And, depending on your particular take, you might not findLennon Legendquite hitting the mark. However, since it does contain the brilliantly scathing "Working Class Hero," doesn't ignore the woefully underratedRock 'n' Rollalbum, and catches the hopeful renewal that came toward the end of his foreshortened life, it's probably about as close as anyone's going to come. In 2001, Blake made his debut with the single 'Austin.' Released as the lead-off single from his self-titled debut album, 'Austin' went on to peak at #60 at Country radio in Canada. Shelton followed his debut with 2003's 'The Dreamer' (his first for Warner Bros. proper) and 2004's 'Blake Shelton's Barn&Grill,' where his first single 'Some Beach' reached #1 on the Country charts, and the following single 'Nobody But Me' peaked at #7. Shelton followed his third album with, 'Pure BS,' and a fifth album, 'Startin' Fires,' whose debut single 'She Wouldn't Be Gone' peaked at #7 at Country radio. 'Hillbilly Bone,' from Shelton's sixth studio album, and his first SIX PAK of the same name was the fastest rising single of his career and peaked in the Top 10 at Country radio.

Among them are a half-dozen of the greatest singles the two conjured for Dionne Warwick in the '60s; from the sorrowful "Anyone Who Had a Heart" to the bittersweet "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" and the savvy "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," they're among the best examples of postwar pop. Though one of rock's most influential figures, David Bowie's accomplishments are pocked by some distinct ironies. His willful efforts at being a musical and visual chameleon spurred triumphs in genres as diverse as folk, glam, new wave, and electronica. Given the dizzying range and success of his '70s incarnations--from Ziggy to the Thin White Duke to the gaunt, goth-cypher ofLowandHeroes--he seemed the artist most well-equipped to weather the changing tides of taste and trend, yet saw his career essentially shrink to cult status after scoring his biggest triumphs when he reshaped the soulless, dance-oriented club music of the early '80s into his own image. This 20-track compilation does little to address the Chinese puzzle that has been Bowie's post-'85 career, but it does deliver an artistically dizzying slate of hits as it skips from one early peak to the next, from evocative cabaret ("Space Oddity," "Changes") through muscular glam-rock ("Suffragette City," "The Jean Genie") to R&B ("Young Americans," "Fame") and post-punk flirtations ("Ashes to Ashes," "Fashion") to the dance-club hits ("Let's Dance," "China Girl," "Modern Love") and '80s one-off duets ("Under Pressure" with Queen, "Dancing in the Streets" with Mick Jagger) that essentially marked the end of his superstar reign. Whole eras and at least one classic '70s album (Low) go completely unaddressed, but all of Bowie's signature hits are here, as well asEarthling's powerful, underappreciated "I'm Afraid of Americans."--Jerry McCulley

Fusing folk, garage rock, pop sensibilities, and insightful lyrics delivered with Michael Stipe's inimitable lead vocals, these alt-rock forefathers built a massive indie following, and in 1988 unleashed their major-label debut, Warner Bros.' Green. This roots rock tour de force was followed in '91 by the Grammy-winning #1 blockbuster Out of Time, which led to an ongoing stream of masterpieces. These two classics, along with five more albums from R.E.M.'s extraordinary catalog-plus their retrospective Best Of-now each feature a Bonus DVD with Surround Sound audio and video extras.
How do you condense 15 years of music down to 76 minutes? In the case of this survey of the second phase of R.E.M.'s career, the answer is: Exceptionally well.
