(This game is hard)
(Strong story, not so strong gameplay)
(just another tactics)
(not as good as the PSP Valkyrie Profile Lenneth) I actually have the Japanese version with chinese translation. It has the japanese voices, chinese text. The voice acting is pretty good, although I don't understand a single word, but it does fit the scenario pretty well.
The game is just plain difficult. Many battles needs to be played many many times to reach perfection. Without perfection, you won't get the best after battle bonus items, which makes the next battle even harder.
At certain points it's very hard to let go as well. It's difficult to let the character you built up die. And to boast, there isn't much characters to being with and each character is very unique, it's not just a army of characters you don't care for.
The good thing is there's multiple endings, so there is some replayability. So far, I've only completed it once, to get one of the endings, supposedly you have to go thru the game without using the plume skill, which is really difficult beyond imagination.
If you have patience and don't mind resetting and starting again, this is a game for you. Tactics games aren't for everyone, and this one in particular needs players who's really into tactics genre games. This game is a lot of fun but it is very difficult. It took me a few hours to get the hang of the battle system and by the time I did I realized I needed to start over in order to have any chance of beating the game. I've played about 15 hours worth so far and it's still a lot of fun. One wrong decision can result in a Game Over, so every move counts. Game Completion note: Finished main story, got the "best" ending.
Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume begins well. Meaning that you go through a tutorial battle, then accidentally kill your best friend. That's not a spoiler; t happens in like the second battle. And so the story goes. You control Wyl, a young man (of course) attempting to kill the Valkyrie who took his father's soul on the field of battle. The game is heavily influenced by Norse mythology and all that jazz, and the dialog is appropriately formal. After that, the story seems to calm down a bit. Wyl is given the Covenant Plume, with which he can massively boost the abilities of his allies (read: automatic battle win), but they die at the end of the battle. I never used this except in the beginning. Maybe that's why the game was a bit hard on me. Anyhoo, the version of the story I went through (there are 3 endings) had Wyl involved in stopping a civil war and coming to peace with the Valkyrie. It was nice. A bit anticlimactic, but it works.
I think the story was the best part of the game. The battle system less so. It's your traditional Final Fantasy Tactics style isometric grid with you and your enemy taking turns. When you attack an enemy, you switch to an active battle system where each character is mapped to a button (A, B, X, Y). You then proceed to attack the enemy by pressing the button corresponding to the desired attacker. A combo meter keeps track of consecutive hits, and when it gets to 100 you get to do a special finishing move. The bosses do this at the end of their turn anyways. Cheap, but you can deal with it. It's interesting, but gets repetitive after a while.
The presentation is very nice. The music is ... interesting. There's no other work for it. There are nice orchestral pieces and then right next to them, fast and driving rock music. Not exactly fitting for the setting, but it wasn't bad. It just wasn't good. I liked the orchestral pieces. Graphics get the job done. Finishing moves are spectacular. Pre-rendered opening is sweet. I only watch the first half, because the second is not as epic, in my opinion. Nothing special though.
Should you play it? If you're a fan of turn based strategy in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics, yes you should play it. If you're not, this won't convince you otherwise. If you like a nice story, you should play this. It has a great story and lots of choices to make. If you enjoyed the olf final fantasy tactics youll love this as well. This game has ok graphics, but compared to Valkyrie Profile Lenneth on the PSP this game is not that great. Lenneth offered more choices as far as locations, teammates, and much better graphics. This Valkyrie is also limited in fighting abilities and saves. If I hadn't played Lenneth before, and this was my first Valkyrie game, I would probably not purchase another. I guess for a DS platform it is ok. The origins of a cult classic are revealed in VALKYRIE PROFILE: Covenant of the Plume, the third entry in the critically acclaimed VALKYRIE PROFILE series. Development studio tri-Ace returns to craft a gameplay experience that boasts a captivating storyline with ties to Norse mythology and a familiar yet refreshing battle system enhanced with deeper strategic elements.
