(The perfect match)
(Superb)
(Outstanding!) Eufish is an excellent album. Mark Fisher plays the euphonium superb and it sounds wonderful. Only one thing I don't like... the movements should've been recorded separately for each track in the continuo in F minor instead of cutting it into tracks. I liked some movements better than others :D. Aside from that, very nice. This an absolute superb recording. Mark Fisher and Mark Lawson are magnificient. Every track renders a gift for the ears. Smooth, uplifting, and thought provoking. This is worth getting one for yourself and one for every friend you believe has good taste. Enjoy! These two childhood friends from State Street in Mason City, IA grew up across the street from each other. Now twenty five years later they are the perfect match in the beautiful album. The CD solution for a soothing drive home. This is a superbly done CD. Pianist and euphonium player work great together. Listen to the nuances in phrasing in the Bach. Pianist is every bit as superb as the euphonium soloist. Bravo!!! Sonata for flute&keyboard in E flat major, second movement, (Siciliano)was my favorite. I was moved to tears. #26 on this CD from the Carnival of Venis was played and recorded so well that I had to move my chair back a bit. I mean this in the kindest way,I'm sure I could feel the spit fly! (I have an new sterio) That counter melody thing is astonishing! You must hear it. Rerations < Eufish >

(Baroque smoothie) My listening is schizophrenic. One side of me takes in overall musicological detail regarding Baroque compositions, skill and quality of performance, and the insight performers bring to their published recording. This side of me rates Parnassi Musici's recording five stars.
The boom in Baroque music has created many younger groups with fascinating European groups with mixed nationalities - and often American performers. Among this record's performers Matthias Fischer, violin; Stephan Schrader, violoncello; and Martin Lutz, harpsichord and organ, are German. Sergio Azzolini was born and got his early training in Bolzano a northern Italian city with strong influences from its former history as a part of Austria. His training to become one of the world's master baroque bassonists included studies in Hannover, and a professorship in Stuttgart,Germany. He's now associated with the Basel Music Academy in Switzerland. All the instrumentalists perform with effortless technique, and ensemble nuance.
Teaming up with her "European Union" colleagues, is Margaret MacDuffie, violin. Among her training influences was study in Warsaw, Poland under a Fulbright scholarship, and baroque violin studies with Daniel Stepner (now at Brandeis and Harvard Universities). She is now a member of the Southwest German Radio Orchestra of Freiburg, Germany.
One unusual feature of this recording is its knowledgeable and insightful liner notes on Georg Philipp Telemann and his music - devoid of usual cliches about Telemann's huge productivity, etc. This is also associated with the group's intensive library research and performance of rare works.
Examples include: "What for us seems to be so natural and self evident in his trio compositions - the balance of form, the casual conversational tone of the instruments, the ingenious singing design never overladen with counterpoint, and the sparkling allusions to stylistic models from Corelli to Polish inn (folk) music - all this had to be invented." and "..he packed into his trios everything that Germany's rich musical had to offer in sources of inspiration".
The notes also include a dated list of Telemann trios showing the evolution of this form, which among other things led to Telemann's pioneering chamber music in quartets for various instruments.
Now, having said these things, I have to admit the more emotional side of my schizophrenic listening. This is a "regressive" tendency to most enjoy Telemann played with modern instruments and tastefully adapted vibrato and adventuresome dynamics - something one normally has to go back to recordings before the 1980s recordings to find (but please let me know if I'm missing newer recordings). Part of the reason is that I think that Telemann was a (pre)romantic in temperament. He relished exploring new sonorities achieved with unusual instrumental combinations (like the Concerto for Flute and Recorder, in E-minor - where he uniquely exploits the timbres of each solo instrument and their combinations). His music can also obviously - to my mind - call for crescendi, sudden changes in rhythm, loudness or softness, and dramatic color effects. The wild Polish folk fiddlers and bagpipers incorporated in the finale of the above Concerto is a case in point.
However, I greatly enjoyed the Parnassi group's musicality, spirit, and choice of repertory, and am pleased to spend this time with fellow baroque music lovers in sharing a few details about their fine work.
Beautifully played and very realistically recorded, engaging music from the master of melodic invention. The Opening movement from the Quartet is one of the most seductive Baroque sound-pictures I've ever heard, with beautiful counterpoint between organ and violins. A winner. I've heard three different musicians perform these pieces, and played them myself, and it is interesting to compare the soloists and the approaches taken to the balancing of the string consort with the recorder (not counting me, of course).
The musicians in question are Michala Petri (now hard to find), Franz Bruggen (just about impossible to find), and here Daniel Rothert. Bruggen is more of a 'force' at the recorder than the other two, and most of his recordings tend to be more emotional rather than technically brilliant. Since Bruggen was almost single-handedly responsible for the resurgence of the recorder as an instrument I tend to forgive most of his sins. And, after all, he really was a fine player.
Petri really owns this music. She has the most polished tone and technique of any recorder player I've heard, and an exquisite sense of phrasing. I have only two issues with her. The first is that she tends to rush, which sometimes blurs an arpeggio or detailed passage. The second is that her tone is very restrained, and she will sometimes blend into the accompaniment just when you want to hear the details of her work.
Rothert, on this recording, is the great compromise. The recorder chosen for these pieces has a darker tone than Petri's, but has a bit less color than Bruggen's preferred instruments. Rothert also forces his notes more than Petri, which sometimes brings a high not into unexpected prominence. This is particularily noticable in the A minor Suite, which has one or two great leaps of recorder faith. Rothert does the best job of balancing with the strings, never getting lost in the shuffle. He is an admirable technician, one that may not take the risks that Petri does but who impresses nonetheless.
If you are looking for an extremely cost friendly way to add these pices to your collection, you will be greatly pleased with this purchase. Rerations < Suite&Concertos for Recorder >

