And it's always been that way for this group that started out having to prove its worth at open mics when singer Genevieve Schatz and guitarist Marc Walloch were still teenagers. Once they plugged in, the ideas continued to flow, and the fanbase started to grow along with the band's sound. It's difficult to think of a harder-working group of musicians than the skilled players who make up Company of Thieves. These guys and gal are road warriors, and there s a good chance that they've already played your town a few times. They've toured with Annuals, OK Go, and The Hold Steady, played festivals like Lollapalooza and Mountain Jam, appeared on Last Call With Carson Daly, and Schatz and Walloch were given props by the veteran players when they performed on Live From Daryl's House. And it s no surprise that their songs have struck a chord with music fans both young and old: The timeless results feature an invigorating mix of rock and pop delivered with panache and soul, propelled by Schatz's powerful pipes and Walloch's inventive, expansive guitar work. They're masters of tension and release, they know when to slow things down and when to blow it all up, and there's a good chance that they're about to become your new favorite band. The last the world heard from Trust Company was in 2005, when after release of their second album, True Parallels, they announced that they d be going on hiatus. As lead vocalist and guitarist Kevin Palmer remembers, After True Parallels, we were in a bad spot. No one was happy. We had been rushed into the studio to meet a record company deadline and all those external pressures all the outside opinions about how our music should sound had it stop being fun, which is why we got into it in the first place. Drummer Jason Singleton adds, We never said we re breaking up. It just stopped being exciting. We had to get away from the big machine for a while. The band had made a lot of fans since its formation in 1997 and especially after their breakout success in 2002, with their gold selling debut, The Lonely Position Of Neutral and the hit single Downfall. Extensive airplay on MTV for Downfall and continuous touring with such bands as KoRn, Papa Roach and Disturbed earned the band an especially rabid following, one that stuck around through the ensuing years that the band was apart. The evidence of all the good feeling created by their reunion is in their new album, Dreaming In Black And White. But it's also a happy reminder that the man spent the last months of his life at work doing what he loved. The overall effect of these dozen duets is autumnal and smooth. Brother Ray is on point and cruising here. Fine moments abound--you can hear his delight even in the rather stiff company of Diana Krall and Natalie Cole. His voice sounds a bit frayed by ill health at times, but it also allows for great performances like the slyness behind the ache in his version of the old soul hit "Hey Girl" with Michael McDonald and a grand "Crazy Love" with Van Morrison. Minus the turntables and digital tricks, but laden with revealing lyrics, a wide guitar sound, and thumping rock rhythms, Trust Company charge fearlessly through the gaping hole in the pop landscape left by more famous contemporaries. Thanks to Linkin producer Don Gilmore, their major-label debut is smoother than those of Papa Roach and Puddle of Mudd. To their detriment, they're sometimes lulled by the slickness of their polished hooks.
