we'll educate the masses concerning "our kids"! The story line has plenty of twists to keep you in the dark and the book is difficult to put down. On the down side, that makes them a very quick read! Keep them coming, Jeff. In this, the third Aaron Tucker mystery, Aaron, fresh from a trip to Hollywood to "take meetings" on his screenplay, finds himself dragged kicking and screaming once again into investigating a murder, this time of a man in a nearby town shot while walking his dog at night. The young man accused of the crime has Asperger’s Syndrome, the same autism-related disorder that Aaron's son Ethan has had since birth.Aaron is hip-deep in the investigation when he’s assaulted by visiting Visigoths—-no, wait, that's just his wife Abby's brother and his family, come to visit for a week. But then a local mobster becomes aware of Aaron's poking around in the killing, and wants him to stop. It's going to be an especially interesting holiday season for New Jersey's funniest height-challenged amateur sleuth. customer 's review (generally good&helpful)
(Dissapointing pictures&book)
(Great book)
(Good for the beginner)
(Spend coins on this, but find it in F-12 to save money.) rather weak when you deal with uncirculated coins. very difficult area of grading. Almost useless for AU and MS grade coins. Very, very small and poor quality b/w pictures of coins. Dissapointing as it could have been great if high resolution pictures were used and enlarged. Also, not including pictures of MS60-67 grades truely limits this book. It is very helpful if all that you have to go off of is the Guide Book of United States Coins 2003: The Official Red Book, And I dont know what Wayne Lukert was thinking but they are real photographs. Gives a nice description of coins and a black and white photograph of every grade. also If you dont have any books on cleaning care and other helpful topics it has page after page about that stuff too. If your a beginner at coin collecting this may be okay for you. This book has hard to view pictures ( not photographs ) of the coins being used as samples. This alone can confuse the beginner,as imperfections appear on the pictures and may be mistaken for the actual coin. The written descriptions and arrows point to too specific areas. The areas to be scrutinized are much broader than the head of the arrow. A better book for the beginner is HOW TO GRADE U.S. COINS by James L. Halperin. It uses a color code system that is much easier to follow and the pictures have much better detail. Also type coins for newer coins are NOT dicussed. This book is exxentially an extended version of the coin conditions/states table that you'll commonly find in coin magazines. This book is much, much more complete and comprehensive as it covers all U.S. coins in circulation (no commemoratives) and has photos and key points of wear for each grade from About Good to About Uncirculated. This edition also has interesting chapters concerning the cleaning of coins and artificial toning. This reference is a great help to inexperienced collectors of USA coins who are building eclectic collections. Don't feel that you need to buy this book new, the grading information is static and, as you will learn much from this book in a short time, it won't be used much thus used copies are likely to be in excellent condition. Four stars because, as the young reviewer below states, color photos are sorely missed in this book. The single most useful book you can own to learn the essentials of coin grading,Photogradewas designated in 1972 as an Official Grading Guide by the American Numismatic Association.Photogradeis: --designed for beginner and advanced graders alike --illustrates every regular issue U.S. coin type from 1793 to date --contains more than 1000 coin photographs, many enlarged to show details. Both obverse and reverse pictures of every grade for every coin listed --uses easy-to-understand terms and grading descriptions --includes special chapters on counterfeits and Colonial coins, and how to grade, clean, and store coins Rerations < New Photograde: A Photographic Grading Guide for United States Coins >

customer 's review (Ancient Egypt, ancient knowledgements, nowadays teaching...)
(End of a quest) It is a rich story of how the Pyramid of Cheops was built. It is like a journey through the authoress' words. A journey to a world of kindness, friendship, love and truth. I felt I was there while reading... I think this is a marvelous book. The Great Pyramid of Egypt used to perplex me. How might a despotic pharaoh who employed slave labor have come out with clear signals of profound prophetic, astronomical and mathematical knowledge as those found in the pyramid's structure? Roselis von Sass' book allowed me to travel back in time so as to know the actual builders and to understand the purpose of that Wonder of the World now standing in the desert. This book uncovers the prophetic meaning and the extraordinary story of the construction of the Great Pyramid, solving the mysteries--of how and why was it built--that still today stun so many. The story is packed with exciting descriptions, full of lively recounting and dialogues, taking the reader to the very scenery and happenings that unfolded at that time.