One result of this innovation was to encourage composers throughout Europe to explore the expressive and technical solo possibilities of instruments like the bassoon, traditionally relegated to non-solo roles. More than a century later, late Baroque masters Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Philipp Telemann and Jan Dismas Zelenka, all born within a three-year span, composed some of the finest and most challenging music ever written for the bassoon. This recording features several works from this era.For this recording a bassoon, rather than the cello, was used as the bass continuo instrument in combination with the harpsichord, except in the Zelenka Trio, where the composer specified violone as one of the instruments of choice. Accordingly, the modern double bass was employed here. Introduced to the bassoon while in public school in his hometown of Massapequa, New York, Frank Morelli studied with Stephen Maxym at the Manhattan and Juilliard Schools of Music, and was the first bassoonist to be awarded a doctorate by the Juilliard School. With over 140 recordings for major labels to his credit, his recording of the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with Orpheus on the DG label won international critical acclaim. The Orpheus CD "Shadow Dances," which features Morelli, won a 2001 Grammy. He has made eight appearances as a soloist in Carnegie Hall and has appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center on numerous occasions, including at the Whitehouse for the final state dinner of the Clinton presidency. A member of the renowned quintet, Windscape, ensemble-in-residence at the Manhattan School of Music, he also serves on the faculties of the Juilliard, Yale and SUNY Stony Brook. He is editor of the landmark excerpt book, "Stravinsky: Difficult Passages for! Bassoon", published by Boosey&Hawkes. Frank Morelli is principal bassoonist of the New York City Opera Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the American Composers Orchestra. Rerations < Baroque Fireworks >

(A Musical Treat You Will Treasure Forever!)
(More than the sum of the parts.)
(A Great First CD)
(The sublime collection) The Recorder, a woodwind instrument, is usually associated with young school children. It is relatively easy to play (at least on a casual level) and with just a little bit of practice, one can make relatively pleasant sounds. It's popularity reached its peak in medieval times until more sophisticated orchestral woodwinds displaced its use from the 18th century onward. Its wholesome sweet natural sound evokes pastoral imagery and the simplicity of earlier times. Yet, in the hands of a virtuoso, it is an instrument of great complexity, versatility and pristine beauty.
Michala Petri hails from Denmark and is one of the most highly regarded masters of the Recorder. She has toured extensively, displaying her talent before world audiences. THE ULTIMATE RECORDER COLLECTION is a two-disc collection of inspired performances of works by classical and contemporary composers. In her gifted hands, the recorder soars with unique harmonics, transporting the listener to a new appreciation of often heard works. The technical aspects of the 2 CD set are excellent, yet the performances are individually and collectively warm and inviting. There are 45 selections in the collection, all of which are performed exquisitely. Ms. Petri is a gifted performer, an artist who elevates a humble instrument to lofty heights.
As a relatively new recorder player, I wanted to listen to an experienced professional, to hear the techniques and phrasings an experienced recorder player can utilize.Even after reading the other rave reviews, I was not prepared for the virtuosity I was to experience.Michala Petri did for my musicality now, what Andres Segovia did many years ago when I learned to play classical guitar.I was inspired, humbled, and totally blown away by her shear talent! Her ability to create bird-chirping sounds with a sopranino recorder on the baroque pieces is uncanny.I think my favorite out of all the incredible tracks is her rendition of Bach's Air For G-String.The sound of her playing with her husband, Lars Hannible,as he plays the classical guitar,is a heavenly experience. Not only does this lady obviously own some of the best recorders ever made, she knows how to get the best tones out of them as well.I can recommend this two cd set as one of the best musical collections ever sold. I bought this as wallpaper music - and got a very pleasant surprise!Several of the pieces stopped me in my tracks, made me sit down and forced me to listen. Michala Petri demonstrates a masterly control of her instrument and a high level of musicianship in a wide ranging selection of material - from reconstituted Bach to specially composed 20th Century pieces. Outstanding for me was the Sammartini Concerto: Ms Petri shows a lightness of touch combined with serious enthusiasm and an obvious delight that literally stopped me from working and made me listen. The support given by the Moscow Virtuosi also deserves mention. Koppel's pieces are fun, as are the arrangements from Grieg and Satie. Overall, although this could be taken as a glorified sampler... it is much more - there are complete works played intelligently and lighter, throw away pieces you'll want to chase after and listen to again. After falling in love with the recorder, I started searching for CDs and this was the first I bought. It quickly became a favorite CD. I like the fact that it ranges over a wide period--Baroque to Modern, and showcases the instrument in different settings. The liner notes are quite comprehensive as well. In a word--enchanting. I must confess up front to being a Michala Petri fanatic. I also play the recorder, although after listening to this album, I feel like throwing my instruments into the nearest dumpster.Michala Petri is a national hero in Denmark, and a recognized name among classical music fans in Europe, Asia, and Canada. If you listen to this album, you will ask yourself how the music business in the USA can frantically promote "The Three Tenors" while mostly ignoring the genius of this amazing young woman. This is not your kid's recorder. Ms Petri's complete technical and musical mastery of her instrument transforms the recorder into the equal of other familiar solo instruments, but with its own peculiar sound, penetrating but sweet, that sets it apart. This album is made up mostly of tracks from her many earlier recordings. Some are transcriptions of well-loved piano miniatures (the Grieg numbers are perhaps more charming here than on the piano, if that is possible); of baroque works for flute, recorder, or strings; of modern recorder music written for Ms Petri by contemporary masters. Some are accompanied by small orchestra and others by Ms Petri's husband, the excellent guitarist and lutist Lars Hannibal. The combination of recorder and guitar is an intimate match made in heaven, and I recommend also this duo's complete album, 'Air'. Rerations < The Ultimate Recorder Collection >