Discover the origins of a cult classic of the role-playing genre inValkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume. The third installment in the critically acclaimedValkyrie Profileseries, within its single player action, which unlike earlier releases now expresses action from a human protagonist's perspective, players on the Nintendo DS experience a captivating storyline with ties to Norse mythology and a familiar yet refreshing battle system enhanced with deeper strategic elements than ever seen before. Classic stats and leveling. View larger. | Strategic group combat. View larger. | Maximum damage via new attacks. View larger. | The Story Wylfred was only a boy when his father was killed in battle and the valkyrie Lenneth claimed his soul. Although this is the ultimate glory for a warrior, it also sealed the fate of Wylfred's family. Adrift in a dangerous world, without his father Wylfred's family soon experienced the ravages of poverty and eventual tragedy. Embittered by these agonies Wylfred's journey to manhood was fueled by dreams of revenge against the valkyrie, but it is not until he agrees to a bargain with Queen Hel for the 'Destiny Plume,' which was shed from Lenneth's wings and found near the corpse of his father, that he is given a chance to exact it. But to stand against Lenneth he must, like his father before him, become a warrior worthy of the attention of the gods and their messengers. The world around Wylfred is aflame with the chaos of war, which is just the situation that he needs to accumulate the glory that the gods desire and draw the attention of the valkyrie. To the valiant she comes, and so to the battlefield he goes. Destiny awaits.Gameplay Gameplay inValkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plumerevolves around players, in the role of Wylfred, engaging in a series of strategy/role-playing quests and battles throughout the land designed to level up your character. Through in-game conversations with the 20+ available allies, players assemble a group of up to four members to engage in these battles, as well as gather items and upgrade inventory for each when and where available. Once an enemy is engaged, action is turn-based, with the members of your quest possessing limited movement indicated by colored squares. Although individual characters can feasibly carry out successful attacks, battle is designed with group combat in mind, so positioning of your team within ideal striking distance of an enemy during a single turn is important. Attacking as a group not only yields more hits as each team member strikes in turn, but if timed correctly these successive blows max out a player's attack gauge, unleashing Soul Crush, powerful special moves that quickly finish off enemies with startling force. This overwhelming power is measured in Overkill and equated as Sin. Building up as much of this as possible is important due to the deal that Wylfred makes with Queen Hel, which stipulates that each progressive battle will entail a set amount of Sin. Battles won without generating the necessary amount of Sin result in a penalty of much more difficult future battles. An additional game feature that allows for maximum damage which should be strategically planned, is the careful use of the Destiny Plume. Players can grant the plume to an ally, which instills unstoppable power in that character for a limited time and assigns special abilities to Wylfred which he retains, but at the cost of the ally's life for the remainder of the game. To be mortal is to suffer, but are the gods beyond suffering a mortal's revenge? It all depends on your choices inValkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume.Key Game Features:- Brand New Storyline Perspective- Follow Wylfred's darker story of seeking his revenge on Lenneth Valkyrie.

(Excellent for 6-10 year old girls!)
(My daughter's favorite DS game!) Hi I'm a 21 year old Autistic adult gamer...
I love the Barbie video games and yeah I'm 21 and watch all the barbie movies too. I'm a big Barbie fan!
This game is awesome it will keep you busy for hours on end plus it lot's of fun and you get to learn about horses and how to take care of them. I'm playing this game for a second time just because I like it. I learned so much about horses and how to take care of them I would recommend this game to any one of all ages not just younger kids. You can be Barbie fan no matter how old you are!
Buy this game you like it!
Do not buy Barbie 12 dancing princesses unless it's for the GBA the DS version is the same thing to a t as the GBA version so be forwarned. Save your cash and get the cheaper version go with the GBA version for Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses and yes it will work on your Original DS and DS Lite for those of you who didn't know that.