customer 's review (Not the book for me!)
(Very encouraging and honest)
(This book really addresses the heart of homeschooling.)
(Gripping stuff)
(More than just a how-to book) None of the previous reviewers mention the religious aspect of this book. I was surprised by the many, many, many (too many) Biblical quotes and then bored by the authors' interpretations of these. The subchapter headings include such titles as "Humility," "Servanthood," "Making Christ the Center," and "Obedience" (and I could go on).The book seems intentionally vague--unlike other homeschooling books I've read, the Cards give no reasons for their curriculum choices, no mention of how they structure their school year, no mention of how they incorporate library or social time, no mention of any day to day activities, no mention of how they work within their state's homeschooling laws (or what that law is), no mention of how they assess progress. The book promises much more than it delivers. For example, the back cover states that the books "answers your questions about" "teaching children at different grade levels" (which was answered in 3 vague paragraphs). I was expecting a "journey" of the homeschool experience on a personal level with their family, and what I read seemed more like how to give your child a strong Christian background, with little insight on how this family incorporates homeschooling WITH their Christian values. I am guessing that the Cards' approach is to unschool, but then they never addressed that (or any other homeschool theory) either . . . The Homeschool Journey is very encouraging to those of us considering teaching out of the home. The honesty in sharing the family stories shows us that the "teacher" need not be perfect, just willing to listen, learn and adapt to their children's learning needs. This book offers a variety of resources from mentoring and community involvement to individual books and curriculum, all the while stressing the need to tailor the teaching to each individual child. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about homeschooling their children...it's given me courage. As a homeschooling rookie, I found this book to be very enouraging and truly inspirational! It was just the window I needed to see how simple and wonderful homeschooling can be for the whole family. Susan Card beautifully explains how homeschooling works in the Card family. I highly recommend it to anyone who currently homeschools or is considering it as a schooling option. My husband bought me this book and I started reading out of curiosity only - not even remotely considering homeschooling. But after only a few pages I couldn't put it down. Now I am researching this possibility, because of her sincere and straight forward approach and because I agree with their goals of what they want to achieve with their children through homeschooling. Mindchanging for me! A valuable resource for exploring the passion and spirit of homeschooling. Drawing from their own rewarding experiences, the authors give down-to-earth advice on establishing a balanced, creative and biblically based approach. You'll learn how to start the process, obtain proven curriculum resources, effectively teach children at all levels (including those with learning difficulties) and more! Susan and Michael Card answer your questions about the practical responsibilities of homeschooling, including choosing curriculum, teaching children at different levels, and planning creative and educational lessons. customer 's review (Great Guide!)
(35 Places to Go&Things to Do When Visiting...) Made all the difference in our family vacation. Saw things we otherwise would have missed. Very entertaining and informative. How can I review what I haven't read Here are 35 places, all within a one-day round trip from El Paso or Las Cruces. There are state parks with something besides cactus or trees--museums of a "World Class: status, or at least ten stars, and national monuments. These gifts from Mother Nature help you enjoy your stay in the area. For example-- The Historic lawmen's Museum in Las Cruces has items from Pat Garrett/Billy the Kid days to more recent times. -The Border Patrol Museum. -The War Birds Museum has 33 aircraft from a German Fleisher "Storch" and other World War II aircraft fame to recent additions including three MIGs. -The largest urban park in the United States is home to two of the local elephants. -Three Rivers State park has over 21,000 Pueblo Indian Petroglyphs. -The "Catwalk" of the Gila National Forest should be listed with the top ten marvels of the United States, and many, many more.