Happy Gaming! I'm always looking for games that are easy for non reader children. My daughter received her DS system when she was 4 and now that she is almost 5 years old, we have a pretty good collection of games for non readers. In Barbie Riding Camp, there are a lot of great activties to do. We still have not completed the game, but as of where we are now I can tell you somewhat about the game. The person playing the game is the character Barbie. Barbie will talk to several people throughout the game. The instructions are told to you in actual voices, so there is no reading involved (except for one part, the journal area). You start off the game in a week mode, on Monday. At the beginning of the week, you will be introduced to several people around the riding camp. You'll be instructed either by people or arrows, on where to go. You can go to the riding area, or to the barn, to the camp houses and the main manor, plus you can go on walks through the Forest and Beaches. Each day, you will unlock a mini game in the guest house. Here you will meet up with your friends Theresa and Nikki. There are several little mini games, like catch the firefly, round up the puppies and kittens, match game, trace the stars and a few more. In the guest house is where Barbie will change her clothes and also go to sleep. Each day you will be given task to complete, in order to advance to a new day (Tuesday would be next). Each task is shown to you in an example or someone on the ranch talks to you and tells you exactly what to do. Some chores that are given to Barbie (after she designs and chooses her horse), would be to care, feed, wash her horse, plus change her horseshoes and brush her horse. Also, you will take care of the barn, by nailing boards together and so on. Other task assigned to you, is to complete a riding lesson - you have to chase the stars and colect them all, follow the paths and look for the arrows. When it's time to jump a fence or post, you'll see a little popup at bottom of screen turn grey, brown and then green (green for press the pop up, then jump). You'll have to complete each assigment and course to advance. Barbie also gets to go on treks through the Forest to find things like a cottage or watch and along the way, the horse needs to eat apples and carrots. Some days Barbie and horse get to ride on the Beach. We have not completed the entire week yet, but that is pretty much the sum of the game. I'm sure your little girl will love it, it's for sure a girly, girl game My six and ten year old grandaughters really enjoy playing the Barbie Horse Adventures: Riding Camp. They both took turns playing it! We have had this game for about two weeks now and my 6-year-old daughter has played nothing else since we bought it. It was easy for her to figure out on her own, which isn't always the case with DS games. She loves to groom the horses and pick out riding outfits for Barbie. But her favorite thing is taking her horse through the jumping course and winning ribbons. There are a bunch of other activities and mini-games too. I would highly recommend this game to young girls, especially those who are horse-crazy like mine! Play as Barbie as you train, ride, and jump, while participating in challenges that will help you perfect the skills of owning and caring for your horse. Showcase your abilities in the camp's final week and take home the blue ribbon! Rerations < Barbie Horse Adventures: Riding Camp >

(Awesome game and graphics...... Fun to play)
(Great RPG must have for any gamer) Tis game is absolutely wonderful its fun and very time consuming its worth buying trust me you start off as young twins fighting a boss and exploring untill a loved one dies then the twins grow up and they are out to get revenge on their loved ones killer reuniting with friends meeting old ones and facing difficult challenges i have not played it too much so there is not much i can say but it is fun I have spent countless hours trying to solve the puzzles and quests in this game. This game is very customizable. I recommend this to any final fantasy enthusiast. You won't be disappointed. This is an impressive DS game. I loved the music and the characters. It was a fun game to play with very interesting mazes and monsters to conquer along the way. I love this game!!! The strategy guide comes in handy too... This is by far one of my favorite games. I have found that the story mode is short, but it is so fun I have played through it 5 times! (3 times on normal and twice on plus) The story is creative and refreshing and really sucks you in. The voice acting is a nice touch as well, although a little cheesy it makes for a good gaming experience. The combat is fluid and easily done although if playing in story the AI seems to be a little sub par. The multiplayer mode really makes this a great game. In multiplayer you are able to go through all the dungeons from story mode PLUS many additional quests. My personal favorite is the gladiator quests that allows you to fight against your friend adding a competitive twist to a cooperative game. Overall this is a great game and if you value a unique story with good graphics look no further. Yuri and Chelinka are fraternal twins who live happily with their father in a small village, but their happiness comes to an abrupt end when an ancient evil force arrives. Now, with his family shattered, Yuri begins to train so that he can be strong enough to fight when the evil returns. (Original, Addictive Courtroom Fun)
(Greatest game ever!!!)
(I demand a retrial....)
(Great game, but be prepared for dialogue) Not for young kids. This game was much longer than I expected. That's both a good and bad thing. Classic anime drawings and characterizations. If you don't mind lots of reading, you'll enjoy this game. I just purchased Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney about a week ago, and I just finished it minutes ago. Before you assume that the game is too short, I should probably admit that I've been playing the game almost non-stop outside of work and life obligations. It's that addicting. I couldn't put it down until the final credits were on the screen. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and found that it was a nice, fresh twist on video gaming. I know that I'm a bit late to the party and that many games like this have since been released in the US, but it is nice to see some good innovation.
Phoenix Wright is, as everyone knows, a game where you are a defense lawyer taking on murder cases which may originally seem hopeless for your clients but soon turn into complicated investigations and dramatic court room battles. Expect plot twists galore as you make your way through the game's five cases, each one progressively longer and more intricate than the last. And, unlike the majority of games on the market, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney pulls off these plot twists quite well. There were many times where I was caught off-guard by revelations during the five cases. This is one of the reasons that the game was so appealing to me. As if I was reading an interesting novel or watching an interesting film, I felt compelled to keep playing to find out what twists would occur in the cases and to find the underlying truth behind the the murders. It also helps that the game is well-written (though there are a few noticeable typos) and genuinely entertaining. The dialogue is humorous, and I found myself laughing quite often at the (intentionally) bizarre animations and lighthearted personalities of some of the characters as well as the witty, comedic dialogue that this series is famous for. Honestly, I didn't have any problem with the amount of text in this game. The player is supposed to be able to identify with Phoenix and place him/herself in the lawyer's shoes, so this amount of text was necessary for the player to uncover evidence, find discrepancies in testimonies, etc.
Below, I have listed some of the pros and cons of this game. However, the good things far outweigh the bad. I would recommend this game to nearly anyone who doesn't mind sitting through a bit of dialogue.
Pros: -Original, innovative gaming experience -Entertaining characters and dialogue -Interesting cases with often unpredictable twists -Makes good use of the DS's touch-screen capabilities -Courtroom battles are suspenseful and exciting -Addicting gameplay -Challenge factor increases in later cases
Cons -Heavily text-based (this may or may not be a con, depending on the type of game you prefer) -There are times when events seem a bit...contrived -The judge is unrealistically stupid, but I think this is supposed to add to the humor value of the game.
My conclusion? Buy it. Now. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is the best game that I have ever played in my life. Of every game for every game system that I have ever played this game wins by a landslide.
I have always been a fan of sudoku and logic puzzles. This is a great puzzle game without the fast paced game play of matching shapes and colors. I guess that is why this game is such a big hit for me. Deductive reasoning is a must in order to win cases.
When you really get involved in the cases and the characters it is not that hard to find contradictions. It is very helpful to save often just in case you give the wrong evidence and get penalized. I can play this game for hours at a time. I'm actually taking a five minute break to write this review.
This is a great game for the casual gamer. Get this game. You will not be disappointed. This is a review written by the newest and biggest fan of the Phoenix Wright franchise. Okay, so to try and distract myself from the wait for Professor Layton's second game, I bought this. I have not seen any puzzles yet in this game. I am stopping in the middle of the 2nd case and returning this game for credit. The storyline is okay. It is full of tongue in cheek characters and lines like "Detective Gumshoe". And the characters are overly dramatic- shouting and sweating often. The picture bounces up and down at what is supposed to be an apparently exciting moment to simulate nervousness. (??) The dialogue is long and drawn out. Despite that, I finished the first case (of 5) in about an hour. Not a good value, in my opinion. To submit evidence or to ask questions, you have to wait until the dialogue is over and often you have to wade throught the dialogue a 2nd time! I would have stuck with it because I play at bedtime and so it would have been a good way to fall asleep. BUT the final straw was that in each of the cases there were women wearing their shirts 4 sizes to small and in the second case, the woman would even shake her boobs during certain parts of the dialogue. Phoenix, you have been thrown out for comtempt! This game is much different than the other games I've tried in the past and was a pleasant surprise. If you're looking for an action-packed game you won't find it here, but the game does pack suspense and is hard to put down at times. Playing the game is pretty simple: you start out investigating your defendant's case by interviewing the people involved and searching various places for physical clues. After you've gained all of the necessary information to try your case, you're allowed in the courtroom to sniff out the inconsistencies and unmask the lying villain! It's like a short, interactive mystery book. Give it a world, it's amusing, and comes with some fun surprises. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney puts you in the shoes of a rookie defense lawyer trying to make his name. Take on intriguing, unusual cases and use your courtroom skills to unravel some of the most outrageous and funniest trials you've ever seen. Rerations < Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney >

(fun but some problems)
(A good Fps) First I'm not Scott, I'm his son. I got this game and it was so fun! It gives you a feel of what's really happening in the middle east. Because when people die body parts don't go flying all over or anything like that. they fall and then they disappear. then you can pick up their gun. and use it. it has good graphics and an understandable plot. it teaches you the basics then puts you to the test. it gives you hum-vees, attack copters, and missile base action as well as the basic walking (which I like best!) I like the mini games, explosives, and a special mini game in the level On Approach. Don't bother looking for cheats unless you have a game shark. or if you have a good cheat website. it does not swear at all unlike recent models. oh and when a guy gets shot it's not all gorey and stuff, it looks like gas. check out this book- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Official Strategy Guide I like the Call of Duty franchise, and realizing some of the limitations of the DS system, received this as a gift along with the Nintendo DS headset. I was pretty impressed with the graphics especially on the DS, considering the platform.
Pros: * Decent graphics * Awesome AC-130 level, allowing you to shoot the howitzer to help your buddies on the ground * Easy to get absorbed into the game
Cons: * Game is a little short, finished within about 3 days of off-and-on playing
I thought this was a solid First Person Shooter for the DS. Call of Duty Modern Warfare is a first person shooter set in the Middle East. You are a member of a squad performing Special Warfare Operations. The game is already scripted with objectives that you must accomplish before you can advance. The good thing about the game is that the objectives are short and automatically get saved from a few objectives to the next.
Game play involves navigating through the virtual world with the multidirectional keypad while your direction (up, down, left, right) is dictated by the touchscreen. Navigation through the game is guided by a map, which at times can be misleading as you lead to dead ends. You cannot switch from one squad member to another, unlike console or computer versions. In real life people would not show up in the 'radar' but it makes the game easier (i.e. you know 2 enemies are in the next room or around the corner). Given the specific 'scripted play' there is not much in terms of true adventure. This is more of an arcade shooter.
Aiming weapons is performed with the touch screen, as you fire with the Left/Right buttons on the top of the DS. Sometimes it seems to take an entire clip before you kill someone, unless you use the scope and do a head shot. Grenade use is limited to killing foes and not for destroying obstacles (such as doors) or the navigation screen on the ship; which is a strange quirk. As your energy goes down (near death), the screen turns red and you start panting (which is a nice realistic touch). Luckily, you just have to keep from getting shot and your energy recharges. I like the minipuzzles (although they are not really hard at all) that allow you to defuse bombs. The 50 caliber machine gun and helicopter scenes are really fun!
Sound is excellent, as you have the background music, sound of your squad, speech which adds some element of suspense.
The graphics for a handheld game are quite good and I notice no slowdown or significant visual distortion/pixelation.
The player can opt for a minigame (individual missions in a campaign) or the campaign mode.
Overall, this is a fun game. It is more of an arcade type shooter rather than some of the military operation-type games I have played on a PC. this game is fun but too short and takes way too many shots to kill a guy unless you get a head shot and the double tap to aim works pretty well but not all the time overall this games good but not as good as world at war for ds When I first saw this game I had no clue on how they put a fps onto the ds.One of my friends had been talking about it for the Xbox 360, so I bought it.The introduction of the game is the only mission breifing that uses 3D animation, the rest just being small pictures.Gameplay itself isn't nessessarily the most thrilling, and the equipment selection is small(No desert eagle,M4,barret,and many others.)Multiplayer is probably the best thing about it(Both multi and single card.)One more thing, earphones make all the difference. If you play through this game without them, and then play again with them, you'll hear things that you normally wouldn't without them.If you are planning on buying this or World at war, try to find them cheap. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the new action-thriller from the award-winning team at Infinity Ward, the creators of the Call of Duty® series, delivers the most intense and cinematic action experience ever. Armed with an arsenal of advanced and powerful modern day firepower, players are transported to treacherous hotspots around the globe to take on a rogue enemy group threatening the world. (Great game)
(Why this game sucks.)
(Very Fun And Addictive SRPG) This game is pretty fun. It has a bit of a learning curve because it's played almost 100% by touch, but still fun.
A lot of the levels are repeated a lot though, which leads me to believe they were either avoiding using a larger game cartridge or they were being cheap. I enjoy this game, it is long and I like that. It has great graphics. Very nice. A solid purchase if you're a fan of Final Fantasy or RPG's in general. Takes the traditional battle mechanics in a bit of a different direction, as did FFTactics, but certainly does a good job of holding your attention. Kind of a split between an RPG and Real-Time strategy game. Good blend.
Lots of fun for all ages if you're into that kind of style. Highly recommended. While overall this game is not bad, it is frustrating when the difficulty level suddenly increases to the point that you find yourself unable to progress. I finally made it to the Chaos battle and could not beat the duel bosses. I tried literally over a hundred times after leaving to level up to the point that I was repeating monster melees to gain levels. This is ultimately stupid and a waste of my time. On top of that the gameplay eventually does become monotonous (try failing at the same battle that many times and see what I mean) and the story that is told ultimately seems thrown together haphazardly. Overall a game to avoid as it's downfalls outweigh it's pluses. I am a HUGE fan of Final Fantasy, with FF XII being one of my favorites. After spending well over 100 hours into that game, needless to say I was ecstatic to hear that FF XII was coming to the DS.
STORY: The story is good, but definitely not what I expected. Aside from the characters, there really is no connection to FF XII, which isn't a bad thing. The story holds it's own, an, most of the characters from FF XII return, along with some new faces.
3.5/5
GRAPHICS: The graphics are the best I have seen on the DS, bar none. The sprites are cute, and the backgrounds/environments are well-detailed and colorful. The cut scenes, while few and far between, are AMAZING! I really wish there were more of them, though.
5/5
GAMEPLAY: The gameplay might take some time to get used too, seeing as how this isn't Square's typical RPG, but if you give it time, you won't regret it. There is no gambit system, like in FF XII, and there are no menus to attack or heal. Instead, each unit has it's own purpose, such as attack or heal, which the unit will do automatically if they're in range. The lack of any kind of multiplayer is somewhat disheartening, but not much of a big deal.
5/5
Revenant Wings is my favorite DS game to date (Trauma Center: Under The Knife is a close second), and well-worth the price, HOWEVER, seeing as how divided the opinions are on FF XII, this game will likely be the same way, so you might be better off renting it first or borrowing from a friend, to test it out.
Feel free to ask questions or leave a comment. Vaan and Penelo from the original Final Fantasy XII are back in a whole new adventure! Vaan has now officially made it to being a full-fledged air pirate, and together they travel around Ivalice searching for adventure. The world of Ivalice comes alive through the respected musical stylings of Hitoshi Sakimoto and the direction of Motomu Toriyama, the director of Final Fantasy X-2 and the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII. (I broke my DS with this game!)
(Pokemon Ranger Review)
(Fun, yet very dissapointing)
(Pokemon Ranger) As much as my son loves Pokemon, he does not play this game as much as I had anticipated. He has made no comments nor asked me to see what he is doing in the game. He just seems to be more interested in other games for his DS. I rented this game from Blockbuster, and it seemed like a good game, until I started capturing Pokemon. You have to spin the stylus to capture the Pokemon, and that spinning motion broke my DS touchscreen. It wouldn't detect the touches right after that game, and calibrating wouldn't do anything. I ended up sending it back to Nintendo to get the touchscreen replaced. If you don't want to have a broken DS, don't buy this game. I would have given it 5 stars but it was too hard and it's still hard even after I finished it. I would recommend it for ages 6 and up and they probably should know how to read in fact you should know how to read to play any pokemon game and I know because I have a little brother and he can't read and is always asking for help, it's very annoying!!! Haley S. (age 9) Being a huge fan of normal pokemon games I expecteed this one to be a lot of fun, it was a huge dissapointment. Once you get to the part where I am and you have to catch a stupid Salamence you'll never want to play again. I have put over 6 hours into trying to catch the dang thing and I have practicly broken my DS lite through anger. Just trust me If your buying this game because you like d p or and other pkmn games then dont! I want ppl 2 C this so plz say u thought it was helpful. My son wanted this game as a Christmas gift....I ordered it from Amazon and had it delivered for the same price I could have bought from anywhere else. Thanks Amazon! Pokemon Ranger is a different kind of Pokemon gaming. You're still capturing and training Pokemon, but not for competition. Instead, you're working to protect them as a Pokemon Ranger! Use the new Capture STylus to catch Pokemon, then help them survive in the wild. Rerations < Pokemon Ranger >

Square Enix(2008-09-16)
Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's review (A solid port of a classic role-playing adventure)
(Short but sweet)
(Loved it from start to finish)
(An Excellent title if you don't mind a little work)
(Solid little title with a good bit of classic fun.) Dragon Quest IV is the fourth game in the Dragon Quest RPG series. The game was originally released for the Famicom in Japan in 1990 and on the NES in America in 1992. The DS port, based on a Japanese Playstation rerelease, was released in 2008.
In the glory days of the NES, there were two major RPG series - Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest (earlier known as Dragon Warrior in America.) While there's no denying that it's the former series that has remained consistently the most popular, there is no denying that the latter is no slouch. Created by Yuji Horii with character/monster designs by Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball franchise, Chrono Trigger), the series never failed to please. Disappointingly, the series never caught on in America in the early days the way it did in Japan.
RPG fans rejoice! In recent years, Square/Enix has been righting these wrongs. Dragon Quest I-III got Game Boy Color reissues a few years back, and they are now focusing on the Zenithian Trilogy (which comprises the fourth, fifth, and sixth games in the series.) Dragon Quest IV, the first game in this trilogy, got an NES release in America, though the latter two games in it never did. This Nintendo DS port, based on a Japanese Playstation reissue, gives the game a much-needed revival.
The storyline in Dragon Quest IV is, pretty much, standard RPG fare. A group of people from various walks of life have to travel the world and unite, teaming up to defeat a common villain. What set Dragon Quest IV apart, however, is that it broke each of the main characters' stories into their own "chapters", which introduce them. They eventually unite in the final chapter, to fulfill their quest of putting an end to the world's latest threat. In Dragon Quest IV the cast consists of the typical main hero, a veteran soldier, a female princess who wants to become a knight against her father's better wishes, a fat and lazy middle-aged man who wants to open his own store, and twin sisters who unite to hunt down their father's killer. There is a myriad of supporting characters as well, including temporary party members.
Here are the pros and cons of Dragon Quest IV:
-PROS:
-Interesting, compelling characters - created by Akira Toriyama -A wide variety of magic spells and equipment -A huge world with a ton of things to do, including sidequests -An easy game to learn, but difficult to master -DS port features new graphics, minor alterations to the game (all for the better), and even an extra chapter of the game with a new final boss
-CONS:
-When you die, ONLY your main character comes back to life. You have to pay BIG BUCKS to revive the other people in your party. This is extremely annoying and frustrating, and you'll often find yourself in a slump where you have a hard time reviving anyone. This is mainly a problem early on, before you get a magic spell that takes the frustration out of everything. -Too many enemies have attacks that damage your entire party, and there aren't enough spells/items to hear your party. Additionally, some enemies (mainly bosses) can attack more than once, and they have a bad habit of often hitting your same character twice. -While this isn't necessarily a flaw, modern gamers might not be into the whole "old school" feel of the game. Despite its graphical overhaul, this is still very much an NES game. -The game goes from linear to non-linear almost instantenously in the final main chapter, which is a bit of an unexpected change and may frustrate gamers. -The game uses an individuals inventory system instead of a party inventory system. This makes it extremely frustrating when you find yourself wanting to use a particular item in battle. If you put an item in the bag before going into battle, you're out of luck. One thing I hoped they would fix for this port.
Overall though, would I recommend Dragon Quest IV? Absolutely. With great characters and a gripping storyline, there's not a whole lot not to like about this game. It's very much an old-school title, and fans of retro RPGs will love it. The new graphics and added chapter are the icing on the cake.
Long story short? If you're a Dragon Quest fan, or fan of RPGs in general, pick this one up. I doubt you'll be disappointed. Dragon Quest 4 was arguably the best NES Dragon Quest game released. Square Enix was kind enough to grace us with a remake and promised future remakes of the next two installments for the DS. Dragon Quest has held a very large fan base for decades now. In Japan that fanbase is even larger than in America. You could say Dragon Quest is the definitive JRPG, in that many games afterwards have copied elements of DQ gameplay. Dragon Quest has always remained simple and fun and I truly believe it is one of the reasons why the series has done so well.
DQ4 is a very well done remake. It manages to keep the old feel and spirit of DQ4 for the NES and make it approachable for today's generation. There will always be some haters who hate the grinding and simplistic gameplay, but hey, you can't please everyone. If you have played DQ games before and enjoyed them then you can know in confidence that you will enjoy this one. In comparison to DQ7 and 8 this one falls a little short. The story isn't as involving. There are no skills, only spells. There is no job system as in DQ 7 and 3 , and the game just doesnt look as good as the most recent DQ games. Does that really matter? NO. It does not. Simply put, this a very well put together DQ game. It made several improvements on the releases before it. It was the arguably the MOST innovative RPG released when it was orginially released for the NES. The Chapter system was almost unheard of, but praised. It was a great idea that still works to this very day. If anything you can look at this game as a piece of history. Isn't it great to be able to enjoy this piece of history through a buffed up remake? I think so. It was about time that this game was finally brought over to our shores. For some many people that didn't get to play it previously. The game is done very well with a classic, yet updated feel to the game as well. I really enjoyed being able to play the game from the beginning not as the hero. but as the people that were along for the ride as well. It was cool to see what they went through to come to that point of aiding the hero and putting their life on the line.
I also enjoyed later on in the game being able to create/populate your own town with different characters. That were wandering around aimlessly in different parts of the world..some you encounter on your way through the game. While others you have to get to via talking up or doing other things to get them interested in your bustling town.
The story was done well even though we've heard the "one" hero that can save the world from annihilation angle. It is handled very well here and it doesn't feel like a rehash at all. As there are so many other things to do in the game that will keep you occupied and interested throughout. Your the hero and monsters are on the rise in your land, the culprit a crazed and out there villain by the name of Psaro is your adversary.
But along the way through many trials and tribulations. You grow stronger on your quest to defeat him and his cohorts. Yes, the slimes are in this one. What would DQ be without them.
Great game, very solid story and engaging characters make Dragon Quest IV something that should be added to anyone's gaming list. I just completed the regular 5 chapters of DQIV and thoroughly enjoyed it. According to my DS I logged 58 hours and 30 minutes into this game. I definitely consider it worth the money!
I thought the graphics, sound, and story were excellent. I love the turn based battle system and did not find the menu hard to navigate. I am a relative "latcomer" to the RPG genre. I don't play consoles (my kids do---but I prefer the DS) so I never played a FF or DQ or other popular RPG. I got very attached to some characters (for some reason I was VERY attached to the merchant guy Torneko). I loved the ending. I have not yet played the 6th chapter so I can't speak to it but i generally find that these "extra" chapters are not something I usually enjoy. I am satisfied and happy to have beaten the game.
I thougtht this game had an excellent save system. Your characters (some of them) can learn spells like Evac and Zoom. Evac can be used in most dungeons to get you out of there right away and zoom takes you to any place you visited before. As a newcomer to the RPG genre I did not have any problems completing this Quest. I did have to pay attention to what I was doing and I did use a guide to assist me--but I found that, as good as the guide was, I liked choosing my own team and equipping them the way I wanted to in the boss battles so most of the time what I had was very different than what the guide had. Mostly the guide was useful for the dungeon's so I didn't get lost.
I found the learning curve acceptable. I was able to beat all bosses on the first try BUT I spent a lot of time leveling up. I prefer to have fun using strategy in the battles and not have to keep reviving fallen team members. I have to admit that I spent probably 6-7 hours before the final sets of boss battles going after those liquid metal slimes and king slimes----I leveled my hero up to 38 before I knew it so the final battles were not bad. My team was all at level 38 or above for the final battle.
If you've read my past reviews you know I write from a 40 something mom's perspective. I really loved The World Ends with You (hence my interest in RPG) and I would say this one rates up there as well---it does not have as original a story and there weren't any surprises for me along the way so it was predictable but the fact you first play each chapter as someone new is very cool and keeps it from getting stale. I will say I had a much harder time leveling up Maya and Meena than anyone else in thier chapter. Don't know why (magic users maybe?)
I can highly recommend this title. I think anyone from about age 10 or up would enjoy it as long as they understand that it is easier if you level up..I like that repetition so relish these types of games. While I do not think anyone needs to level up as much as I did (you can get through the game without it) this does make the game more forgiving and lets you have a couple of lapses in judgement (I used Thwack on a boss...what was I thinking!). If you like turn based RPG I think this one deserves to be picked up! Honestly folks. It's Dragon Warrior, it's 4 the last of the titles that came out in the US. It's fun with the chapters style and it plays fast. For an old school RPG, especially if you like this kinda stuff, it's golden. A prestigious army captain, an adventurous princess seeking to test her skills beyond palace walls, a humble merchant aspiring to open his own shop, and two sisters who wish to avenge their father’s death… These seemingly unrelated individuals will soon cross paths when fate brings them together to journey alongside you, the hero.
